Key West

Post by Justice Hog »

I'm thinking about possibly heading down to Key West for a long-weekend in April. I've never been but a lot of friends, knowing I'm so laid back, said I would love it down there.

So, I'll ask y'all.

If/when I go, where should I stay? What should I do? Etc.

Hey bro. Key west is great. You can stay anywhere, it's very small. It's a place to unwind and just be laid back. There's a famous poets house you can visit, I always forget his name. There's the southern most tip of the country there and an island where people go to chill and be very very care free. When you get there you will see plenty of booths and information places that can direct you around. It's not a place where you have to worry about planning a million things ahead of time. Oh yeah, great bars there.

Bahia Honda is my favorite beach...its about 45 minutes north. Sunset festival......

I spent some time down there, but I was with a friend who was a local and unfortunately I don't remember any of the places that we went.

I was thinking of Ernest Hemmingway.
People may not remember exactly what you did
or what you said....

~BUT~
they will ALWAYS remember how you made them feel.

Ernest Hemmingway was a poet? Oh, WAIT, that explains some of the things I saw on the walls in that restroom...

There is a ton of things to do and places to stay in the Keys, and specifically Key West. It all depends on what you're in to and how much you want to spend.

You will probably have to fly to Miami and grab an "island hopper" to Key West. Or, you could rent a car and drive to Key West. It is about a 3 1/2 to 4 hour drive, but it's a really cool drive. All these small islands and keys are connected by bridges and there is the "7 mile bridge", which is very cool. There are also lots of cool places to stay on the different islands. Check out Hawks Cay Resort. I think it's located about half way to Key West, on Duck Key. They have a lagoon there and you can swim with the dolphins.

On Key West itself, there are many cool places to stay, from a bed-n-breakfast type place, to a resort atmosphere, and everything in between. Just depends on your preference. There are many historical inns, or you could rent a villa or a cottage on the beach. Check out the Westin Resort; Sunset Key Cottages - very cool place to rent a cottage on the beach. I've stayed there and also the Casa Marina Resort and Beach Club.

Duvall Street is where all the action is. Loaded with nice restaurants and bars and is always a party atmosphere, especially this time of year. If you're like me, when I'm on vacation, I like to always be near a Tiki bar and the adult beverages. :D The weather is beautiful and the girls wear very little. Sloppy Joe's is a popular restaurant and bar with good food. Try the stone crabs and the conch, very good. Stay away from the lobster, though. Warm water lobster is not near as good as cold water Maine lobster. It's hard to find spiced shrimp down here, so be specific when ordering. Some places have no clue what Old Bay Spice is.

Lots of sport activities as well. You can always rent some jet skis or a boat. There are also some cool sunset dinner cruises you can take. Or they have some casino boats if you like to gamble. If you're in to history or stuff like that, there are some tours of Hemmingways place, ghost tours and stuff like that. Then again, sometimes I like to just sit on the beach and sip on a Margarita.

I'll send you a PM regarding a few other tips. I'm sure you and your fiancé will have an excellent time. Enjoy your trip and share some photos when you get back.
