He sucked today badly and I don't know yall but I think we could have a problem next year.

What happens if Springs leaves and Rogers starts fully?.He wasn't ready last year or for and he looks bad here so what would be the plain cause we still need a DE.

IMO this is how we might do it.3 plains of possibility.

1) Next year draft a 1st round CB instead of a DE?.

2)Draft a DE still in the first and draft A second round pick CB?.

3)Hope Terrell Suggs who would turn 26 in OCTOBER become a free agent next year and pick him up while the skins draft an CB.

I mean what would happen cause even with a pass rush the secondary would probably turn weak again cause we need to think about that now.

Not only that but if we do good than it would be around the 20's in the round and we need to think now.

IMO if where smart and where not in the 1st round top 15th pick than drafting a CB would be smart cause Macklin is here for one year and Springs would leave. So drafting another CB we know would be good and a DE in the second round cause there is alot of DE out there.

You don't think it's a tad early to be talking about what we're going to do in the draft next year? Rogers didn't have a "bad" day, but you can't start replacing the starting CB because of how he did in the season opener, come on!!! Using that logic, Campbell didn't exactly light it up either, should we be thinking about drafting a QB in the upcoming draft?

The moral of the story is: relax, and see how things play out. I don't think there's ANYONE thinking about the draft yet, when there's 15 more games to go. Let's see how the Rogers/Smoot/Springs triumverate mesh for the next few weeks before we start replacing them.
Sit back and watch the Redskins.

Campbell had as bad a day as Carlos. I've got confidence that both will step it up this season.

I agree it's too early to be thinking about next year's draft, but this isn't just one bad game for Rogers. He was terrible last season and his poor play continued today. He is still giving a huge cushion on 3rd and 5 and Miami abused him today, especially in the 4th quarter. When it mattered most in this game, other guys that were having a bad game (Campbell, Cooley, etc.) stepped up but Carlos continued to get beat. On Miami's drive in the 4th quarter where they tied the game almost every play was a completion on Rogers, in addition that horrendous missed tackle on the swing pass. This guy was a top 10 pick and he is in his 3rd full season so there is no excuse for this type of play.

We should draft a QB in the 1st round
We got Calos and Campbell together in the 1st round the same year , so we'll have to trade some picks to get back in the 1st round to get another corner.
We can't use the 2nd round pick because we want to get a good DL there.
With the fourth and fifth picks gone, I'm sure we'll have plenty of takers for our 3rd and 6th.
We can't use any of the 2009 picks because Taylor and Cooley may have a bad game opening day 2008 and we must be prepared.

We all know 1st round QB's are always worth the risk. With Jansen injured, maybe we should call Ryan Leaf. Or possibly bail Rae Carruth out of prison. What other ridiculous ideas can we come up with? Oh, I know. Let's trade away all of our draft picks for the next 5 years for another bunch of past-their-prime has-beens. Or we could trade Portis to the Gnats for Eli Manning. Don't stop me now, I'm on a roll. (Please shoot me if any of this ever becomes a reality)

yeah i think its too early to be talking about people playing poorly and replacing them. and the defense as a unit performed very well. minus the late 2nd quarter drive.

Wow. The early posts in this thread have taught me something. First off, it IS too early to be talking about replacing Rogers in the draft. For that matter, we may as well dump Smoot too b/c of that dropped pick that would have kept us out of overtime. But what I learned from reading the first few posts in this thread, is that not only do they talk in it, but drunk people type in slurred speech.

I wish I could have seen the game, but they rarely show them down here. How did Landry do?

Carlos had a solid game. Smoot was the one who got abused. Cameron called pass plays all day that went right at Smoot. Chamberlain caught most of his balls on Fred. Get a tape of the game and watch it for yourself. The bigger question is why did Smoot start over Springs? And where did Smoots game go? Not picking on the easy target.

I hope so. I think Rogers should be more physical and bump the recievers more this is where his strengths are.

I don't agree.... Smoot got beat a lot but he also made a few plays, and was not giving his man the cushion that carlos "grampa" Rogers was giving. IMO, he was the one that gave up the TD at the end of the half... Smoot barely played last season, and he still showed flashes... Rogers played all last season and I'm still waiting for a flash of talent that made him a 1st round pick... He should convert to a safety the way he plays right now...

I know it's easy to pick on Rogers, but be fair. Smoot got picked on a hell of a lot also. Chambers got yards on both of them.

It was definitely a lot easier to see them go after Rogers on that one drive where he gave up a long pass & then the PI right after. As for the TD, that was a pretty damn good throw to the TE, Rogers (for once) actually had good coverage.

Do I think that he's lived up to #9 pick in the NFL draft? No. And I still wish we had gotten Merriman or Ware with that pick....

I dunno guys. While true that they both got abused at times during the game, I think Smoot had a more solid outting than Rogers.

They both got beat physically at times but IMO Rogers was getting beat mentally too. You can't help but to worry about the lack of confidence that he displays at times.

Are you kidding me?! Maybe I was watching a different game than you, but Smoot was the one I saw giving receivers 10-12yd. cushions all through the first half... I think they both could have been sharper, but I completely disagree with the whole "...[Smoot] was not giving his man the cushion..."

I could be a little off because I was at the game, and didn't get the benefit of watching televised replays with commentary, but from what I saw, I thought both guys did ok, both guys could have done better, and both guys will likely get better as the season continues.

maybe you were right.. smoot may have been giving cushion too, but that almost intercepted pass made a statement saying I can close that cushion out... I know fast freddy can come up with that INT 2 out of 3... I just can't say the same out of Rogers... Am I picking on him, maybe, it just kills me that they needed to bring freddy to put a fire under his arse and play, realize his destiny and lock them recievers down.

I guessing that if a corner breaks on the ball and it gets through his hands then hits him in the chest he'll drop it 2 out of three times

Maybe they brought him back to add depth, or that they never wanted to let him go and when his asking price went down they brought him back. Maybe Carlos had nothing to do with his return

Gnome's 100% correct.

It was Smoot that was being systematically targeted all day, not Rogers. It didn't matter where Smoot lined up, that's the side they wanted to throw to. He was giving up a huge cushion.

Rogers didn't have a great game, but Smoot got abused (and it would have been worse if Taylor hadn't shaded toward his side of the field to help).

Maybe we should put a little bit on the scheming. GW seems to put a lot of responsibility on our corners. Smoot and Rogers individually had more solo tackles than Landry and Sean combined. This considering that they dumped the ball off to the RB in the middle of the field very often. We just put so much emphasis on these guys, and I do believe it is by design. I think GW tries to free up the safeties to either cause havoc or stop the big plays. He doesn't use them as much as the rest of the league to help out on regular coverage.

Either we accept that this is a weakness in on our defense that we try to overcome with blitzing and D-line penetration, or we try to get Champ Bailey back.

Additionally, we didn't seem to blitz too often, and when we did, with only one guy. Do you think this conservative approach is due to some influence over GW from Gibbs?

Excellent by any standards!

I do not feel pass coverage was great. I also noticed the cushions. But as opposed to most of you, I blame the DL and lack of blitz calls for lack of pressure on Trent Green. Any NFL QB will pick you apart if they have enough time to do so.

Have to disagree. Smoot had a rough start to the game but I think that he stepped up in the second half. He was probably just nervous in the first half. To me he seemed to settle down as the game went along and even though he didn't get that pick, he still made a great play on the ball (on 3rd down I believe) that helped us win the game. And while both were giving cushion, Smoot has the speed to close on the ball (as seen on the near int) and Rogers doesn't. Smoot also didn't give up and td's, while Carlos got beat by a second string tight end. And late in the game it was Rogers that the Dolphins targeted and not Smoot. That 4th quarter Dolphins drive where they tied the game was probably one of the worst defensive effort by a cb that I've ever seen. First Rogers totally missed a tackle on a swing pass, then he got beat for a first down on 3rd and 5 but giving his usual 10 yard cushion, and then got flagged for pass interference on a deep ball. He couldn't have been worse on that drive.
