Springs in DC 6/5

Shawn Springs Due June 5

Washington Redskins cornerback Shawn Springs said he intends to report June 5 to Redskins Park after skipping the first two weeks of the voluntary organized team activities.
"I'm excited to get back in town and crack jokes with my teammates and catch up with my boys," he said. He added that he would have reported next week, but no OTAs are scheduled because of the Memorial Day holiday. They'll resume June 5.
Springs, who battled through a sports hernia injury last season and has had a history of injury problems, has been working out and rehabbing on his own in Arizona. He said his program will be completed and he will report for the final two weeks of OTAs. Minicamp is set for June 15-17.

I think with proper rotation, Springs can stay healthy all year long. And that'll only help us push to the post season. CB is one position that I really feel confident about. Put it to you this way, I feel better about CB than I do at RB right now.

I'm feeling good at both of those positions. Portis's injury got blown out of proportion by the haters. I'm more concerned with the RG and DL positions.

I don't blame him for the delays.

Thinking back a year.

1. The training staff mis-handled his injury
2. They tried to get him to take a pay-cut
3. They dangled him as trade bait.

So, this was smart of him. But I think he'll be back and feeling better than he did last year. So, that's a plus.

it is good to see him ready to play, but the financial part of the business dictates that even if he is kept this year, it will most likely be his last. I think w/ our new found depth in the secondary he will be healthier and his value will rise, either for trade possibilities or at least for him to get a raise elsewhere. Football is a business, all you can do is take advantage of someones abilities while they are affordable.

I'm all in support of Springs, it's often that organizations screw players and now it's just the other way around. I mean seriously, what do we care, as long as he's out there playing good I couldn't care less. If they want the players there make it mandatory, if they're not....oh well. Yeah it's great to have them all there but what can you do if it's not mandatory.

I really don't think it's going to matter to be honest with you...

its all well and good about Springs coming back, but instead of wanting to play football, he says he wants to come and crack jokes with his teammates and catch up with his boys. Granted, being on a team is just that, being on a team, but that also means working hard to make up the two weeks of camp that you missed.

i don't know whether he'll be around this season, but i think that in the grand scheme of things, the danny and coach gibbs will convince shawn that they need him, but as a part of that "team" that he is so eager to go back to now, he needs to restructure his contract and take one for, oh...the TEAM. if he can't do that, then is it really worth our dollar to keep him at the expense of others who are more willing to work hard in camp and be there for their teammates as well as help us win games?
Sean, may you always rest in peace and look down on us with the same love that we look up to you.

You are aware he's spent his time working out and getting in the best shape possible, correct?

yes, i am aware of that, but he needs to do it with his teammates, especially because a lot of players look up to him as a leader. he isn't the most vocal person i've ever seen, and that article may tell it differently, but he leads by example and if he's not there working out with his teammates, he's letting them down.

These are grown men, I'm sure they aren't crying because Springs is a few weeks late to VOLUNTARY OTA's.

If he's letting the team down, he's doing so by not being healthy which his current regime is supposed to remedy.

You basically want Springs to do whats in the best interest of the team so they can just cast him anyway like garbage eventually. He's doing what's best for himself and his career and I don't blame him.

Cast him away like garbage? Aren't they paying him $5M+ this season? If he's going to be cast off after this season or next, that's not a bad parting gift.

Come on, we all know that in the NFL players don't get guaranteed contracts... Organizations can get out of contracts but if a player holds out its an issue... It's a double standard and I don't really care if a player in certain circumstances will stand up for himself.

I know someone is going to say, sure they're making millions and blah blah blah blah...but they also have to deal with a life long amount of pain afterwards and/or during.

Shawn, do what you gotta do to get your body back to top tier condition. If the Skins training staff can't do it, then keep to your regime. My 2 cents Nobody will care when we make the playoffs, people just need something else to complain about and since you're not here baking girl scout cookies with Carlos, it's an issue.

I understand contracts are not guaranteed, but he already declined to accept a salary reduction, and the team has said they're keeping him at his current salary, so he IS going to get paid quite well this season. That's not exactly being treated like garbage. And I don't begrudge him the money either - I recognize the physical abuse these guys take for this sport. I also really don't have an issue with him not being here yet - he's enough of a veteran that he can probably skip these OTAs without it really affecting his play. I just hope he's healthy and ready to go come the season opener.

Um, CLL, Springs WILL get a very nice paycheck from the Redskins this season. And you can't just blah blah blah past millions of dollars. Lots of people have tough jobs that leave them with life-long afflictions and they don't have millions to fall back on. I'm not suggesting for a second that playing in the NFL is easy but the money mitigates a lot of that.

I can't say that I agree. One thing that I know is that it is up to the player to get himself in the best shape possilbe and be ready to play. Thats what he did. He put himself in an environment to suceed.

And I can't blame him for that, he and the secondary can bake cookies and hold hands from June till Dec.

LOL, what would you have rather him said?

I can't wait to get in here and start our journey to a super bowl win? Would that have been more sufficient and made you able to sleep at night?

I have no problem with Springs playing for what the Redskins and he agreed he should play for. The Redskins now think he should take a pay cut just because they want him to. Lets be serious how many of you with a contract would say OK to a request to give back part of that pay?

If I am correct that he is under contract for 07, 08, and 09, they should keep him for 08 too. If they cut him next March he will count $5M against the cap or or $7.4M if they keep him. Can you really find a corner as good as Springs for $2.4M.

I know next March they can use one of the two cut now and count like a June 1 cut and that would free up almost $5M of cap space. I'm sure the big question will be how he plays this year.

i don't blame springs one bit. his days as a cb in the nfl are numbered, not just with the skins. gotta look out for numero uno.

that said, he has all the leverage in the world. i mean what are the skins gonna say? "we'll just have carlos take over for him." ??? his coverage skills are ... whatever. not to mention the boy couldn't catch a raindrop with a styrofoam cup the size of an olympic swimming pool. ROTFALMAO

that said, gonna be good to have him at the park.

Especially in light of the insane contracts people were signing in this past offseason, he knows he could get paid elsewhere. He has all the leverage, really.

I hope you're not referring to me as a "hater" because I pointed out how serious tendonitis in your knee can be. That's a medical fact. You can downplay it but it doesn't change what it is. I'll leave it at that and keep my "I told you so's" to myself when this is revealed on the playing field.

I think people will see in retrospect if they don't realize it already (or are in denial) that we got the short end of the stick on the Bailey deal with Denver. Sure Portis is talented, but did he ever fit into our scheme? Not so sure about that. Now he thinks it's a good idea to weigh in on Michael Vick's situation? I respect his opinion, but it was pretty stupid of him to make it public. If he backs up his prediction to get us into the NFC championship, I'll start listening to him. Right now, he's been pretty disappointing for me as a fan since last preseason. Can't question his heart, but where is his head at? Man, Miami isn't exactly a brain factory.

As far as Springs goes, watch the tapes of the Dallas game in Washington last year and tell me if you want this guy to start at CB for us. When he was healthy, Springs was very good, more than adequate. In that game it was pathetic how he was getting beat by TO and Crayton. If you ask me, he's a really expensive nickel back now. His best days are long behind him in Seattle. I don't think it buys us anything to jettison him though. Like Portis, I hope they sit him in reserve as long as it takes to get him healthy for a playoff push.

Starters: Carlos Rogers and Fred Smoot
Backups: Macklin, Springs, Jimoh
