I really like this guy, and I think Williams is going to turn him into a great player just like he did with Antonio Pierce. I think he'll be a full time starter this year. What do you guys think?
Golston made an impact in his rookie season, starting 12-of-16 games at defensive tackle for the Redskins. On April 30, 2006, the Redskins selected Golston from the University of Georgia with the 196th pick overall (sixth round) of the 2006 NFL Draft. He is regarded as a defensive tackle with great size and ability.
Golston is an athletic defensive tackle with the quick burst off the ball to consistently shoot the gap and get backfield penetration -- he pressures quarterbacks and disrupts runs in the backfield regularly. He has the playing strength to stack the point of attack vs. one-on-one run blocks and can clog the middle to disrupt inside runs and can jolt offensive linemen and drive them backwards into the quarterback's lap. He does a good job of getting inside the "Reach" block, keeps his blocker on his back/shoulder and can chase down running backs in pursuit. He has the quick feet/hands and agility to move quickly side-to-side to avoid blockers on the move and to adjust and make tackles well in space.
He should be even better with a year under his belt. I think we need to start searching for a successor for Griffin. It'd be great to have a young defensive line that can grow together and build some chemistry.
I wouldnt mind seeing him paired next to Griffin for a year or 2.. i think Griffin will bounce back and have a really strong year for us but we do need to start looking for his successor .. maybe in next years draft in my opnion
I forgot to mention that I think he will end up being our diamond in the rough. We also drafted Montgomery at the same time. I wonder what his progress is.
Golston started the season great, but I think he lost steam late in the year. He was getting pushed around pretty good against the Rams, part of the defensive collapse in the final games.
Not uncommon for rookies to hit a wall late, so perhaps with full offseason he'll be a bit more stout against the run.
Most of the good teams have a rotation on the d-line to keep guys fresh. Griffen, Golston, and Salavea are a good start but would like to see Montgomery step it up, or perhaps get another veterans/draft pick in this year. Perhaps they can parlay one of those late round picks into D-line depth...

I take exception with your belief that GW turned Pierce into a great player.
All GW did was let him start. The fact is he smade the team as an undrafted FA under marty Schottenheimer's regime, and kept makiung the team no matter how many different coaches we brought in.
While I credit GW for letting him play, you have to remember that marty S. ocne said that Pierce was the SMARTEST DEFENSIVE PLAYER he had ever coahced and that it was only a matter of time.
Personally, i dont think much of GW turning anyone into greatness; he arrogantly believes that his system is mroe important than his players' abilities. Witness what happened to the defense when they allwoed pierce and Smoot to leave.
You can credit whomever you like, but the fact is that Pierce became a good player during Williams' tenure.
Moving on, this thread is about Golston and our DT situation.
One other point I'd like to make. I always read around here that we should take the players we already have and groom them into solid contributors. Well, we drafted two DT's last year, Golston and Montgomery. And yet some of these same people say we should use our only 1st day, top ten pick, on a DT. Maybe Williams sees some potential in Golston and Montgomery, wants to mold them, as many of you think we should do, therefore eliminating the urgent need to draft another DT. Just a thought.
Golston did slump later in the year, but thats not that surprising. Most rookies do. Golston was a great player at Georgia when he was able to play, but that was rarely. The guy is constantly nicked and banged up. Hopefully this is something that he is over. Most scouts didn't doubt this guys physical gifts, they just noted that he didn't get much playing time in college, and thus was raw and injury prone. If he hadn't had those injuries in college he would have likely been a third rounder.
Perhaps its just something with me? But I think that your DT's are your most important positions on the defense....perhaps behind the CB. Monty and Goldy are raw....projects really....especially Monty. Golston is a good player who will likely become a good rotation guy. But, he is too injury prone to rely on.
Griffin and Salavea regressed last year....epsecially Joe. All in all, our DT's are average at best. If you have two beastly DT's in the middle of the line then you pretty much guarantee that at least one of the DE's will be one on one......plus you won't give up those runs up the middle anymore.

I have a sirius radio and one of the hosts was talking about trading golston and the #6 pick in exchange for briggs and the #31 pick. I really like Golston and think it would be a bad move to get rid of him.
Golston made a $247,445 bonus as part of the NFL's Performance Based Pay system. Golston received the 7th highest bonus for last season. Dawan Landry, Raven safety drafted in the 5th round got the highest bonus at over $350k.
The PBP program established a fund from NFL revenues to supplement the salaries of guys whose playing time in a given season is disproportionate to their base salary compensation for the year. Those who benefit the most are primarily young players earning the minimum base salary. This money does not count against the cap.
So we can draft a late round contributor every once in a while? Maybe Danny and Vinny should stop giving away draft picks and give the scouting and coaching staff a chance to find a few more? MAybe with experience they will get better at working together to find late round gems! Novel idea isn't it?
I was very impressed with this young mans performance. He did wear down as the season went on and he did wear down in games.
He made a sure start to his NFL career and as he gains some more experience he will only improve.

Golston will become a great player. We need more guys like him.
The DL needs youth and it needs size (Andre Carter is a lightweight). How do you win in the NFC East? By controlling the line of scrimmage. I cannot believe how many people are interested in bringing Lance Briggs to Washington. Forget it! We don't need better linebackers. Linebackers only look good when the DL is already getting the job done on its own. When the DL can't get the job done, relying on linebackers to take up the slack is a finesse strategy.
We need youth and depth in the front four. That has been the most neglected part of the defense for years. If I had my way I would trade the #6 pick for two lower picks and I would spend both picks on defensive linemen.
