Computer help...

I need to save some work from my computer on disk. What I have to save has the rich text tag (.rtf), and for whatever reason, I can't copy it to a 3.5 .
What am I doing wrong?

What's the file size of the RTF? If it's above 1.4 MB, could it be saved in a less intensive file format? Else, you might try ziping it (winzip could be found for free on the "internets" or try "the google"). Else, it would probably be easiest to email it to someones who has the ability to burn it to a CD.

There's no file any larger than 80 KB, but there are a few of them...say, a dozen. If possible, I'd like to preserve the files as they are, tables and all.

I can burn music CD's. Apparently, all I have on hand are the FujiFilm DVD + R ones for storing pics. When I tried to transfer the files to that, I got a window that said there was a problem with copying. (I'm not being vague. That was the message.)

You can try a few different things.
1. Make sure the "copyright protected" hole is closed on the floppy.
2. Make sure your disk is formatted.
3. Try to save another file to the floppy to see if it works.
4. Try a different floppy.

You didn't give the error message that you received so if those don't work, post your error message. There may be something wrong with your floppy drive. If all else fails, send the file to your work email using your personal email. You can also use your work email (if you can access it from home) to send it to yourself at work.

You could always get yourself a 1GB USB Thumb Drive for less than $50.

THis is the same flash drive I have and it is one of the best out there. VERY FAST, good price and its from a reputable company.

You could check this resource first TC and see if any of it fixes the problem you're having...

One thing that i think is important to remember... if you are GETTING an error... it's usually something small and NOT hardware oriented... when equipment is 'broken' you will usually get NOTHING (not error messages).

Try a new diskette.

Make sure the copy protection on the diskette is off.

If you're trying to save a document directly to a diskette... save the file to your hard drive and then transfer it to the diskette... if you're already trying that... try renaming the file and moving it to another directory and THEN try copying it to diskette.

Having said all of that... thumb drives are great and if you don't ave one... it's $20-25 well spent. I just did a quick search at Circuit City and you can actually pick up a kingston drive for $6 right now (with rebates). it's $19.99 with a mail-in rebate of $14...

Try checking device manager to see if there any yellow exclamation marks next to any of the devices. right click my computer>properties>hardware>device manager. I have had to delete a registry values before because on a machine I was working on, none of the cd drives would work.

I'm going to print all this out and get to work on it.
I wish I were more literate. I couldn't purposefully delete a 'registry value' if my life depended on it.

I am not saying that you deleted a registry value. I am saying that I have had to delete a value before to get a computer's cd drives to work again. If you have the :!:

yellow exclamation points next to your cd/dvd roms, I know the fix for it. It would involve deleting a registry value. Sounds weird but it works and there is a KB # from microsfot but can't rmemeber it at the moment.
