I think that CB is a position where you need to have a strong ego. Stay with Rogers and if he consistently makes mistakes then you have to make a change. I have to go with Rogers though.

IMO, Rogers owns that spot until he really screws up and looses it. I don't expect that to happen though. But that doesn't mean Smoot won't be on the field a lot this year. Williams has several nickel and dime packages and likes to use them. Also, we don't yet know what will happen with Springs; will he be cut, traded, moved to safety or staying where he already is. Bottom line, our secondary is starting to shape up for next season.

Ok, I respect your opinion but I dont think Rogers can really play in this defense. When he has to play 10 yards back on a 3rd a 5 , I cant see how he can have ego because its obvious GW cant trust him. I have been to many games the last few years and I have watched him get beat , time and time again. When I saw Smoot, I didnt see that. I know Smoot is older now but he knows how to play CB in the NFL.

If Rogers is allowed to bump on third downs. Then I would go with Rogers.

If he has to play ten yards back every third down then I dont want him in.

Rogers is a physical corner and we need to let him bump the recievers and reroute them. That is his strength. He has overall speed just needs to bump the recievers real good to reroute them and use his physicality.

If he has to play ten yards off then I want Smoot in there.

Our injuries last year had this team doing things that they wouldn't normally do. GW would have allowed Rogers to play tight had we have had a better secondary. GW was worried about giving up the big play. We lacked continuity and GW didn't trust the players that we had. Thats why I think we brought back Stotemier (?) and Smoot. We will be fine but I think that we have to allow Rogers the opportunity to play with a complete defense before we take his job from him.

Or if we had a D-line that could put preasure on the QB!

Ok, I can see where you are coming from but they did the same thing in '05 with him.

He was a rookie then. I'm not trying to sit back and make excuses for him but all of them are correct. A players 3rd year traditionally has been their breakout year. We will see what he's made of.

Most importantly, I am a "best man for the job." If Carlos can't get it done on the field, then take him off. I'm sure he understands that.

No one knows the status of Springs... Is he our Safety? Trading bait? or Starting Corner? Or injured roster space? Either way Carlos and Smoot will be on the field a lot together

There are a ton of rumors going on about Springs. I think that he will stay with us but with his father just having the surgery last month. I think he is working on that as well as training in AZ on his rehab. If I were Gibbs, I'd say get better and we will talk about your contract later. Washington just needs to give him an extension instead of asking for him to reduce his salary. He would go down as the dumbest player ever.

I'd vote for Rogers over Smoot, at least at first. Maybe over time he'd earn that starting role, but he shouldn't be handed it. Let them battle for it.

I would have to say start Carlos...He is way more physical and I believe his third year will be his best thus far. He had a decent first year before regressing last year. Another year in a GW defense can't hurt and plus we have a waaaaaaay more talented backfield with a healthy Shawn Springs, Smoot back in the fold and our returning safeties (Omar and Preston) and now with the addition of Macklin at cornerback...whom I like alot. :D

I'd like to see Carlos start, because I'd like to see him have a breakout year this year. If he plays like a high first round pick this year, then the corner position will be much improved, especially with Smoot and Macklin added for depth. If Rogers doesn't step up, then I'd be fine with Smoot taking the job.

I'm assuming here that Springs will stay, but I suspect that will be determined by what the Redskins want to do on draft day, rather than by our cornerback situation.

I vote to let the coaches do what they are paid to do. Gibbs and Williams have far more experience than I with this. I'd hate to think of poor Greg Williams forced to use the lesser player because we made him.

Rogers all the way. No one looked good on defense last year. Meanwhile Smoot lost his starting job to a rookie in Minn. who had a solid D-line. We're all hoping Smoot can regain some of his old form by coming back here but I think Carlos has more potential than Smoot ever did, even in his best years here. Hopefully, we'll get both in top form, but Rogers didn't win the Thorpe award by playing 10 steps deep, that was a coaching thing.

Smoot will start this year. He will replace either Springs or Rogers but he will earn a starting role. Smoot excels in this system and he will prove it to the coaches once more.

I like Smoot winning the the number two position as CB. He can cover and has great hands. This guy is always in position to pick off a ball and return it for a TD. Something we didn't have last year. Competition in training camp should be fun at CB.

You hit the real answer, whoever wins it in training camp should start. I hope Rogers, he's younger and I hope he bounces back from a tough sophomore year. But if Smoot beats him out, he should start.

Regardless, they will both play all the time anyway.

We've seen Smoot play alongside Springs. He can play. We've seen Rogers play...he can't, yet.

So...unless Smoot has completely disintegrated, or unless Rogers has turned into D Green, it would not surprise me to see Rogers at nickel and Smoot out front every play.

If Springs doesn't take a pay cut, Smoot and Rogers will start, and I am just fine with that. I am much more worried about the front four than the back four.

Hi, RiC,

If could take 10 or 15 years off a player. Green was the best CB ever once he learned the position...first few years he depended on superior speed. Still tje only real player other than Bob Hayes to run with the Olympic team.

Oh, the players I'd add. Lachey and Jacoby. Jeff Bostic. Russ Grimm, even with his worn out knees. Wilbur Marshall and Monte C, Charles ("the") Mann to show he DL how to play. Reaching back, Dave Butz, who "never got moved anyplace he didn't want to go"...the DT who routinely took on two blockers, and flattened them both...

And, the king of WR's, the missing piece, Art Monk, my Hall of Famer. Even Peter King (from my town, coached girls softball against him...a decent guy...knew he'd learn)

Oh, to control time!!!
