Blaylock to Participate In Rookie Camp

Running back Derrick Blaylock, a six-year NFL veteran previously with the New York Jets, is taking part in the Redskins' three-day Rookie Camp on a tryout basis.
Blaylock, 5-10 and 200 pounds, began his career as a fifth-round draft pick by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2001. He played for associate head coach-offense Al Saunders in Kansas City.

Blaylock, 27, had his best NFL season in 2004, playing in 12 games with five starts. He logged 539 rushing yards on 118 carries, and scored eight touchdowns. He also caught 25 passes for 246 yards and one touchdown in Saunders' offense.

In 2005, Blaylock joined the Jets, but saw limited action the last two seasons. He was released on Feb. 28, 2007.

In six seasons, Blaylock has played in 51 games, with eight starts. He has compiled 820 rushing yards on 198 carries, a 4.1 yards-per-carry average, and scored 10 touchdowns. As a receiver, Blaylock has grabbed 53 passes for 520 yards and two TDs.

The Redskins have also invited three other NFL veterans to try out for the club: running back Ran Carthon, tight end Zach Hilton and kicker Kurt Smith.

Carthon, a second-year player who has had NFL stints with the Indianapolis Colts, Detroit Lions and Seattle Seahawks, is the son of former New York Giants fullback Maurice Carthon.

Ran Carthon is listed at 5-11 and 215 pounds. He has played in nine NFL games, logged 16 carries for 22 yards and two touchdowns.

Hilton is a four-year NFL veteran who saw extensive playing time with the New Orleans Saints in 2005. In 15 games, he recorded 35 catches for 396 yards and one touchdown. Hilton, listed at 6-7 and 262 pounds, was with the New York Jets last season.

Smith, a first-year kicker, has had NFL stints with the Seattle Seahawks and New Orleans Saints. He is listed at 6-0 and 182 pounds.

well, it is true we are stacked at the running back position, however, I think Gibbs is just trying to see what is out there. Think about it, if one of our running backs gets injured, we need to have a back up plan if we want to stay competitive. In this league, you have to be ready for all scenerios during the season.

These guys are pounders and I think Gibbs is looking for that guy that can make you miss a tackle...dont take me wrong, I love Cartwright and Sellers, but they do are better at other things...

Marcus Mason signs free-agent deal with Washington Redskins

Former Penguin Marcus Mason will take his hard running and quick cuts to the Washington Redskins crowded backfield after he signs a rookie free-agent contract this week.

Former Youngstown State All-America tailback Marcus Mason has accepted a free-agent deal with the Washington Redskins, the organization announced on Monday.

Mason, who rushed for a school-record 1,847 yards in 12 games as a senior, becomes the first Penguin to sign a contract with the Redskins since Quentin Lowry in 1981. Mason averaged a school-record 153.9 yards rushing per game and scored 23 touchdowns as the program reached the NCAA playoff semifinals for the first time since 1999.

After transferring from Illinois prior to the 2005 campaign, Mason had a memorable two-year career with the Guins. In his two seasons, he played in 21 games rushing for 2,739 yards on 478 carries. He had 31 touchdowns and set a school record with a 95-yard touchdown run at Western Illinois in 2006.

He was a first-team All-America selection by The Associated Press, the Sports Network, the Walter Camp Foundation and the American Football Coaches Association. He was named the 2006 Gateway Offensive Player of the Year and set a school record with 10 100-yard rushing games during the '06 campaign, including six straight at one point.

Washington's backfield is currently one of the most talented in the NFL. Clinton Portis, Ladell Betts, Rock Cartwright and Kerry Carter are all listed as running backs for Washington.

It marks the second straight year the Penguins have had a free-agent signee.

Last year, wide receiver Kyle Smith signed a contract with the Minnesota Vikings. After being released last year, Smith signed a contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in January and is currently a member of the Hamburg Sea Devils in NFL Europa.

As far as Blaylock goes, JLC posted on his blog that it seems like a positive chance we may sign him to compete in camp.

Taylor Sele to become Redskin

Taylor Sele approached the NFL Draft with cautious optimistism. The former Boston College wide receiver and standout special teams player didn’t put up major numbers at the Atlantic Coast Conference school - just 27 receptions for 296 yards with an average of 10.9 per catch - but registered eye-popping times in the 40-yard-dash and vertical leap at the school’s Pro Day, wowing several scouts in attendance.

Although he wasn’t selected over the weekend, as the end of the seventh and final round neared, a half dozen teams started dialing up his agent, Harry Sherr, expressing interest in the 6-foot, 197-pound speed demon. Sele settled on the Washington Redskins, who offered him a three-year contract with a small signing bonus.

“I’m very, very excited,” the Richmond Hill native and former Queens Falcon said. “It seems to be a great opportunity and it’s a situation where I can go in and compete - utilize my skills.”

The Redskins only had five draft selections and signed just 10 rookie free agents - with just one wide receiver other than Sele of all their college players - so there is obviously an opening for him to make the opening-day roster.

i think if blaylock makes the roster it'll be as a kick return guy and maybe even a wideout

Blaylock can play, he's ripped and he pass blocks which is really what gibbs looks for first.
