My Fellow Redskins....
give me a brief opinion on how it feels to be on the other side of the fence this offseason?
We lost our least best lineman to a team who vastly overpaid.
We signed two serviceable players who make sense for the team and have clear cut roles.
We didn't break the bank.
We took our time and signed what appears to be quality players.
How does it feel to sit back and watch other teams overspend, how does it feel to not be the over spender?

Yeah. Plus, they may not realize it till halfway though the season. You know when their (AA like) FA signee hasn't done nothing.xhadow wrote:We are only a few days into free agency... lets talk about this again when the preseason starts, then lets talk about it.
Just because we haven't spent the money doesn't mean we won't.
I firmly believe the Patriots are the antichrist.

It feels weird. Whether it feels great or not, I prefer to leave until I see how next season pans out. But I can't deny that I'm feeling a bit smug about not signing Davis, and letting Dockery go, and getting two solid players for sensible contracts.
Right now, I have the same feeling that I have every year - this team is not so far away from being a contender. One thing is certain - if we lose next year, we still won't look as utterly stupid as we did this year, after spending all that money with little return.

It feels alright! We haven't thrown away draft picks this year! I know the Broncos still have our private line active, but we haven't used it yet and thats a good thing!
Letting Dockery go for the $50 million contract was bitter sweet! Yes, I'm glad we didn't overpay him, but on the flip side of the coin I wish he was still here!
I'm really glad we didn't sign that guard from Arizona, who was by far the most overated player in free agency. Man, it felt good seeing Jerry Jones make another dumb move!
I'm really glad we didn't outbid the 49ers for Nate Clements! Yes, that guy is really good, but FOR 80 MILLION!?!??!?!? Sorry, he ain't that good!
I just wish we hadn't wasted that 3rd round pick on Duckett. We could really use that pick on a D-lineman, DB, or O-lineman!
Last but not Least, I just don't know about this Smoot thing yet! I guess Gibbs likes the move, so I guess I do to.................But, I just don't trust him! At least not yet! Maybe a few games into the year I will, but after all the things he said when he left and then again on opening day last year.............He's got to earn my trust again! No offense, to all that are happy with this signing. This is the last time you'll here me speak negatively about Smoot; at least until the season starts. He's a Redskin now and I'll try to support him.

Yeah I agree, that trade for Duckett looks pretty stupid. Hopefully they play it smart the rest of the way through... but so far so good...
Truly, I just don't care - it's all about wins and losses to me. It's not like it's my money either way, so I absolutely don't care how much the front office spends or doesn't spend on players. If it results in a significant improvement next season, the moves will have been smart. If we're back to a losing season and another playoff miss, then no one's going to care we didn't break the bank this off-season.
I'm not being critical about the moves so far - I think we've been smart so far, and showed some restraint. I'm just not overly excited yet.

I agree. It ain't over yet. But what I have seen in the first few days of Free Agency, have been good.
I think that our next focus areas should be the draft, replacing Dockery, resolving the Springs issue and bringing the coaches and players together on one page. Decide who is calling all of the plays and take the arrogance of the equation and get back to basic coaching of the talent that we have...

Actually it pretty much does. The players we would bust the bank for, like Nate Clements, are gone now. It really would make no sense and it's not our history to overpay the random players who will come on the market later. So I'm not getting what you are "worried" about.

Who cares how much they pay - just so the payee fits!
The job of a GM, I guess.....
Big hole to fill on the Line now and still glaring spots on the D-line and what to do about Springs.
I loved when the Skins sign players - just too bad they never seem to choose the right ones...

At this time of the year it's impossible to be 100% certain of any moves but there has been a definite step in the right direction, at least I think so.
I've been very critical of the team, I've been extremely disgruntled and irritable. This is probably the first thing I've been happy about since JC started.

You have been critical and at times I've suggested overly so.
But I want to point out the opposite now. To your credit when they do what you wanted them to you are out here singing their praises all over the board. You have integrity, sir.

It was a strange feeling because I've been used to us being a major player in the market for the high profile players. I kept waiting for something to happen, for us to sign someone, but it all played out much slower this year and apparently more purposeful. It looks like we targeted a MLB and CB and got them, and moved on an OG due to the Dock loss. We did not get our first target (Davis) because we were smart ($) and are looking at #2 tagret. Now, we can use our first draft pick on DL or trade for more picks to pick up quality young players. So far, I'd say we are overall a better team than we were before it started, did it with fiscal responsibility, and are in a decent draft position to pick up at least one more quality player.

I'm not trying to come off as overly optismistic, I'm just thankful to see a move in the right direction.

I am still a bit nervous. Dockery was our least best lineman I guess... but games are won up front... and we're also thin on defensive line.
The Redskins have a pretty solid secondary, a good looking LB corps and a brilliant defensive coordinator... but can we really solve the line just with the draft?
And on offense, are we ready to go with no adequate complimentary recievers to Moss or
ey? With a hole in the offensive line?
We still need a lot of work, so let's not order the championship rings just yet.

We don't have our holes filled. If things stay the same, there will be no real improvement. The defense will be no better, regardless of the uprade a MLB. Springs and Daniels are increasingly unlikely contributors and Smoot might be through or average, at best. We're also missing a first rate safety to go with Taylor and are only hoping Rogers will work out. If we fail to find a DE or DT who will make a huge impact, our D will continue to be a liability.
On offense, I feel the loss of Doc with cause a few losses, especially at the beginning of the season.
Conclusion, we've got to pay big bucks for an OG, pick the right Defensive lineman in the draft, and come up with another CB and/or safety to make any real progress. My biggest worry, however, is that Brunell will somehow get himself into the lineup, in which case we're looking at a disaster.

I am serious. Frankly most of the time people either are always critical or if they are not critical they are quiet. I am just trying to give you props for coming out and saying you have been hard on the Skins but they have done well so far. I was surprised you were that positive.
And we agree they did well. I know I get into it with people sometimes, but if I'm not serious I try to be clearer then that. Not that I don't understand you asking.

I agree roybus.
I'd add team chemistry and identifying the strengths of each player and putting each one into packages where they excel and give us the best advantage to win. Example...AA is a good tackler and not a good coverage guy. Put him in a position to tackle and not cover.
Looks like we're being methodical in our approach to FA so far. I like what I see. It gives me hope for a strong season.
