Skins trade 4th rounder for...(not official)

Post by Chris Luva Luva »

A league source tells us that the Jets have sent guard Pete Kendall to the Washington Redskins. It is believed that Washington sent a fourth-round pick to the Jets in exchange.

Hmmm....

Dude is 34 years old I believe. I don't know how I feel.

yeah its not a rumor it has happened....and i feel great...maybe we can move wade back to his true position of tackle to help out jansen who has struggled here and there and start kendall, a proven starter, at guard and let pucillo develop under him

The Redskins have reportedly acquired G Pete Kendall from the Jets in exchange for a fourth-round pick.

Washington may be giving up too much for the 34-year-old, but the Redskins can undoubtedly use him. Their experiment with Todd Wade and Mike Pucillo at left guard has not been successful. Kendall's addition opposite Randy Thomas gives the 'Skins possibly the best guard tandem in the NFC East.

I agree, Chris, not sure how I feel about this one. But it can't hurt, we need help there.

Well, at least it's only a 4th rounder, and supposedly he's still a quality player, but several things about it don't sit well with me.

1) 34!!
2) More trading of draft picks.
3) He's had 1 complete 16-game season in the the last 6 years! Granted, he's usually good for at least 12 games or so, but still, I can't help but wonder how many games we'll get out of him.
4) Isn't he the guy who just signed a big contract extension last year and is already complaining about it one year later? Don't know if I like that attitude.

Still, I think we're going to have to just wait and see how this plays out. If he shores up the line for the next year or two, doesn't miss too many games, and doesn't cost us a ton of cap space, then we'll have gotten about a 4th rounder's value out of the deal. Obviously, the near-loss of JC last Sat. scared the team (as well as all of us fans). Guess the other options at G (converting Wade, Pucillo, etc.) weren't working out.

Hmmm. . .bye bye draft pick. I hope that we'll consider this one worth it. Money isn't an issue here, but I am concerned about the lost draft pick, and the 'chemistry' of the OL.

Still, with reports of Wade's difficult transition, and the injuries that have beset the left side of our line, I can see the rationale for this move.

a lost fourth rounder who may or may not pan out for a solid starter at guard who will hopefully protect our most important assett campbell is well worth it for me...if we dont field a line on the field who can protect our franchise qb, draft picks really wont matter...

Pucillo's 28 and entering his 6th season. I think he's "developed" as much as he's ever going to, and at this point he's just a decent depth guy.

I understand these concerns and share some of them. But, from a previous report on ESPN.com:

Kendall was praised throughout last season by coach Eric Mangini for mentoring rookie linemen D'Brickashaw Ferguson and Nick Mangold. Kendall also adds versatility on the line and can play a number of positions. He's also well-liked by his teammates as well as the media, in particular for his candidness.

It could be that he signed the deal after a verbal promise by the Jets that he could restructure the next year to make more money. I don't know. But his reputation I think should make us give him the benefit of the doubt as to how he would fit in. With the Jets, he'd be making the near-vet-minimum for his experience in the league, and I think he just wanted a better payday for what might be his last NFL season.

Guess the other options at G (converting Wade, Pucillo, etc.) weren't working out.

I think that's the bottom line. I don't like the 'patchwork' feel to our personnel this year.

They should have tried trading Marshall for him. Of Marshall and a 7th rounder for him.

4th is too high.

haha yeah i agree but assuming that we dont draft a lineman again (which is how we got in this situation) and that kendall retires here in 4 years or so pucillo can be the guy to step up....lets hope we look to the future more than that but who knows

Well, I'd only call the line 'patchwork' - the rest of the team seems to be coming together nicely. Now granted, the offense is built around the line, and that's one unit you don't want to be 'patchwork' (ask the Texans or the Cardinals).

Ultimately, I think the pros and cons of this deal about even out at this point, and we're just going to have to wait it out to see how it goes. If we end up paying a lot to this guy and he gets dinged up and misses much play time, it's going to look the Duckett deal all over again - a panic move which wasn't well thought-out. On the other hand, if he's healthy and shores up what is a crucial spot on our team, protecting our young QB for the next year or two, then no one is going to complain.

As most have stated... I am too skeptical of this trade for obvious reasons (age, giving up picks)...
BUT the main benefactor of this maybe keeping Campbell upright and safe!!!

If I am not mistaken our 4th is already gone because of the TJ Duckett trade.

I dunno...

He's freaking 34 years old. Unless he's of the D. Green mold, this cat is on his last football life.

This seems like another knee jerk reaction... Really, what kind of cohesion will be built? He can't expect another 4 years of play out him, can we?

A 4th rounder? Crud... I don't like giving up picks. A 4th round pick is a good pick for depth and we've been picking seemingly good players recently.

If it keeps Campbells' ligaments in once piece, then it is a good trade.

A 4th round pick is still kinda high for a guy who made no secret of his displeasure with his contract. You would think that the Jets had little leverage.

Since he's already 34, I don't see getting 4 more years out of Kendall. I'd be happy with 2, and everything after that is just icing on the cake. The line as a whole is aging, and I expect to see that addressed via the draft and/or free agency sometime in the next two years.

I am also concerned about losing a draft pick but geez people  - we really need to address protecting our QB and IMO we cannot afford to hope that we can get by with what we have. Campbell has to be protected at all costs and I think Bugel must have asked for some help at guard and suggested getting someone that can get the job done now - we absolutely cannot wait to hope that the younger players can effectively protect Campbell - the current situation must have dictated this move - these guys have been trying not to give away a pick (not picks as someone suggested!) but had to, to protect our future.
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

I was also under the impression we didnt have a 4th round pick this year..

now if we traded away our 4th for the 2009 Draft that wouldnt be a bad move.. that way we are only short one pick this and one next year

my main worry in terms of chemistry is how is Wade gonna take being relegated to a reserve.. remember the only reason he decided to re-sign with us was on the promise he would be starting at guard.. he wanted to leave orginally because he felt he wouldnt get the chance to start here..

so now do we see Wade wanting out and causing problems?

this is exactly what I predicted when they got rid of Marshall..
we'll soon satisfy all of the anti-veteran people by releasing Fox, Sale'vae, and Jimoh..

this team is getting younger..no matter what the negative nellies say..this
means we got a tackle that has blocked for Curtis Martin..for a lot less than Derrick Dockery would have cost..and for a 4th rounder..no brainer
speed that tackles and Captain Chaos..will lead us to the promised land

Wade was promised a CHANCE, he was not promised to a job. Nothing in life is promised. His mediocre play and injury have hurt him. I also believe Samuels injury stunted his growth.

No one's questioning the need we have at the position, only whether Kendall is the answer - the guy is 34 and has missed games in 5 of the last 6 seasons. Is he the answer? I don't know, and don't claim to know. I recognize the need, and I concede that at this point, he looks like the best option.

And can you really say "at all costs" in today's NFL? What if we gave up a first for Kendall? That wouldn't be too much?
