Dear All
After discussion with my wife the trip is on. However there are a couple of alterations.
1. We are still flying into Washington 29/12.
2. We are staying until 2nd Jan
3. We are then going to New York until the 6th Jan.
Are there any good celebrations on New Years eve and whats open New Years Day.
Hail

The famous celebration on New Yera's Eve is at Times Square. You need to get there about 10 or so, and won't be let out until after "the ball" drops from the old NY Times bulding. Noisy, tooting horns, funny hats, confetti.
It can be uncomfortable for anyone nervous in crowds. The police section off the crowd with barricades to prevent a stampede. Your section will be friendly but cozy.
As at Snyder Stadium (or whatever Danny calls it this year...Jack Kent Cooke? FedEx?) , dress warmly. There's not much colder than standing in one place when it's about freezing.
Usually fireworks all over.
Depending on your musical tastes, check Carnegie Hall. They usually have a group play the 6 Brandenburgs. There will be lots of other spots for music. Check out Lincoln Center. For jazz, look at Jazz at Lincoln Center (60th and Broadway), or the Village Vanguard (if it's still open) or the Iridium. On "velvet-rope clubs" I have no opinion.
Restaurants take reservations in advance...usually two "sittings" so people can finish and get to T-Square. More expensive than usual, of course. Also reservations for after the ball-drop. (Oh, forgot...the dollar dropped against the pound, so this isn't so bad!)
Guy Lombardo and he Royal Canadians play every year at the Waldorf Hotel, I think, even though he's been dead for twenty or thirty years.
MTV has its studio in T-Square, so their might be music, or garish videos.
By the way, Times Square is NOT a square. It is the intersection of Broadway and 7th Avenue...more like a giant 'X'. (My wife recently had an exasperating discussion with a bunch of German tourists who asked, "Where is Times Square?" She pointed up to the sign, said, you're standing in it." They said, germanically, "No, no, we want the REAL Times Square". After three rounds, my wife walked away.
Incidentally, don't let the noise frighten you off. It is good-natured and peaceful. Just don't go if you get nervous crowded in the middle of a million people.
Get hotel reservations NOW. They fill up.
Overall...Manhattan is a great place to be that night. Good choice.

Thanks for that.
Accomodation is sorted. Protected a little by the £s strength.
Going back to Washington on the Wednesday seriously hoping we have a play off game at Fedex on the Saturday and I can con the missus into another game.

I agree with Welch that New Year celebrations are more fun in NY than DC for sure. So, I would re-consider the dates.
But I feel that you are falling as an unsuspecting victim. You do not believe me? Well, here are the facts:
1. Wife does not want to goto Vegas because it is a long trip (with all the -fantastic- New Year shows there and having flown across the Atlantic???)
2. Wife chooses NY (-after- New Year???)
Well, what are fellow Redskins fans for? I better warn you and your pocket. The BIGGEST SALES in NY and probably the entire USA take place just after the New Year celebrations. We call them "boxing day sales" over this side. Think Harrod's just ten times bigger all over Manhattan and beyond throughout the greater NY City.
Wait now, she is actually -saving- you money. She will persuade you about all the savings she would make you if only she purchases all of these things here and at these really good and lowered prices. And she would be RIGHT. Believe it or not, NY is less expensive than London and the US dollar is down. So, she is right.
BUT there is always a sale in one top place and another sale of the same stuff at another less expensive location. By this I mean that a sale at Bloomingdales is different than one at Macy's than one at other stores. You will not go wrong on -any- of these stores compared to London but you can save quite a big amount of money or double the volume of your purchases if you choose the right place. The -KEY- while in NY is to know where to go to buy the BEST stuff at the BEST price. It is a hobby that some people have perfected into an art form.
There are a bunch of shops in the garment district where you can find the same top quality stuff you find in the top tier shops. I can recommend a few passed on to me by friends. Beware brother.
By the way, while in DC, and considering that England has many great Museums, please take the time to learn about some of the best contributions to technology and history made by the revolutionaries down south from us over the last two centuries at the Smithsonian Museum. They actually have done something right with that tea tax money they decided not to pay to your country around 1775.

The trip we finally settled on is to go to Washington for two nights and take in the game. Then on New Years eve fly to New York. Do 3 nights in New York taking in Times square and she did mention some shopping. Then back to DC.
I think we may do some of the cultural things when we get back.
I am hoping and praying we have a home game in pay offs and I manage to get some tickets.
You mention the garment district. Where is that and what are some of the shops called.
Regards.

If you go shopping in DC, you probably want to go to the Georgetown area. I know nothing about New York so I won't be able to help you there.

The garment district is surrounded by the Madison Square Garden, another worthy visit if there is a good basketball or hockey game on, Pennsylvania (Penn) Station and the Jacob Javits Center where the International NY Auto Show takes place around March every year:

For her:

Pradoxically, my personal favourite brand-name bargain shop is not located in the Garment District. It is named Filene's Basement and it is located in Union Square (although there are other two less stocked sites in town):
http://www.filenesbasement.com/index.jsp
4 Union Square South
New York, NY 10003
212-358-0169
To give you an example, you can buy a top of the line Ermenegildo Zegna gentleman's business suit normally retailing at over US$2,100 along Madison Avenue for a third of that price. The discounts range from 66% to 80% of the original retail price on ALL top quality brand-name items. You culd get a cashmere sweater for $20 (if they are still available in a highly variable stock).
But she could also check Loehmann's and S&W in Manhattan:

Madison Avenue is THE gentleman's clothing avenue in NY where you can buy the best dress shirts at Brooks Brothers (only second to Taylor-made shirts):
http://www.brooksbrothers.com/
All the stores mentioned include items for both genders. Enjoy.
