i wouldnt give up on rogers just yet.. he is entering his 3rd year and it takes alot of players a couple years to adjust to the nfl level .. look at taylor for instance his first couple of years had there moments but he was in no means pro bowl caliber yet and now after his 3rd year hes still progessing and just made his 1st pro bowl
does anyone know what a trade for bly would require? i know alot of you are opposed to making such a move but in bly you get a 29 year old corner who has a knack for creating turnovers something we need desperatly and while i love springs and everything hes done he is 31 and has been slowed by injuries his ENTIRE career not just here in washington and if we could get a younger more durable corner i feel we should .. its not only about next year its about the future.. id rather get 3 or 4 years from bly then one more from springs

I say resolve the springs issue and stick with what we got. Don't give up that pick unless it is to trade down to get more picks.

This is the same team that sent multiple picks away for TJ Duckett just so the Eagles wouldn't land him... and they already had Ladell Betts... it's hard to settle down and be a Redskins fan at the same time.

Unless the Redskins no something about Springs injury status that we don't, I really hope they find a way to keep him on the roster this year. If Springs forces their hand, I do not want them to deal with Denver unless it is totally lopsided towards the skins to make up for how they have burned us the last few years. Let the Redskins get back, their 1st rounder from this year, our 3rd rounder back from this year, our 4th rounder for next year (if we owe it to Denver from Duckett trade), their second rounder from next year, Bly and cash. Since I don't post often, please note I am obviously not being serious in the trade demands above because that would be rediculous from Denver's stanpoint. It just feels like that kind of trade would be the only way to get back into balance with Denver the way they have burned as for draft picks the last few years.

I'm going to ask this again, does antone know if we still owe the Broncos our 08 4th rounder? From what I heard about the deal, we shouldn't, but I keep hearing that we still owe it.
I hope we keep Springs and don't EVER get scre..., I mean make another trade with the Broncos. Let the Broncos deal with that over hyped, thinks he's under paided, Bly.

Best post in the entire thread.
1. DON'T go to sleep on Rogers. He is ten times better than some of you are giving him credit for. Is he a pro bowler yet? Of course not. But he will get comfortable and will be a good corner in this league. I watched his whole college career and he was a monster at Auburn. "The 2004 Jim Thorpe Award winner as the nation's top defensive back, Rogers finished his collegiate career appearing in 50 games with 44 starts. He holds the school's career-record with 40 pass deflections. Rogers also accounted for 182 tackles (134 solo), seven interceptions and two fumble recoveries. Rogers garnered a first-team All-American selection and first-team All-SEC honors." He, like many who come into this league, need a couple of years to adjust.
2. I like Springs too. But the fact that he has missed so many games, is so injury prone, and with a cap hit of something like $7M+ for this year, makes him less attractive. If he were to restructure or split time at safety, then keep him. But even if he stays, he'll most likely be gone next year. Why not get someone who can learn the system and be a productive contributor for several years. No one is saying that Bly is the best corner in the game, just that he may have a little more to offer than what we currently have, from all perspectives.
Redskins Notes: Denver cornerback Dre Bly, who the Redskins attempted to acquire last week and who has told several people he wants to play for Washington, could become available again. The Broncos, who already have three quality cornerbacks, have a free agent visit set up with corner David Macklin, according to reports, and should they sign him it could be a precursor to a Bly trade. The Redskins are seeking additional picks in this draft and are interested in trading down from the sixth overall pick, while the Broncos could entertain moving up. . . .

I just wonder, if we keep Springs at his current salary and at his current position, what would everyone say if he ended up getting hurt again, (how many years in a row has he missed games due to injury?) misses half the season like last year, and our pass defense ends up ranked at the bottom again? Would you say then that it was a good idea to pass on Bly?
One of the things teams do that we as fans seldom do, is look at who will be available next year at that particular position in free agency or the draft. Maybe Bly is better choice than who might be available next year.

Also it's not a definite that Bly will be successful here. Smoot was good here but sucked in Minny. Bly was good wherever he was and could suck here. Or he could be a misfit for this defense. What we have in Springs is a proven good. His injuries can be more easily managed than how Bly may or may not perform.
I say try to keep Springs and keep our draft picks which Gibbs seems interested in doing. Next year, lets see who we could possibly draft.
We don't need to address EVERY position in one off season. We need to do our best without breaking the bank and mortgaging the future away and slowly build this team up for an eventually SB appearance two years from now. If we get there sooner, so be it. But this win now BS is over.

I nominate Chris for associate assistant General Manager of the Washington Redskins!
Daniel Snyder has defined incompetence, failure and greed to true Washington Redskins fans for over a decade and a half. Stay away from football operations !!!
Bly wants out because Denver does not want to redo his contract. If you were a FA where would you want to go to have your contract redone??
This whole this just takes me back to Champ... we should have paid him!!

He did not want to be a Redskin so why pay him? For fun, since Champ left, here are the rankings for each team's passing defense:
2004:
WAS: 7th DEN: 6th
2005:
WAS: 10th DEN: 29th
2006:
WAS: 23rd DEN: 21st

Manage injuries? I don't understand. If Springs gets injured, he's out. How do you manage that? Tell him not to play too hard so he doesn't hurt himself? As for Bly, whether or not he fits or performs IS something that can be managed, in the form of proper coaching.

Agreed on not needing to fill every position in one year. But if Bly were to turn out to be a better fit and doesn't miss games due to injuries, wouldn't that be considered "building a team" for a future SB run?
But this win now BS is over.
Well, I understand what your trying to say, but I for one, WANT to win now, rather than waiting a couple of more years. This 'waiting' crap is getting old!

Breaking the bank or mortgaging the future hasn't happened yet and is subjective. Springs himself was a free agent we brought in, and paid him a healthy salary to boot. No one is complaining about that. Everyone, including me, likes him and wants to keep him. Why couldn't that happen for Bly?

Good point. One guy alone can't make or break your team's successfulness.

Can you imagine the number with Champ in GW scheme?

This Bly to the Skins stuff still looks pretty hot. The Skins and Broncos are still talking and we may be able to solidify the pass defense while adding to our total picks at the same time.
I don't see that as being a bad move. Dre Bly in Gregg Williams' scheme would be pretty nasty. Add Fred Smoot and Carlos Rogers... and whatever we get for Shawn Springs... we'd be looking good.

More Dre Bly
As I've been writing since Sunday, don't rule out a Dre Bly trade. I continue to hear this cat is pushing to get to DC bigtime, and it seems like the trade talks are still on. The stuff I hear just won't go away and I am beginning to think it is going to happen.
Denver does not want to give Bly an extension, but the Redskins will. I heard today that these trade talks actually stretch back to before the combine and have taken on various forms (including the Springs for Bly proposed swap that the Broncos killed because the Skins wanted cap relief, as reported first on this lil blog Sunday).
So now the Broncos are bringing in corner David Macklin and are open to dealing Bly. And the Broncos have a hardcore interest in Washington's sixth overall pick, numerous league sources have told me, and the Redskins remain very open to dealing it. As I've reported previously, the Redskins are also deadset on trying to get that third-round pick back from Denver they lost in the Duckett deal.
And, trust me, these teams have been talking about swapping draft picks for weeks, I hear on very good authority, and have already had the parameters of several potential deals in place. So, I still think there is a very good chance we see Bly come to DC, along with Denver's first-round pick, and second- and/or third-round pick, plus maybe a conditional late round pick, in exchange for the 6th overall pick.
In that scenario, the Skins would make a big play for the 19-year-old defensive lineman from Louisville, Okoye, to address that need, and get young offensive and defensive linemen with the additional picks (I hear they love this kid by the way). Also, Springs would likely get traded for picks (don't rule out him landing in Detroit, Arizona or even Baltimore) and Bly gets his money in Washington.
And trust me, I am not going to put everything I know out there right now, but the Skins could make this happen cap-wise, with little problem.

Since the Skins don't seem blown away by any of the top prospects in this draft, this might be a great way to improve ourselves in many different areas.
It'd also be a chance to rip off Denver, lol. Denver would probably take Gaines Adams and we could have Okoye who might be just as good.

Great, another chance for the Broncos to give us the short end of the stick in another trade. Why do we always bend over and ask Denver to give it to us in these trades. I would be happy if the Skins and Broncos never traded anything ever again. This even includes saying hello, because Denver would find a way of getting the better of that as well.
