Dre Bly wants to be a Skin

Great, another chance for the Broncos to give us the short end of the stick in another trade. Why do we always bend over and ask Denver to give it to us in these trades. I would be happy if the Skins and Broncos never traded anything ever again. This even includes saying hello, because Denver would find a way of getting the better of that as well.

I don't understand this attitude at all, but everyone seems to share it...

The Redskins have ALL the leverage. A top pick Denver covets... and a Broncos player who has loudly proclaimed to amyone who will listen that he badly wishes to play for Washington.

The trades that have been proposed in the news are blue ribbon rip offs in FAVOR of the Redskins... some people are just being silly about the 6th overall pick IMO, especially since I don't think either Gaines Adams or Branch would help right away.

I would love to see this trade happen because, we would have a full draft and addition pick. Okoye is a great player and is only 19. We would be able to address all I needs plus add dept. Springs is a great corner and I would hate to see him go but this is too good to pass up. This trade will help the Redskins in many ways, DE, DT, and OG. This trade will give the Redskins 3 potential starters. I know the people are going to bring up the cap hit for Springs but the Redskins will make the trade if it’s possible.

I love this trade...we don't lose anyone, although I'd be happy to send Springs with the 6th pick...if we get Bly, their 1st rounder and "our" 3rd rounder back..then I absolutely say go for it!

OK lets start:
When Vinny first got here he trade either 1 or 2 6th round picks to the Broncos for a player or two that they woul have cut and they didn't make our team.

Next came the lop sided Bailey fo Portis deal. I don't care what either player has done since then, you don't make that trade straight up if your the Skins let alone thrown in a 2nd round pick.

The Campbel trade was fair.

Come on, you can't seriously consider the Duckett deal even remotely fair. I mean he might still cost us our 08 4th in addition to our 3rd this year. This for a guy that Atlanta just wanted off their team. The only team that made out in that trade was Denver. Duckett wasn't a need, he wasn't used, and Lelie is now a 49er.

Mark my words, if we make a trade for Bly with Denver it will only get done if the Broncos can sit back and laugh at us again. They must love hearing Vinny's voice (or whomever). They cover the receiver and laugh, "Hey, its those suckers in DC again! Lets see if we can get them to give us Batts, Springs, the #6 pick, and next years first for Bly". The sick thing is, the Skins would consider it.

NFL Network's Adam Shefter reports that the Broncos have asked for Ladell Betts in exchange for Dre' Bly.

The Broncos are also reportedly talking to the Saints. Other reports say Denver is interested in Washington's first-round pick. The news about Betts is interesting considering Denver just paid big money to Travis Henry. But it's a typical Mike Shanahan move; He's not afraid to acquire an extra quality running back.

That would leave us with 4 starting corners, 1 RB, A huge cap hit cap Betts, another huge cap hit when we cut Springs, and another huge cap hit when we give Bly his Nate Clements like contract. AND Bly isn't even as good as Springs! He may not be as good as Rogers or Smoot.

Wow, people are putting WAY too high a price on Betts... Bly for Betts would be larceny on our part... we'd be bending Denver over.

We would trade or cut Springs (which would actually save us money, why else would it be mentioned as a possible, nay probably offseason move?) and bring in even more pieces to the puzzle.

I don't understand the attachment to Betts and the hatred of Bly. Bly is a great cornerback who would just OWN with Smoot and Rogers.

We could have 4 CBs like Bailey and it will mean nothing without really upgrading the front group. If you have a great line and decent LBs we can get by with who we have back there and maybe 1 other decent CB - does not have to be all world to be decent - almost anyone with reasonable talent will look great in the secondary with the QB lying on the ground.

I still think Gibbs really wants both Betts and Portis in B&G next year. I also hope Springs is here next year as I believe he will be a good influence on our secondary.

Club Creates Cap Room by Restructuring Additional Contracts

The Washington Redskins, after netting primary free agent targets linebacker London Fletcher and cornerback Fred Smoot, are poised to acquire cornerback Dre' Bly from the Denver Broncos.

The Redskins were $8.4 million under the cap yesterday before re-signing reserve cornerback Ade Jimoh, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

The Redskins completed another sweeping series of contract restructurings to create the cap room, according to sources -- only two new contracts have been announced by the team thus far -- and remain interested in Bly. Washington attempted to get him from Detroit before he was traded to the Broncos.

The Redskins offered Bly a lucrative contract extension during trade talks, numerous NFL sources said, while Denver has been unwilling to compensate him beyond the $4.2 million base salary he has for 2007.

Bly has told numerous past and present teammates of his desire to play for Washington, and several NFL sources believe the Broncos are willing to part with him. Denver was scheduled to have free agent cornerback David Macklin visit yesterday.

The Broncos and Redskins have been discussing trade possibilities since before the combine last month, according to sources with knowledge of the situation, with Denver coveting Washington's sixth overall pick and the Redskins looking to trade down and reacquire a second- and third- round pick, which were dealt away (the Broncos have the Redskins' third-round selection from the T.J. Duckett trade).

Denver tried to get running back Ladell Betts in the deal, according to sources, but Coach Joe Gibbs has been intent on pairing Betts and Clinton Portis in the backfield next season.

The Redskins were offering veteran cornerback Shawn Springs for Bly, but those talks stalled when Washington asked for additional cap relief to offset Spring's $7.5 million cap charge and Denver declined, sources said. Last month the Broncos made a proposal involving middle linebacker Al Wilson, their first-round pick (21st overall), a third-round pick and perhaps a second-round pick to land Washington's sixth-overall pick, according to a source, but the Redskins preferred Fletcher, who was their prime objective in free agency.

Should Denver be willing to essentially replace Wilson with Bly in trade talks, the potential for a deal could be high. Also, the Broncos could still make a play for Springs, whom Washington asked to take a $2 million pay cut, or the Redskins could attempt to trade Springs for draft picks if they acquired Bly.

Given Washington's cap standing, and the fact the team could create an addition $4 million in space by cutting injured kicker John Hall and reserve defensive lineman Renaldo Wynn, absorbing Spring's cap charge would not be prohibitive.

The Redskins began creating cap room by restructuring tackle Jon Jansen's deal last month, giving him a $10 million signing bonus but slashing his 2007 base salary. Backup quarterback Mark Brunell also agreed to a very cap-friendly new contract, with no guaranteed money. Over the weekend the club also announced the extension of guard Randy Thomas's contract, and, sources said, in the process lowered his 2007 cap charge from $5.5 million to $3.3 million. Thomas's deal is nearly identical to Jansen's, according to a source with knowledge of the contract, including a $10 million bonus. Thomas, whose previous contract was voidable after 2007, thus making him eligible for unrestricted free agency next year, is now signed through 2011, the source said.

Also, the Redskins reworked the contracts of Portis and star wide receiver Santana Moss, converting large portions of their 2007 base salaries to bonuses, which become guaranteed but can also be prorated for cap purposes. The players lose no money in the transaction, and Portis's cap figure went from $7.1 million to $4 million, according to sources, while Moss's charge was lowered from $5 million to $3.2 million.

Owner Daniel Snyder has been willing to make a strong financial commitment every year to frontload contracts and provide additional bonuses to players in order to lower cap charges, which in turn keeps the team aggressive in the trade and free agent market.

Bly, the #21(1st rd.), #56 (2nd rd.) would be nice but then they'd have to throw in #86 for taking Dre off their hands. Then we can trade Springs to Detroit for even more picks

This would screw the perception of the Redskins front office up for a lot of you but I like it.

does anyone know what a trade for bly would require? i know alot of you are opposed to making such a move but in bly you get a 29 year old corner who has a knack for creating turnovers something we need desperatly and while i love springs and everything hes done he is 31 and has been slowed by injuries his ENTIRE career not just here in washington and if we could get a younger more durable corner i feel we should .. its not only about next year its about the future.. id rather get 3 or 4 years from bly then one more from springs

And that's the pickle we are in right now.... Here's something else to think about too. What's the real reason why Bly wants to come here? Money??? If that is the case, it would not make business sense for us to cut loose Springs because of money, only to take on Bly who's probably gonna want more. Then we are back in the same boat we were in with Springs and the cap.
