So Rocky and Marshall are backups now? I thought Rocky was playing well and was going to start? Our linebackers looked like the strongest unit on the defense, if not the team.

This sucks. #31 had better get to the f'n QB.

Have you seen the reports about this years d-line class being very deep? Have you looked at who might be available? Why do you think that this 1st round pick is worthless?

I remember getting Dexter Manley in the 5th round and he was pretty good at getting to the QB

Quoting myself, because I am pretentious:

So according to this, Love Smith agrees with me:

The Bears placed their franchise player tag on Briggs to limit his mobility on the free agent market, and Coach Lovie Smith said Wednesday he doesn't expect Briggs to be traded.

"We franchised Lance," Smith said. "He's one of our players. That's all there is."

Asked if he expects Briggs to be with the Bears next season, Smith said, "Yes, I do."

So maybe, MAYBE we should all sit back and wait until something actually happens.

Now remember, this is nothing more than mere speculation:

Skins and Bears Trade Update

By John Keim

Posted Mar 28, 2007

The bears don't want to make this trade. At least, not right now they don't.

The whole situation makes it look like the agent orchestrated it.

If Chicago decides they want to trade, they might force the skins to sweeten the deal.

On a side note, Roger McIntosh's agent would push for him to be included in the deal, most likely. I know the bears at least like him enough...

Now that changes things a bit. I've been a fan of Rocky for a while now. I live near Miami and I watched him in college. He has been great so far on special teams, specifically punt coverage. When he finally made it on the field late last season, I made a point to specifically watch him on defense. He seemed to look lost most of the time. There has always been a question mark regarding his mental capacity or his intelligence. I think we all were a bit perplexed as to why he didn't start earlier. There were several reports last year that said Rocky was extremely slow to pick up the defense, and I believe that is why Williams didn't start him until he was forced to, due to Washington's injury. If I had to choose between them, I'd take Briggs in a heartbeat. But we'll see what happens.

Joe Gibbs stated yesterday that the trade for Briggs is not iminent. In addition, he says they are currently in discussions with other teams about trading UP from #6.

My friend who is a Philly fan was talking about how the Eagles gave up thier best DT in Darwin Walker to get a stud LB in Takeo Spikes. Seems Philly thinks LB's are pretty important too.

Was Darwin Walker really thier best DT? Thats not saying much if its true.....maybe they would like to trade up to #6 to pick up Alan Branch?

 Agreed, but that's what he said. He really liked Walker and hated to see him go. I don't really know much about him.

while i like many of you have been against making a move for someone like briggs the more i think about it the more it does make sense.. Briggs is a 26 year old 2 time probowl weakside linebacker which is a need of ours .. now i know everyone is going to say we gave up 3 picks for rocky and we have marshall moving back out there so we are set.. but are we? as much as we would all love to be true insiders with the team they know more than any of us and clearly they arent impressed with what we have on the outside.. rocky might not be looking like what we were thinking he could be and marshall took a beating on the inside these past 2 years and is getting older why not bring in a briggs.. and everyone says the salary and how we will be overpaying.. well picking at the 6 spot and paying 15 mill gauranteed for a UNPROVEN player makes no sense .. and we are talking about maybe even moving up losing more draft picks for next year and paying even more for an UNPROVEN player.. my only concern is chemistry which i do admit could be a problem and would worry me but if that didnt become an issue then why not pair briggs with fletcher and washington thats a pretty nasty linebackers corp .. with lamar and rocky adding depth and at 31 we could get a DE/DT or G .. look at the bears picking up there rookie DE in the 3rd round last year.. what did he have 12 sacks? so to say the ONLY way we will get a good DE is in the top 10 is ridiculous

The bears are preparing a counter offer I think they will try and keep the 31st overall, effectively screwing us.

The only way I would remotely be happy with this is if we get the 31st pick, too. If they take that pick off the table, I hope the Skins just flip them the bird and send them on their way.

I think that these guys (the Bears) need to understand that the offer was made and if that's not acceptable we're out of here and on to another tangent - we do not really need this guy otherwise we (the Danny) would "win" this battle - this is basically take it or leave it - IMO we are not going to "lose" another player or change the offer on this.

I really think that they (the Bears) will get something else done with Briggs before they let him go just to move up 25 spots in the draft - I also do not know who they could pick at that spot that would make up for losing this guy.
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

I totally agree, which is why if they take the deal as is I'm all for it. The fact is that while I'd like a Briggs quality player available on the D line or the secondary for that price, there isn't one available.

When you have a chance for a player like that, you take it and build from there. You don't win a Superbowl just by picking the best player at each position, you get some special players and build around them. Rocky and Marshall are good depth. Maybe even OK starters. And they my not prevent us from getting to a Super Bowl, but they aren't the guys who are going to get us there either.

Briggs is a mouthy malcontent who would sit out a whole season rather than take a 35 mil deal. Meaning, we would have to pay him more than that, PLUS lose our 6th pick, for the priviledge  of having his mouth in Washington.

Add to that the fact that he has racked up sacks while being surrounded by a very talented defense. He isn't going to get 12 or more sacks as a Redskin. In fact, I would predict that if by some chance we included Rocky in the Briggs trade, Rocky would have a better season in Chicago than Briggs would have here, IMO.

Totally agree! I also think that you are right about the Bears not taking the deal, They will be a better team with Briggs than with whoever they can get at 6! I really think they are going to have to do something better for him or lose his playing for them as he did in 2006.

I also think (and hope) that we will find another means to making our D better this season than by adding this very good player.

Yes, I agree with what you are saying I would love to have Briggs but Rocky hasn’t had the chance to prove whether he could be that type player. Plus, givin up 2 second rd picks we need to give him that change or it was all for nothin.

To be honest, I think Briggs is gone. He has burnt his bridges with the front office and the fans are now turning on him too which, I guess, is exactly the scenario he is hoping for. The NFL is a funny ol' game, however, but I would be ASTONISHED if Briggs and the Bears got a deal done.
It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom – for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.
