Skins talking to Falcons about Brunell

The Washington Times reports the Falcons "are believed to be talking to the Redskins about at trade for quarterback Mark Brunell."

Brunell played for Bobby Petrino when Petrino was in Jacksonville from 1999-2001, so the veteran knows the innovative coach's scheme. He would at worst be a decent fallback option if Joey Harrington falters. Todd Collins has played well in the preseason, so Washington is likely willing to move Brunell.

The legs on this rumor continue to grow... As long as we get decent value back and do NOT take any cap hits. I am all for it.

Reading the headline, I had to ask "Are the Falcons nuts?"

But I didn't know Mark played for Petrino, and that makes the deal make sense. Harrington has looked really dreadful. So Mark would be an improvement. And believe me, more than that, the ATL could use someone with great character and leadership right now.

that's one thing I have really liked about Brunell, he pretty much knows his days of a starting job are behind him, so he quietly moves over and helps develop the young guy that took his job.

Do I? Most likely not. But they could be desperate... Who knows. I'd definitely see what type of deal they would consider. Regardless of CAP or #2 QB, we should AT LEAST see what they'd be willing to part with.

Unrealistic? This is a completely reasonable expectation for a player of this quality. Look, once Culpepper goes down in Raider land, the price will go up. Atlanta should move on this, and quickly. :wink:

Also worth bearing in mind that said desperation could increase as the season progresses.

We over paid for TJ Ducket so they can return the favor and over pay for Brunell. I think we should wait and see how Jason's knee feels before we do anything.

I agree that we over paid for Duckett and they owe us one! Seriously though, we could trade away Brunell and just bring back Bramlet as our #3 (that is if he hasn't already signed elsewhere).

I'd be happy to get rid of MB just for the cap space. We don't even need anything for him. I think he's done his job with JC, from here on out, it's JC and the offense.

Bramlet's been signed by Atlanta, which just lost thier prior #3 for the season over the weekend.

Regarding the Brunell deal, I'd do it for a 4th or better. Maybe even a 5th.

Edit: Depending on the cap hit - I'm still not sure of the numbers for that.

Actually, Brunell would be reuniting with "Mr. NFL Europa" in Atlanta. The falcons picked him up last week.

Perhaps the Skins will do a straight up trade? :shock:

Oh Lord!!! have some mercy on all Redskins and Falcons fans. We have too many high quality QBs and they have none. Please Lord, spread the wealth evenly and help us share our riches with those who need it most.

Nobody can deny that Brunell is an -experienced- QB.

Nobody can deny that Petrino knows him well.

Nobody can deny that Brunell would rather be a starter there than a backup here.

So, Oh Lord, open our hearts to the needs of others, PLEASE.

I wouldn't mind this deal for any reasonable draft pick (like Mursilis I'm thinking 4th and above here, maybe a 5th).

I am probably wrong, but isn't it the case that if we trade Brunell, then the Falcons pick up his contract as is, unless they agree to a restructuring? If that's the case, then I believe that the cap hit for the Skins will be zero. . .or so I think. It's been so long since we've entered a trade as the team giving away a player for a draft pick, and not vice versa. :lol:

I don't know how much pull Gibbs has, but his relationship with Brunnell is supposedly very close. And as previously mentioned it is just a "rumor".

Well, the Falcons are serious about finding a veteran, I just heard on the radio that Mike Vick pled guilty and will receive nearly 3 years, and MB is losing the battle for #2.

If any 'rumor' of the last few months has any validity whatsoever, this may be the most believeable.

So let me get this straight -- eat $6.5 Millon worth of cap to then have Todd Collins as our number two, a guy who has less than twenty regular season completions in the last decade, but must be FANTASTIC because of his LIMITED performance in two meaningless pre-season games.

... and to have a guy in Palmer who doesn't even have any practice time as a third, let alone any real game experience.

... and on the heels of our # 1 quarterback nicking his knee.

For people asking about the cap, we've ALREADY paid Brunell $3.5M this year... that's gone no matter what... we owe him $3M more if we trade him (but it would be in the form of dead cap in 2008.)

The other team only picks up annual salaries in a trade, the original team eats all of the guaranteed bonus money.

Why don't the Redskins celebrate that we're not in cap hell anymore by making moves that put us there again. :rock:

And all to have Todd Collins, no third QB (we'd probably go out and grab a journeyman rather than rely on palmer as the third - he looks destined for the PS) and some second day draft pick in a crop where we have all of our picks (for once).

Only the coaches will know if this true or not, but maybe Brunell has nothing left. If that is the case we need to get what ever we can out of him. If he still has something to offer then we may have some leverage, in that case try and squeeze what we can out of Atlanta.

UNLESS, the negotiation itself takes into consideration these factors and compensates for them.

So, is this trade IMPOSSIBLE??? Not at all. Difficult, for sure. Impossible? Not at all.

Is this trade desirable? Yes! It is time for Brunell to have a fresh start elsewhere. It is time that this team looks itself in the mirror and acknowledges that to have picked him was the worst decision ever made by Joe Gibbs in his second tenure. We have had enough torture already.
