as sacriligious as this might sound due to my aspirations to be one, i'm going to say this anyway: AGENTS are ruining the game! I'm not talking any agents, I'm talking about the ones like Drew Rosenhaus, who, while they get the most for their clients, still decide that they are going to be sniveling whiny penny mongers for their clients to play a game that people would give anything for. players are usually humble guys, as we've seen from LaRon and thousands more, but the agents are the ones who are holding these guys out of camp, filling their ears with sounds of cash registers ringing.
i think that the NFL needs to implement some sort of rule or regulation on the signing of draft picks that allows a two-season wait and see period where the rookie makes the veteran minimum, and if they live up to expectations then they can move forward from there with a richer contract. while that may seem idealistic, as we've seen from the Ryan Leafs and Heath Shulers of the world, first round picks don't always pan out and it would be financially beneficial to the team and its success as well to abide by that.

Hasn't Rosenhaus done pretty well in his dealings with the Redskins? I usually read that he and Snyder have a good relationship (though it seems like he's a major pain to a lot of other teams).

I think they scratch each others backs from time to time... Drew cuts the Danny some slack in dealings with Taylor, Moss and Portis, Danny makes an offer to improve Lance Briggs status in dealings with Chi-town... and so it goes...

Agents may in fact have a huge say in when and how a player gets signed, however don't kid yourselves......the players have the final say and if they want to get to camp on time and be a part of the team then they can demand that the agents make it happen!!! Honestly i can't blame rookies wanting the money or any vet. for that matter b/c beyond the playing it is a business and if i was in there shoes i would want to get paid!!! No money is guaranteed except for the signing bonus and that's all that matters

Yeah it definitely sounds idealistic, and it also definitely sounds like you better hope that no prospective clients ever read that if you really want to be a player agent.

The truth of the matter is that the league DOES have very specific rules for rookies and their contracts.
1) There is a rookie pool allocated to each team that is a pre-determined percentage of your overall salary cap.
For each League Year of this Agreement, each Club shall have a Rookie Allocation, which shall be
its proportional share of the Entering Player Pool, calculated based on the number, round, and position of the
Club’s selection choices in the Draft. The Rookie Allocation formula shall be agreed upon by the NFL and the
NFLPA and shall remain in effect for the duration of the Agreement, unless the NFL and the NFLPA otherwise
agree.
The league also ammended the CBA in 2006 with a clause that prevents the club's from completely backloading rookie contracts. (No Player Contract signed by a Rookie may provide for an annual increase in Salary of more than twenty-five percent (25%) of the contract’s first League Year Salary)
As an example, the Redskins' Rookie Allocation this year was less than $3.5 million. So the sum total of the Redskins cap hit this year on ALL rookie contract signings cannot exceed $3.5M. That number is assigned by the league and is not open to any interpretation... that's what the Redskins get to sign their guys.
2) Part of the problem is that the rookie pool percentage doesn't ALWAYS go up. So... if the rookie pool stays the same, it pretty much means that this year's draft picks have to sign for exactly what last year's draft picks did. Agents don't like that. Agents are always pushing for a little more, so in the instance of rookies and a limited 'pool' it can create issues. But it also seems smarter to work a very nominal increase to the rookie pool EVERY year.
3) Players are really only guaranteed exactly what you asked for when they're drafted - league minimum. In fact, it's written right into the CBA too:
Required Tender: A Club that drafts a player shall be deemed to have automatically tendered the
player a one year NFL Player Contract for the Minimum Active/Inactive List Salary then applicable to the
player pursuant to the terms of this Agreement. The NFL or the Club shall provide the player with notice of
such Required Tender before or immediately following the Draft.
Anything else is negotiated in good faith with the client. The league can't do much more than that to level the playing field.
4) The league ammended the CBA in a big way to give rookies new 'likely to be earned' incentives. I'm not going through the entire CBA extension but sufficeth to say that the league came up with an incentive program that rewarded those draft picks that made contributions to their teams.
Teams pay big money for top draft picks for a reason too. Teams don't have to wait 'two or three years' for a draft pick to affect their bottom line. Big time draft picks and signings can put fans in the seats immediately.
Sure the agents are partly to blame when they're unreasonable, but capitalism is capitalism.
The NFL is a very well run league as it pertains to checks and balances on both sides of the union.

Sean Taylor was one of a kind, may he rest in peace.

So the players should be risking their health and entire career while playing for wages that are far below what teams would otherwise be paying them, and all of this is because some rookies will miss a few days of camp? I don't follow the logic.

edit: What BH said. . .

that makes a lot more sense, thanks BH...i guess i wasn't the first one to think of that hahaha...i do want to be an agent though, but most of the athletes i've ever talked to are the kind of guys who want to get paid, yes, but will play to earn it. maybe that's just the college athlete mentality right now, but it seems as though more and more athletes are willing to sacrifice the billions and settle for the millions, at least for the first few years, if that makes sense.

To get him into CAMP ON TIME. That's a slightly important distinction to make.

Yeah, I saw John Clayon discuss the status of the top 10 draft picks and whether they will be signed in time. Referring to Landry, he mentioned something like (not his exact words): "When was the last time you heard Snyder being reluctant to fork out money?" He also mentioned that the Redskins and Landry just started talking contract recently.
Sounds like he's confident Landry will be signed by Friday. He mentioned a lot of other players probably holding out. Landry was not one of them mentioned.

Except Drew isn't Landry's agent - Joel Segal is, last I heard.

My mistake, thought l read somewhere he was a Rosenhaus guy. I still believe this would be standard practice for most agents.

Why? Did the University of Maryland beat Duke?!?!
Just kidding. I thought the same thing.
Some people just need something to worry about.

It doesn't help that Troy Palomalo just signed the biggest NEW safety contract ever. I'm sure those numbers will be used as a guage for Landry.
I'd think that those numbers would effect our resigning of Taylor moreso than Landry...
If anything he should receive a bit more than what Taylor got.
