Simeon Rice cut

Talk about the AFC, NFC, the NFL Draft, College Football... anything football that has no Washington Football Team relevance.

I was just about to post the same item. Here is some info:

BUCS BOUNCE RICE

In a move that is not a shocker but is still nevertheless surprising, the Bucaneers have cut defensive end Simeon Rice, according to Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com.

Rice was due to earn a base salary of $7.25 million in 2007, the final year of his contract. Per Glazer, the Bucs asked Rice to take a pay cut, and Rice refused.

Glazer reports that Rice had checked into camp, and was plucked from dinner for a meeting at which he was informed of the decision.

The move creates $7.25 million in cap space for the Bucs, which could be used to sign quarterback Daunte Culpepper, with whom the team met last week. Culpepper reportedly is seeking a one-year deal, which shouldn't be a problem for Gruden, who realizes that this one year could be his last year in Tampa.

Look for Rice to be courted by the Detroit Lions, who are coached by former Bucs defensive line coach Rod Marinelli. Other possibilities (as we see it) are the Bears, Steelers, and Vikings.

The thing I am worried about is that he failed his team physical when he reported to camp today. Who knows if he will be ready for the season.

Sorry, but I'd pass on him and hope the Skins will too. I know he's had some good years, but he is just another 'seasoned' vet who will want a big contract.

I would like to see some of our guys step up and I really think Carter will come out swinging this year.

I'm also really intrigued by Alex Buzbee out of Georgetown and Justin Hickman from UCLA. I have a feeling one or both of these guys could possibly be a nice find and surprise a lot of people. I'm pulling for these guys and would pass on Rice.

isnt he a pass rush specialist? by all means we could use that but with that being Carters job on one end .. adding Rice really wont aid the team in the run defense department..

is anyone sure of how he plays against the run because I could be wrong but I know Daniels is solid there and while we need more of a pass rush I expect Carter to step up now that hes had a full year back at DE ( he was playing LB the previous 2 season before that) and also we will be using Washington in 3 point stance on some 3rd downs and pass rushing plays and Gregg likes to use alot of linebacker blitzes as well so I just dont see Rice being a good fit

That's definitely a worry - what's the issue there?

Why don't the Redskins sign him to a 1 year deal for the league minium. That way it works out for both of them. If he doesn't pan out for the Redskins then he is gone after one year. If he has a monster year then maybe they can look at a longer deal.

He could possibly be good for another 4 or 5 years. I say give him a reasonable contract for a year or 2 if he'll take it. Better than any pass rusher that has played here in a long long time.

  Hello!!!

](*,) Rice FAILED his physical. ](*,)

HE FAILED HIS PHYSICAL!

What difference does it make how good he USED to be when he currently can't pass a basic physical examination.

Maybe we should go after Al Wilson and call up Bruce Smith and Deion Sanders, since you all seem to love aging vets long past their prime who couldn't beat my six year old daughter in a 40-yard dash.

sigh...

i dont think they'd do that, it'd probably make a lot of teams not even consider him, and why would TB do that to one of their greatest players?

I wonder if some of you watch football games or if you only get the NFL.com game tracker and have to rely on merely stats for your 'knowledge'.

By the end of last season, Andre Carter was dominant. Even with vry little inside penetration, Carter was in the backfield wreaking havoc pretty regularly from about game 10 on.

Carter himself has said that it took him a lot longer than he expected, to get comfortable in GW's defense. I was pretty jacked up about the way carter was playing down the stretch and mentioned it repeatedly in articles on the last few games.

Carter wasn't getting ANY help anywhere else on the line, but Corny's back and looks in great shape and ready to put last year and the injury bug behind him.

I'd sign Simeon Rice if he'd sign a veteran league minimum contract... I'd sign ANYONE with good credentials to a vet league min contract to give them a shot. You can get rid of them with absolutely NO bearing on the cap situation whatsoever... so why not take a flyer in that instance.

But other than that... I think Carter will surprise a lot of people that didn't seem to see how much he emerged by the end of 2006.

My 2 cents
Sean Taylor was one of a kind, may he rest in peace.

Wasn't Rice set to make $7M+ this year? Why would he sign for the vet minimum?

Ok, maybe he would because he failed his physical and can't find a new team to pay him top dollar, but the vet minimum? Seems unlikely. I agree with BossHog that you'd sign almost anyone for the vet minimum, but I just don't see Rice doing that. I'm sure he still thinks he has value. Whether he does or not, I don't know. I'd still pass on him.

Boss,
I have to disagree with you about Carter! Wreaking havoc is an extreme exaggeration. Yes he was finally putting some preasure on QBs, but havoc is a bit much. While he was playing the run "better" late, he was getting shoved around like a toy the first half of the season and still having a hard time at the end. Did S. Jackson and Tiki make it to 500 ayrds combined? Yes, the whole D played poorly, but people still ran left an awlful lot!

Rice visiting Giants, with others interested

Simeon Rice, a 33-year old pass-rushing end second to Michael Strahan on the active career sack list, was set to arrive in New York last night and have dinner with New York Giants officials.

Wednesday, he'll take a physical, as the Giants want to check out his injured shoulder. Rice has also attracted interest from the Washington Redskins and Tennessee Titans and is not in a rush to sign anywhere.

That's your prerogative.

But 4 sacks in the last 5 games would equate to 12 or 13 sacks in the season (at the same pace). That might not be Michael Strahan numbers, but it's better than we've seen for quite some time.

I've said this on this board 100 times... Carter just started to get it mid-season last year... by game 10 he was playing really, really well. Ironically, The Times ran an article on the exact same thing yesterday.
