D.C. sports (Redskins) comical?

Post by Gibbs' Hog »

Not sure if this article was posted yet, but apparently some idiot is claiming D.C. is the worst sports city in the country. (I'm also not sure if this should be in the Lounge, but there's plenty of Redskins talk in here)

http://cbs.sportsline.com/spin/story/10230805

He has this to say about the Skins:

As the flagship of the Washington area, there is no NFL franchise, of the ones 10 years or older, that is routinely more laughable than the Burgundy and Gold. Their owner is delusional, their management team misguided and their coaching staff unorganized.

and...

The Redskins' rivalry with NFC East teams, the Cowboys in particular, is non-existent and the team's long-term prospects hardly shine.

If this has been posted, then I suspect one of those nifty little "this has been posted already" or "moved to another thread" notes shall follow this one. (a search yielded no results for mua)

If not, what does everyone think? The thought, "full of baloney, with perhaps a valid point here or there" entered my mind.

i actually agree with most of it. i do think gibbs will stay for the full 5 years of his deal, but other than that..... it stings a little, but it isn't that far from the truth. the only thing more laughable than the skins on the field the last ten years, is the redskins off the field. no comment on the other DC teams mentioned, didn't read any of it.

I didnt click the link so they dont get any additional pub... but i will say that the part about the rivalery with the cowboys being non existant is the insane ramblings of a certified ass clown at best.

After losing to the boys' for like 5 years, Joe Gibb's coached skins have:

A: Dropped the biggest margin of victory against them in the history of
the rivalry, en route to a playoff bid.

B: Snatched Victory from the jaws of defeat with 2 late LOOOOONG bomb
TD's to Santana.

C: Orchastrated the most ridiculous end to a game, by blocking a surefire
game winning FG, and Turning that around to make our own Game
winning FG, on the very last play of regulation no less.

So to say that the battle and rivalry is dead is just lazy journalism, and an obivous attempt to enter the fray of all the redskin bashing that has been so en vouge the last 5-7 years. What a tired act.

Just to think that somebody actually gets paid to write crap like that makes me sick.

No question: it is the slowest time of the off-season.

The Redskins one was a bit too much hate, the Wizards have an interesting situation. Yes, they had to deal with Michael Jordan situation, but they fixed it mostly. They somehow got Caron Butler out of Kwame Brown and they got Antawn Jamison out of Jerry Stackhouse.

Amazing, the WIZARDS can turn around a terrible situation following the Michael Jordan disaster(Even the wins he produced were just enough to keep them away from the likes of Yao Ming, LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, and Dwyane Wade), but the Redskins can't.

Abe Pollin cleaned house, Dan Snyder should do the same the second Gibbs leaves coaching. Let Gibbs stay as Team President(with no absolute power, though) and then clean out everyone else. Hire a respected coach and were on our way back to the playoffs perenially.
"I said when he retired that Joe Gibbs was the best coach I'd ever faced." - Bill Parcells

True. No explanation needed.

Their owner is delusional

In a football sense, true. Over stepping his boundaries.

their management team misguided

Double true. LOL, you already know.

their coaching staff unorganized.

True. They could be referring to the squabbles on defense last year. Gibbs taking control from Saunders. Spurrier not being a coach and having power taken from him. Shotty getting screwed.

I could give explanations as to why these things are true. You can find these faults in ANY/ALL NFL teams. But the one thing that makes the Skins unique is that it's "routinely consistent" in negative ways.

However, this year appears to be a year of transition from these old ways. But the key will be consistency in the positive and no longer consistency in the negative... My 2 cents

It's funny that this jerk says are short term prospects are horrible with a new QB in a tough NFC East. Has Eli shown any of you anything? Is Romo one game over .500 and a major choke in a playoff game worth bragging about? Does anyone in Philly really want McNabb, including his own coaches? What this kid doesn't realize is that there is more love for the Redskins than any other franchise. We sell out 93,000 every game plus have a waiting list of people wanting tickets. Before the Patriots started winning did anyone in Boston care? NO. Dallas is building a billion dollar stadium when they can't even fill the little crappy one they have now, except when the Redskins are in town. That must be a mistake because there is no rivalry anymore. What a jerk.

As long as the Cardinals are still in the NFL, no other team can be the most laughable NFL franchise. In 2005, they had both a top 10 offense AND a top 10 defense, and still found a way to lose 10 games. Last year, they lead Chicago by 20 at the half, and held Chicago's offense to 3(!!) points, and still managed to blow that game too. The Cardinals have elevated losing to an art form.

Yeah, I agree. I'm in for

The Skins under Snyder are laughable?

You know? Early on in his career, many thought Albert Einstein was a wack job too.

Point being, many experiments fail before one finally pans out. And that 'one' usually ends up being a 'big one'. Just think where we'd be today if every great scientist and scholar had given up at early failures.

Spurrier was an experiment, no doubt. But NO ONE, and I mean NO ONE can deny that Snyder hasn't currently put together arguably the best 'collection of coaches' the league has ever seen on one team at the same time. Gibbs, Saunders, Williams, Blache... are you kidding me??? Even my friend who is a Philly fan is in awe.

Will it equate to a Super Bowl win? Who knows. But their resumes are pretty impressive and no one can take that away from them.

My 2 cents

It's just what Edward Bennett Williams did. First came Otto Graham, who was a mistake. Then Lombardi and George Allen. Both got as much money as they needed to make the team good. Allen built a grass practice field and an astro-turf field. People thought that was crazy, wasteful, absurd. George had his reasons.

People sniped at Jack Kent Cooke because he paid head-coach money (or near it) to Richie Petibon, the defensive coordinator. Also paid more for Doug Williams to back up Jay Schroeder than any other number 2 QB got in the NFL. Silly, right?
