You are not reading carefully. Both sides on this debate are using the very same words uttered by Portis in slightly different subtle and not-so-subtle ways in an attempt to give that very advice to HIM or to try to shut up the other ones here. :wink:

As uncomfortable at it may be to all of us, the cat is out of the bag. No poster in this board has control over what the media will do (and they will). If I was Portis' agent, I would be thinking either SPIN right now, or lay rrrrrreeeeallly LOW for a good while. My choice would be the second option unless the issue grows beyond a carefully chosen level (by the agent and his public relations staff).

Portis knew this would be coming when he said it, which is why I think Samuels laughed as CP started to talk.

It was a felony before Clinton said anything and it wasn't the top thread anywhere other than Falcon boards. Now it's a national debate. SHould it be sure, would it have been without his conments... no it would have been a investagation that would have went away.

IMO CP chose his words and didn't say much while saying alot.
He didn't say dog-fighting was OK he said it's been around for awhile. He said It was Vick's business. If Vick is guilty of this Vick will answer for it. I don't think Vick invented dog-fighting so it's not something new.

I think he was trying to get a rise out of someone, and he went throught the hole untouched to the goal line. :wink:

Let's hope you're right. We'll likely know soon enough, as I guarantee there's some ambitious young sports reporter with a brand new "gotcha" stick running around rural Covington and Jones counties in MS, digging hard.

When it comes to what gibbs4president said i agree wholeheartedly. But what i'm not sure has been mentioned on this board is the cultural appeal dog/cockfighting has in the south. Now this is in no way meant to give an excuse for the alleged action of vick or portis' reply. The fact remains that the NFL is national and even global entertainment. As entertainers and highly paid ones at that these athletes should stop and think about the current cultural situation, both in america as it pertains to animal violence , and the NFL as it comes to trangressions against the law. This boils down to the same topic we talk about so often when it deals with athletes who have had a rough upbringing. That you have to 'stay hood' or retain 'street cred' by any means necessary. I'm sorry but if im from the 'hood' and make a better life for myself i'm damn sure not going to jeapordize that by hanging with the same fools i grew up with. You could call me a 'sell out' all you want but i doubt i would hear you from my mansion. Bottom line is michael vick and to a lesser extent clinton portis need to get some common sense

ESPN has had someone they are paying to be in the area where Vick's house (ex house?) is located and "digging up information" for them to air, as is their right - these athletes that think they are being unfairly scrutinized are in for a surprise - this new code of conduct is going to be Goodell's intro and he seems to be planning on making these rules stick and the athletes had better start minding their manners or their teams are going to be without their presence on the field.

I am really surprised at the 2 incidents this weekend involving guys hitting women :shock:

and 1 of them stating that he was trying to hit a guy who ducked :shock:

- this guy should be kicked out for a few games by the NFL and then the rest of the season by his team because you should not have anyone that stupid on your team :lol:

This is not his first time either!

MEMO to all NFL players - if you think that what you are doing is stupid, it probably is and you will get caught. If you are a player in the NFL and you want to be "noticed" you will be carefully scrutinized because you are public property - if you do not like it, find another job :wink:

Like RiC was saying - if you do not want the attention then you better do something about it because we live in a world where almost everyone has a phone that can take pictures and is probably not "seeing things" the same way as you do.

Answer this question. Have you ever ate meat before? If so then you were part of a process of killing an animal. When the farmer viciously slaughtered a cow or cut the head off of a pig, hung em up with its blood dripping, sold em off commercially you finalized the deal and digested this same mammal. If you do not eat meat then good for you but best believe you are not without sin. Let the man above judge the man.

There's no question that animals are killed in an extremely cruel manner for the consumption of humans. While there's no debating that, the food is still eaten and serves a purpose. Sure... and how is it anymore inappropriate than CP saying that in so many words... Vick should be able to do with his property what he wants... CP has an opinion and so do I. If he gets hurt I'll cheer it like he (not saying he has been to one) or any other moron would cheer on a dog being tore apart for sport. If CP is stupid enough not to at least keep his mouth shut no matter how he feels, then let him get hurt. It would just be karma. I just don't care about the man anymore.

Portis is a major jokester. He cracks jokes in every interview. How do we know that Portis wasn't just joking around and the journalist simply misrepresented what and how Portis said what he said. Did anyone see this interview on TV, or was it just written in a paper? My point is, Portis could have been laughing the whole time and the journalist just left that part out on purpose for a better story.

I would have to think that if Portis was actually serious about this and was an advocate of dog fighting, this story would've been plastered all over the news in every town, city and state by now. It hasn't, so I would take those comments with a grain of salt, especially knowing that Portis likes to joke around.

I just saw what Portis said on T.V. this morning and I don't think that it got misrepresented.

There are no charges.
The topic is sensitive.
The timing of the comment during the offseason makes it a target.

Having been a diehard Redskins fan for four decades, Portis coming out with a lame defense for Vick, was incredibly stupid. The Redskins PR Department is well aware he stepped on it here. There is not much in the court of public opinion, that incenses people more than animal cruelty. Portis needs to get in reverse in a hurry or the only thing he's going to dress as this year is a goat. CP has just alienated a whole bunch of his fans. Vicks done for the most part, and if connected any further his career is over, he'll be booed out of every road game.

This a quote from what Portis said right? ----> "I don't know if he was fighting dogs or not, but it's his property, it's his dog," Portis told WAVY-TV. "If that's what he wants to do, do it."

Sounds to me like he's condoning it... "if that's what he wants to do, do it" so he does deserve scorn and if karma or whatever else other-worldly beliefs people believe in decides to punish him, I won't be upset.

For all of you who earlier downplayed the repercussions of Vicks situation, and CP chiming in, Take notes, I've been in PR for fourty years, public opinion will crucify anyone who even remotely endorses anyone affiliated with animal cruelty, and righly so. This is a sick group of people. The Skins PR department has to be losing it. Being a fourty year Skins fan, I can't quite believe it. Granted he's a showman but he blew it big time here. This was not a "charade" interview, he unfourtunatly exposed his mindset. Along the way he lost me and thousands of others. He just lost 90% of his fan base, the other 10% aren't worth mentioning. There are about 1,800 players in the NFL. Vicks escapades have been going on for months, and our own CP has to step into no mans land, everybody else steered clear? If he survives this, and Vick won't, maybe his next drees up should include a muzzle.

Ok, I finally got a chance to watch the video. I didn't know the interview was on the news, so thanks for the link.

After watching it, my personal belief is that was just Portis being Portis. But, the fact remains that we don't really know if he was at all serious, just kidding around or if he really condones dog fighting.

After thinking about it, I don't really care.

It wasn't Portis who held the dog fights and Portis hasn't broken any laws. He simply made an off the cuff remark that I happen to think was just Portis having some fun, in his own way. But that's my opinion and I can't prove anything one way or another. That said... I simply don't care. It's not like I'm going to tell my children to get their morals and values from an athlete in an interview on TV.

All I'm concerned with is if he will be healthy this year and if he can produce like I know he can. If he stays healthy, racks up huge amounts of yards, scores a load of TD's, and helps our team produce wins and a run at the playoffs, I really don't care what he believes in. As long as he is a member of the Redskins and helps us win games, he can believe in aliens for all I care. Clinton's value to me, and the team for that matter, exists in his legs, not in his head. They aren't paying him to be an intellectual or a leader of morals or values. They pay him huge amounts of cash because he can run fast, juke's people out of their shoes and scores lots of TD's. That's all I care about. As long as he does that, he can believe in whatever he likes, as far as I'm concerned.

The NFL Network just released a statement from Portis regarding the recent interview. They directly quoted Portis saying he wanted to make it perfectly clear that he does not take part in dog fighting and doesn't condone dog fighting in any way.

That pretty much clears it up for me and is what I thought all along. Hopefully this thread will now die a quick and silent death. But in the absence of other football news this time of year, I'm sure some will continue to beat this dead horse until it cries for mercey. :roll:

The players just need to understand what the new code of conduct for the NFL is all about and abide by the rules - there is a certain element among todays players who do not seem to be getting the message and hopefully they will create opportunities for some other players who do want to abide by the rules. This is not a matter of free speech or legal determination, this is a matter of the NFL's code of conduct - if you want in, then follow the rules, if not, get out of the way so we can get some people in that will.
