Support the d-line

Post by SkinsHead56 »

Ok now I've read posts saying our d-line is the weak link on the team at this point. Others say we need to draft d-line.
Here is my take....
First we draft Sean Taylor thus making our Secondary a death trap.
We have the mid field covers by WR eating, RB stomping Linebackers.
Our D-line just has to make sure no one runs on us. I think in that regard, we have what we need, a bunch of run stopping d-linemen.
So we don't have a speed rusher (we blitz).
If you stop the run the only other choice is to pass.

The dline is the weak link. What happens if one of our tackles goes down? The key to defense is the dline. Look at any good d and they have an above average dline. They may just have average corners but it doesnt matter cuz the qb doesnt have time to throw. We have had good secondaries for years but our d has stunk because of the line. Look at the impact of Daryl Gardner. If we dont draft a defensive tackle in the first round it will come back to haunt this team. I like Taylor a lot but the need is on the dline.

kkryan - All godd points but how was New Englands D-line last year? How did they apply QB pressure? How many picks did Ty Law have against the Colts? Not trying to be a smart a--just a rebuttle.

The patriots dline last year was as good as they come. Willie McGinest didn't even start for them. Ted Washington is one of the best run stuffing interior lineman in the game. If you don't know about Richard Seymour he was a top 5 pick a few years ago and is a superstar in the making. Ty Warren was New England's top draft pick last year at number 13 overall and didn't start. So, pretty much there dline was stacked.

All Good points again, but my view is that most of the QB pressure NE had was from the LB position.
Now I know our guys are not commodities like Washington or Seymore but if they can stop the run we should be fine.
J-Trotter is a sandwich away form being a d-lineman himself.

I still think we need a pure pass rusher on the dline even if we plan on getting most of our pass rush from the outside. Last year we used that philosophy and Armstead led the team with 6.5 sacks and Bruce led the line with 5. That is awful. We need a guy a la Richard Seymour who can get double digit sacks on his own. Every winning team needs a guy like this and currently we don't have a guy on the roster who can do this for us.

I agree with that as well.
But the facts are we are not going to get a Seymore, Kris Jenkins, or D. Freeney in the draft this year. There areen't those types of guys available.
Let's take Taylor and see what we can get on d-line next year.

I'm not sure about any of the dlineman in this years draft either, but my opinion has been already made about the dline we currently have as far as pass rushing goes. I know Wynn and Daniels are good run stuffers and Griffin and Haley/Noble are also good in this area, however they can't get adequete pressure by themselves. I guess it just depends on how comfortable Gregg Williams is with blitzing a ton and whether or not he feels he can use Washington and Arrington as DE in passing downs.

I agree. I know LaVar does not like to get down on the line but he had 11 sacks when he did. Last year was a big waste because of the d-scheme. I think Greg Williams will do enough with the guys we have to create the pressure. I'm all for upgrading the d-line with a true pass rusher, but not at the expense of letting a impact player like Taylor could be pass by.

True. Plus, with Taylor back there it may be easier for GW to send LaVar and co. after the qb. Its a tough call for Gibbs and the management.

NE plays a 3-4 anyway, the edge rushers are supposed to put on the pressure.

Our line last year couldn't stop the run or pressure the passer. I like our signings but I still don't think we can stop the run. It will be better, but we need more depth.

actually NE played a 4-3 until Seymour got hurt.

I would respectfully disagree. Our defense as a whole dropped measurably when we lost Wilkinson and Gardener. Didn't it? Did Champ and Smoot and the rest of the secondary have a harder time this year than last?

Without the line pushing the pocket and demanding special attention, LBs don't get into the QB. As an ex LB I can tell you that if the DT in front of you isn't good, the OL will eat you up on a blitz. It takes too long off the ends if the line isn't demanding attention cause they don't have to worry about four beefy guys up the middle.

Guys, I am telling you - if we don't go with a pass rushing end or a beefy tackle that can make a huge difference we are going to have problems. We have two out of four holes filled and Wynn is a good enough run stopper. Upshaw is ok, but not the powerhouse that say a Berry would have been.

If no one gets to the QB - the QBs are going to look good against Taylor or ANYONE back there just like Champ got burnt so bad last year.
