This sucks.
You know the situation is not right when the player feels "shocked" by his release, as the WP reported today.

Lemar played great as a reserve when Marty was here and then made strides to become a starter. Yes he had a bad 2006 season, as well as most of the unit. But he IS young, unlike Godfrey, who to me seems like a short term fix until the young guys develop.
Surely we will regret this move if the young guys we drafted do not pan out.
I think we are just starting to see the begining of this, specially considering that the above article reports Lemar could end up with the Giants alongside Antonio Pierce, one of his close friends.
The move is intriguing to say the least.

Lemar was replaced at MLB and couldn't beat out Rocky on the weakside. Do you really want him playing SAM? Godfrey is more suited to play backup SAM linebacker than Marshall. He's bigger and better at taking on blocks and the plan coming in was for Washington to line up on the D-line on some passing downs. I still don't think he'll be around when the season starts because Campbell is big enough to handle the job but with Washington done for the preseason another true SAM was needed and by no means can this be called a bad move.

Marshall played most of last year nicked up, and the injuries at CB and Saftey where more responsible for 2006 than Marshall's play. His play didn't make up for those that were out, but there were a lot of guys out.

I dunno RiC. I look at it as they needed a LB who could play all 3 positions. Godfrey has had success playing all 3 positions; Marshall as far as I'm aware hasn't played SLB.
Marshall was a good citizen and a good Redskin, but they probably just felt that from a talent/ability aspect, Godfrey was better than Marshall.
It happens, unfortunately. Players come and go in the NFL.

RiC, with all do respect ... what the...???
This is America and we are talking about FOOTBALL!!!
There is a 53-MAN ROSTER and competition for every one of those positions. If you ain't good enough, then hit the bricks! That's how it works, like it or not. Sounds to me like you want a team full of sissy's. If league rules allowed for an unlimited amount of players on a roster, then yes, loyalty might be more prevalent in this league. But that's simply not the case in the NFL. You've got to be better than the next guy if you want to make the team. It's been that way forever, in ALL sports.
Trotter is a 'core' Eagle and it has been said he is almost more popular among his teammates than McNabb, but the Eagles had to let him go too. It's the nature of the business.
Every player knows their job could be in jeopardy at any time. Only the best players make it. And if you'd rather have a team full of "nice guys" rather than a team full of the very best players available, then great, have at it, that's what Girl Scouts is for. Business decisions and player evaluations should never include 'personal feelings', or you will not be successful.
I agree with you from the standpoint that it sucks to have to get rid of guys you like, and Marshall was certainly one of those guys. But at the end of the day, every player in the NFL knows full well he has to earn his place, and if he fails to to perform at a level higher than those trying to take his spot, then it's time to go.
And one other thing... it seems to me that you think Marshall was cut in favor of Godfrey. That's not case. Marshall was cut in favor of our own players already on OUR roster. Godfrey simply fills a void. Gibbs was right in releasing Marshall now, so he might pick up with someone else. But it's not Godfrey who is replacing Marshall. Rocky and Fletcher were the initial ones who bumped Marshall down the list and now Marshall appears to have lost to our 2nd string players as well. Teams keep players for how well they perform on the field, not how popular they are at Tupperware parties.
There is one basic fundamental philosophy you fail to recognize; this is the NFL, no skirts allowed!
That said, I don't want to argue and I do respect your opinions, but I just can't follow that line of thinking in this case. I too wish we could keep all the nice guys, but that just can't happen with a 53-man roster.

RiC, don't get all up in arms about my previous post, I was kidding with most of that and I had 2 or 3 ... okay maybe 4 gin and tonics before I typed that response. Most of that was merely a joke... to a large degree.
My point is this, it doesn't matter what type of business or industry we work in, job security directly relates to job performance. It doesn't matter how nice of a guy you are or how loyal you've been to your company, if you simply cannot produce results, you will be replaced with someone who can. It's the way of the world in every occupation. These aren't children in a schoolyard game of kick ball, these are professionals who get paid to produce results for their respective employers.

My point all along is not that he is a "nice" guy.
My points are that I felt that he IS still good enough to be kept as a BACKUP. He knows the system. He is a hard-working guy. He could play at several spots. I could have even seen us getting Godfrey while keeping Lemar.
I have been saying that we may not REALLY know -the- true reason for this move but the ones given to us so far simply do not fit the facts. Worse yet, they send the wrong signals to other players about the "core Redskins" concept, which seems less credible as an ideal as years pass.
I am not worried about Lemar. He is still too good a guy not to find another spot elsewhere. It is done folks. Good or bad.
Daniel Snyder has defined incompetence, failure and greed to true Washington Redskins fans for over a decade and a half. Stay away from football operations !!!

Ok, that's cool you feel that way. Obviously Gibbs, Williams and Blache don't, and they are the ones with the credibility and the first hand knowledge to make that determination.

Where does it say that "core Redskins" are kept on the roster indefinitely, regardless of production? NO TEAM applies that philosophy. These guys are paid professionals and know they can be cut at any time if their performance is sub par.

Uh... He said LaVar, not Lemar.

Edit:
I just noticed you were talking to yourself. Nevermind.

Bengals signed LB Lemar Marshall, formerly of the Redskins.
Didn't take long for Marshall to be snapped up. The versatile linebacker can play both inside and out. He'll likely be penciled in as a backup on the weak side, behind Landon Johnson, to begin his Bengals career.

That's what im sayin, Washington is the one whos most likely going to be injured, and I wouldnt want Marshall playing strong side whatsoever. I see Marvin picked him up. They can probly use him.
