Well that is the life in the NFL. As long as the number isn't retired, they can re-assign the number to anyone they want. Sometime I do not agree with it but want can you do.

yeah, but the guy was one of the 'core' guys that helped build teh franchise into a superbowl winner. at least wait a few years before you give away the number.
