"March 5-- Free Agency Wrap up, so far...
London Fletcher comes to Washington the starter at middle linebacker after signing a free agent deal leaving Buffalo..
Fred Smoot is back signing a deal to be at the very least a nickel corner.. If Shawn Springs returns (more on that in a minute) Smoot will likely be the nickel back but will certainly push Carlos Rogers to be the starter opposite of Springs.. Smoot is extremely well liked in the locker room.. He is still recovering from a car accident he suffered before the Vikings season finale where he broke his jaw...
On Springs: I suspect he will either be traded or released if he refuses to restructure his contract.. His over 7 million in cap charge will limit the movement the Skins can make, but the decision on his future does not have to come until June due to the parameters of his contract.. Joe Gibbs says he expects to have his back and contribute, but I expect that only to be the case if he changes the current structure of his deal..
S Vernon Fox re-signs with the team.. He will be a back-up safety and special teamer..
FB Mike Sellars and G Randy Thomas agreed to contract extensions.. In the case of Thomas, this will help alleviate some cap room..
G Derrick Dockery left for a large guaranteed deal with the Bills.. The team had hoped to re-sign him but with their cap space limited and their payrole high on the other starters it became apparent they wouldn't be able to match..
Former Giants T/G Luke Petitgout visited Redskins Park on Monday.. Should he pass a physical, he will be the likely candidate to replace Dockery if the two sides can come to terms on a deal..
Washington also re-signed G/C Mike Pucillo who became an extra tight end in short yardage packages by the end of the year..
CB Kenny Wright signed a 3 year deal with Cleveland.. The Skins were not interested in retaining him.. CB Ade Jimoh will likely be resigned by the team..
P Derrick Frost received a qualifying offer and as a restricted free agent will likely be reatined as the punter..
K John Hall has yet to be relesed by the team but I suspect he will be before training camp saving the team 1.5 million on their cap.. Shaun Suisham will likely be the kicker next season..
The Newark Star Ledger reported that the Skins and Jets were in trade talks involving Ladell Betts.. I don't suspect the team would trade him unless the deal was overwhelming.. Washington spurned trade offers last year before resigning him to a very friendly cap deal.."
- I thought the jetskins were dangling Vilma but talks broke down. According to BRAM, the talks between us and the jets are still on going. I wonder what they are offering? I would say bye bye betts for some good draft picks. That way we can keep our 6 and draft a stud DE. Thoughts?
MODS - I wanted to just post the article for everyone and threw out the trade situation for giggles. Thats why I didnt combine it with the rest of trade posts. If it gets moved my bad for making more work for u guys...
Trade talks not dead?

Jets have their Back

BEARS TRADE JONES TO JETS
Michael Smith of ESPN.com reports that the Bears have traded running back Thomas Jones to the New York Jets.
Per the report, the Bears also will send their second-round pick (No. 63 overall), and will receive the No. 37 pick in the draft, which the Jets landed via an earlier trade with the Reskins.
Armed with the No. 31 and No. 37 picks, the Bears could be in position to try to move up in round one. Unless they sign a tight end in free agency, don't be surprised if they make a play to move up in order to get Greg Olsen.

I know this is a little off topic, but man did the Jets get a good deal or what. Thomas Jones for what equated to a high third round draft choice (sound familiar). The difference in draft value from #37 to #63 is 254 points or a high third round pick. But the best part is they really didn't give up that pick, they just moved down.
The Skins should learn how to trade this well!
I'm glad that some of the Betts trade talks will go away now.

Wow... melancholy flashbackOverall however, a decent draft. Wonder what we would have been if we would have drafted the Edge?
He was gone, we couldn't have. Beside we had Big Country in the prime of his career. What we gave up for B. Johnson seem like a hell of a lot, I remember thinking that at the time, but the Bailey Saints Bears trade was great.
