Pace of signings to accelerate: Thursday was Market Correction Day in what has been a wild week of free agency. The prices of players are coming down dramatically, which should only hasten the pace of signings. The safety market is now the hottest, but it's going to be hard for many to top the $5 million a year deal given by the 49ers to Eagles safety Michael Lewis. Expect action to pick up at running back now that Jones and McGahee have been moved in trades. The Bills are looking at Chris Brown, Dominic Rhodes and Corey Dillon as possible signings. In the first week of free agency, more than 50 players have moved to different teams and at least 40 have re-signed. More than 30 percent of the unrestricted market is gone.
Signings have yet to put dent in salary cap: Despite the big contracts given to players, the 32 teams haven't put much of a dent into the salary cap pool. Free agency started with $472 million of salary cap room. Thanks to terminated contracts of high-priced players, the cap room is still slightly less than $400 million. The Browns still have more than $25 million of cap room. The Packers have $21 million. The Titans have $26 million. After starting with a league-high $37 million, the 49ers have found four potential defensive starters, added wide receiver Ashlie Lelie and matched the six-year contract of punter Andy Lee, who signed an offer sheet with the Steelers. They still have $15 million of room.
