Canada vs USA, Gold Cup

Post by gus »

Anyone following this soccer cup? Panama is already out, but gave a scare to Mexico in the quarter finals. Hope Canada and Guadalupe make it to the finals (don't ask me where Guadalupe is).

HaiL,

I am -very- happy with the game of Canada, which makes you wonder: Why could they not play over the ENTIRE 90 minutes with the intensity, speed and focus with which they played during the last 20"

Canada's second goal should have counted. It was a good and legitimate goal. The line judge from Suriname made a HUGE mistake. It would have been great to have gone to extra time. It is one of those close calls in every game that could have gone either way but it was a bad one based on the video played several times on TV.

Having said so, USA started on fire and it had clearly many more opportunities to score. Donovan played the -worst- game of his life. He had at least two clear chances to score and missed embarrassingly. The Mexican ref made a huge favour to USA by expelling Bradley from the game. He is clearly an inferior player who just plays for the US side because his dad is the national coach. He was very criticised on Canadian TV.

Difficult to tell who might win the Cup on Sunday. Both the national teams of USA and Mexico are playing some of their worst football ever (with very few exceptions, together with the rest of Concacaf by the way). Overall, I am very disappointed by the current level of the Concacaf. When a small island team not even affiliated to FIFA, which is put together with some second rate French players only -four- days in advance of the tournament, reaches the semi-finals, it speaks volumes of the low-level with which the region is playing.

In perspective though, this is like the pre-season for the national teams of USA and Mexico. Their true international test comes in the America Cup to be played against the rest of the continent in Venezuela just few weeks from now. They might rise to the occasion or just plain collapse if they stick to their current level. I am not putting any faith in either one of them at this time.

Panamá jugó muy bien Gus. Podría jugar mejor si la Federación nacional los apoya con continuidad.

A triunph??? Wasn't that some sort of three winged creature of Greek mythology? :)

I just can't follow any football at this time of year, unless it involves England. The absurd length of our football season over here means that I hate the game by the end of May.

After seeing it, I agree 100%. That offsides call was BOGUS!

Still, USA had better chances and deserved the win.

Sorry, I was thinking of the famous motorcycles built in your country before the Japanese wiped them out of the market. But even those are spelled correctly.

I must confess though: I used to LOVE Triumphs and their sound. It used to be difficult to choose between Triumphs and BSA bikes from year to year quite a while back.

By the way, has anybody tried to resucitate those bikes into the world market? I have fond memories of one 750 cc a guy used to have in my hood when I was growing up.

What is your team in England?

He's said a few times that it's Arsenal. Or, at least, he started to like them when they were good. Then he switched to Chelsea, and right now I believe he's a Man U fan. Go figure

Oh, please, you're killing me. :thump:

Actually, I have said before that my team is Brighton & Hove Albion. A lower league team, who came nearest to glory when coming within a gnat's whisker of beating Man Utd in the 1983 FA Cup Final.

I love the way Man U play though. I just like good football, unless it's played by Crystal Palace, who are to Brighton as Philly are to the Redskins.

I really know nothing about bikes. My dad used to ride a Triumph, but that was before I was born. I seem to recall that there was something of a relaunch of the Norton brand a few years ago, but it was backed by the Japanese anyway. Don't know about Triumph or BSA.

Gold Cup final USA v. Mexico tomorrow Sunday at 3 pm EST.

Let us hope for a good match and that each brings the best game of one another. Hopefully, they will play their better game of the tournament tomorrow. Both teams have played rather poorly in this tournament so far.

And the U.S. wins it. Now if they could just figure out how to do it in Mexico City once in a blue moon... I mean, come on, Aztec Stadium (yes, I know, I Anglicized it) just hasn't been very friendly to the U.S. in the past.

Congratulations guys!

But is it not a SHAME that the game did not makeit to TV in the USA -and- Canada? There was all kinds of crap but not this final. SHAME.

Since, I did not watch it, I can not say whether it was a decent game or the same low-level football they played tournament-wise.

The game was on FOX Soccer Channel in Arizona (and in English). It was a very good effort by the US squad. The second half was some of the best soccer the team has played under the new coach. Too bad for the "home" crowd. They left beaten again by the Americans. The winning goal was a world-class finish by an up-and-coming American midfielder.
Regarding the Canada game. Canada played surprisingly well. They are a strong team and will make a good run at one of the spots in the WC in 2010. The offisidesd call was a bad call....he was on-side, but the play should never have happened since the extra time (4:00) had elapsed before the ball was even played.
Beat Dallas!!!
