3-4 Defense?

Post by rustedrootdown »

This is simply a suggestion. Obviously this won’t happen but it would make sense if it did. IF we did get Lance Briggs for the original terms (just a swap of first rounder), it would make sense to switch to a 3-4 base defense. The scenario would go like this. We move Golston to DE and Griffin to DE. This would move Andre Carter out to linebacker like he played in San Francisco. We would then move Marcus Washington to inside linebacker next to London Fletcher and Lance would start on the outside. We would have adequate depth with Rocky and Lemar backing up and Rocky could be groomed to take over one of the spots when one of the starters contract expired. The CB's would be Springs and Smoot and the FS would be Taylor. As far as our first round pick we could use it on one of the SS in the draft (either the Miami guy or the Tech guy). This would leave only Nose Tackle open and I'm sure we could find a serviceable player to occupy that spot for the short term (Jason Fisk?). Any way it would look like this:

DE Golston
DT Fisk/rookie
DE Griffin
LLB Carter
MLB Washington
MLB Fletcher
RLB Briggs
CB Springs
FS Taylor
SS Rookie/Prioleau
CB Smoot

Regardless what do you all think?

My suggested lineup for the 4-3 would be to draft a DE and sign a DT (Ian Scott would be a fantastic pickup) for the rotation and start Prioleau

DE Rookie
DT (Scott)/(Golston)
DT Griffin
DE Carter
LLB Washington
MLB Fletcher
RLB Marshal
CB Springs
SS Prioleau
FS Taylor
CB Smoot

Anyway what do you all think? Hopefully :?: will have a decent defense this year cause last year sucked.

If we get briggs it gives us the freedom to do alot of different things. Wouldn't be surprised to see some 3-4, I wish we could have Briggs and Alan Branch but that'll never happen.

I like the idea of incorporating some 3-4 if that deal went down

But the importance of the nose tackle is huge in that scheme, it couldn't just be a bum off the street, if we wanted the 3-4 to be good, we would need a stud at NT.
On the eighth day God created Sean Taylor- and he was good.

any of you G. Williams historians know if Greg has run a 3-4? And how easy is it for a coach to go with player personnel strengths as opposed to a choaching phylosophy?

We should incorporate some 3-4 formations. I like some 4-6 formations as well.

Either way. Our Dline has been long in the tooth for some time now.

Hey, while we're at it, let's run a 3-3-5 stack too, that'll work.

Just kidding, but I'm pretty sure Williams wouldn't be open to changing anything in the defense away from the 4-3. I thought about the 3-4 too, but that requires a whole different mindset and an attacking, very physical group of linebackers. I'm not sure if that would help the defense very much, but it's interesting to think about.

More importantly, the 3-4 requires 2 thick DEs and a really stout NT. We really don't have anyone who could play 3-4 DE (maybe Griffin could and maybe Renaldo Wynn?) and we certainly don't have a NT.

how come not a lot of NFC teams play the 3-4 while there are a lot in the AFC that do?

GW would not very likely embrace a switch to 3-4. he is a Buddy Ryan, 46 disciple who likes the have alot of people on the line of scrimmage. Daniels and Wynn would be decent 3-4 ends but we don't have anyone who can play a two-gap NT. Without that it is like having a meatless sandwich.

In addition, Carter came here partly because he felt he was a 4-3 end more than a 3-4 LB. Now if drafted Alan Branch instead of pissing the #6 away on Briggs, mixing in some 3-4 might be possible.

DE Daniels/Wynn
NT Branch
DE C. Griff/Carter
OLB McIntosh/Carter
MLB Fletcher
MLB Marshall
OLB Washington

Is the 40 yr. old Ted Washington still floating around somewhere?
Build through the draft!
