That's what the Redskins told the press -- along with Washington's dislocated left elbow.

Campbell leaves preaseason game with knee injury
Associated Press

LANDOVER, Md. -- Washington Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell left Saturday night's preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the first quarter of with a knee injury.

Campbell was hit flush on the left knee by Steelers defensive end Brett Keisel, who beat rookie free agent left tackle Stephon Heyer and stumbled as he kept up his pursuit. Keisel was assessed with a personal foul for a low hit on a quarterback in the pocket.

Campbell, who completed the pass for a 29-yard gain to tight end Chris Cooley, grabbed his knee in pain and remained on the field for several minutes before gingerly limping to the sideline. The Redskins said the initial diagnosis was a bruised knee.

Campbell walked to the locker room but returned to the sidelines later in the first half with his knee heavily wrapped.

Heyer was playing in place of Pro Bowl tackle Chris Samuels, who has been sidelined with a sprained knee.

Campbell was replaced by Todd Collins, who is competing with Mark Brunell for the Redskins' No. 2 spot.

Thank god its just a bruised knee. They haven't said but he'll probably be out a couple weeks.

I didn't see the game and JC said that he didn't think it was a dirty hit...but he said he didn't see him coming...

To those that saw it......was it a dirty hit?

He seems pretty confident in his knee on the postgame show, so that's obviously a good sign. He is walking around, so it doesn't appear to be too severe.

After the game, Campbell said: "It was a scary moment. Fortunately, my foot was able to move a little bit and probably saved me from a torn ligament."

Campbell said he expected the injured knee would be stiff over the next couple of days, but added that he would "exercise out the soreness."

Steelers are pretty good at the low hits on the qb. The hit on Campbell looked very similar to the play on which the Steelers knocked Carson Palmer out of the playoffs 2 years ago.

Dirty players maybe.....? Goodell should do something to improve protection of the qb.

be sure to approach this with a cautious optimism as the mri could reveal torn cartilage or a knick which would not be as severe but still not good

The Steelers do not play dirty. The play where Palmer was injured was where the defender was blocked into him. In this case, per Triple X, the exact same thing happened.

It's not so.... I just saw the replay. It looked like he lunged at Campbell all by himself.

I can't buy that.

The Steeler D-lineman had cleanly beaten Hayer around the edge. He slipped making his turn toward JC, went to his knees and lunged forward from that position.

I'm more convinced now that it's just part of Football. I don't think it was malicious. New season, players are excited and want to make a statement.

But as Jon Jansen said: it's not like the Pitt guy was a 3rd stringer hoping to get a starting job.

Hope to see JC next week.

Steelers have always been dirty players. Remember the Bengals vs Steelers game when that dude rolled in to Carson Palmer.
