Johnson to Bears - done

According to profootballtalk.com, the Johnson to Chicago deal is done. Also, he reports on some grumbling among players about the intensity of the workouts.

I'm old enough to remember the first Gibbs teams (actually, I'm old enough to remember Otto Graham coaching the Skins). One thing Gibbs concentrated on was conditioning. His teams historically had few injuries and held up well for the entire season because they worked so hard at conditioning. These guys better get used to it. Coach Gibbs expects it.

Yeah - and they report that the deal is for a 5th round pick in 2005 draft. Jake won`t be happy!

I'm surprised by the trade. But at least they're getting value in return for losing a quality player. No way Rock can play H-back, he's too small, and Chamberlin apparently came in over-weight. Maybe this opens the door to draft Winslow?

As far as the grumbling - the only place that mentioned that was profootballtalk.com - so I don't think we should give it too much weight. Besides, that's what Gibbs wants to find out - who's going to go 100% and who's going to tank.

If a guys going to grumble in mini-camp, what's he going to do in the 4th quarter, when he's hurting, and Dallas is driving for the tying score? Gibbs gets rid of fools and quitters - just ask Trotter.

Wow, Winslow. Maybe so. I definetly don't think Cartwright can play the H-back postion.

Mike Sellars, on the other hand, is interesting. He has great size (6'3'' 260), but played in Canada last season. The interesting part is the season he had last year:

48 catches, 481 yards, 2 touchdowns
86 carries, 427 yards, 7 touchdowns

As great as that season is for an H-back, it was still in Canada.

I'm not as opposed to drafting Winslow as I once was, but would still rather have Sean Taylor or defensive line help. If Gibbs wants to go into the season with Sellars as the H-back, it probably means he likes what he saw in camp...

h-back = half back

rock is a full back and a bit undersized but he's still pretty good in my opinion.

H-back is not a halfback. They are two different postiions.

H-back is kind of a FB/TE hybrid. You don't hear the term very often because many teams don't really use the position. Some of the better H-backs today are Frank Wycheck and Jim Kleinsasser...

Anyone have an idea how the signing bonus works for Johnson's contract. Since we matched NO offer sheet and it was creativily written, I thought you could trade the contract but not the signing bonus????

Nevermind, I just read the article, that said his contract had NO Signing bonus. That is strange in today's day of Free Agency not to include a signing bonus.

i think it was a roster bonus, which counts against the cap immediately (as in against the 2004 cap), as opposed to a signing bonus which is spread out over the length of the contract. this is one of the tactics that the saints used to try to dissuade the skins from matching.

As the great Dusty Rhodes (rasslin'figure) would say, "Bidness is Bidness". Out with the old, in with the new. Way to make up for all the draft picks lost. "Joe Knows" is the key to coping with the changes being made by the Skins. I feel more comfortable hearing about the changes made this season, as opposed to the queaziness I felt the past two seasons knowing that our players (see Davis, Stephen) were shipped out, out of stupidity (can i say that here?), to become great players (again, see Davis, Stephen) elsewhere. C'mon Joe, let's get this thing started!!!!

It's always tough when a solid player leaves, but unlike Brad and Big Country, Bryan Johnson ain't leaving without the B&G getting something in return...that was worth matching the Saints' offer.

(In the old "personnel structure", Johnson would be a Saint now...)

BJ's not old. He's only been in the league for 4 years. I think he would have thrived with Gibbs.
