The Gibbs Attitude

I just have to say that you all better get used to seeing people cut for no obvious reasons... Gibbs doesn't outline 'em out in the open, but in listening to the audio archive of the press conference - there was something big he didn't like about Trotter. It was the only time he wasn't bright and cheerful. His voice dropped and he wasn't happy.

The quickest way for any person to get the boot off this team is to be a talker with an attitude about anything other than the team. If they become "me" players, Gibbs isn't going to tolerate that.

Actually he dropped his voice one other time, indicating not being happy in another situation. He did the same thing in reference to Bailey saying "it was obvious we weren't going to solve that here"... but he wasn't happy.

This man doesn't like cursing, slacking, selfishness or bad attitudes.

It reminds me of the guys sitting behind the desk pressing the button and having two big gorilla guys show up (no necks) to escort someone from the building. Gibbs doesn't hesitate to push that button.

Wanna know why we didn't go for certain players? Wanna know why we aren't retaining certain players who do have athleticism? I feel, IMO that this is major reason why. Why did Gibbs want Bryan Johnson back so bad? Once again the reason why - he was good for the team.

I got goosebumps listening to him talk about his two most important things in his Saturday press conference... character and football smarts. He would rather take an undrafted FA after the draft who showed that than a star.

I love it - and all the people who love the big name quality that we have seen in the past - don't count on it for the time that Gibbs is back.

Let the other teams' fans get all obnoxious about why we aren't going to succeed.

Read all the articles and find out why we will. Find out why players like Griffin and Daniels, Arrington and Washington, Springs and Smoot (Springs, if I am right, has always been a negative talker up til now) will reach potentials that they haven't before.

Think about our receivers playing on the same level as average receivers like Clark, Monk and Sanders. Of course those guys didn't end up being average, but they weren't considered marquee names when we started using them. Now Gibbs has the likes of Coles, Gardner, McCants, Jacobs, Russell, Cloman who, realistically have more phyiscal gifts than most of our prior receivers. Too bad Gibbs wasn't here when Westbrook was - he might have been better.

For all of those youngsters for whom Gibbs is just history, for all the other teams fans out there - go ahead and talk, but read those articles coming out of this mini camp and realize that the basics are getting taught and learned, that you have brilliant coaches on both sides of the ball, that average players - even undrafted ones - will play higher than their potential by far for this man. Read them and rejoice (or fear, if you are a hater).

If Lavar saw this man in action and decided 6.5 million wasn't worth leaving the team over (which is, IMO the real reason he is staying)... maybe it will hit you in the forehead what I was writing about right after Gibbs signed. All of the doubters - watch. Just watch. These guys are going to walk through fire to make this man happy. They would march to and tear down the gates of Hell to make him happy - and this is just after a freaking MINI CAMP.

Yeah - go ahead and talk down your nose about the past years in the 90's. We'll be seeing you (or not more likely) at the end of the season. With the unrealized talent that we have, and you know we do, teams better be worried. Really worried

He started out that way. Most teams weren't high on him. I remember articles questioning him. Notice I said they didn't end up that way.

He wasn't a burner. He didn't bring impressive physical skills. He wasn't as strong as Gardner or Cloman. He was out of Syracuse I believe, and that school really wasn't known for producing pros at that time. BUT he turned out better than a lot of top pros around him.

Don't get me wrong - I loved the threesome out there - I was crushed when we had to lose them due to the salary cap. Clark was drafted out of little old James Madison - right up the road from where I live.

Just keep this in mind - they didn't do much in any other system - it was Gibbs that helped them achieve the greatness inside of themselves

That was my whole point - not cutting on them.

Great post SFIR! You are just repeating what I've been saying since Gibbs & Co. have come to town. "Coaching" is one of the biggest additions for this team this year.

With this excellent "coaching" staff, the Skins level of improvement the upcoming season should be dramatic!

I love the articles from people like the skeptical Paul Woody who see the difference ... maybe it is waking up deep memories in his mind from the 80's

I want to see what some of these other skeptics say after reading the stuff coming out of this mini camp

Let me add one person to the list of Redskins haters: Harry Jaffe of the Washingtonian (no relation to Al Jaffe, the Dream Job judge). Jaffe always bashes Washington sports writers about joining the Redskins bandwagon every year. Last year, I think it's reasonable he would bash the writers because the team had no hope last year (except for Kornheiser). Now, he says Gibbs will not save this town. Jaffe mention that the best writer in D.C. is Sally Jenkins (from New York, who stills writes for the WP, but lives in NY) who says that Snyder will screw up the team again. Excuse me, I don't think Ms. Jenkins (to be honest, she's a terrific writer and knows what's she talking about most of time) has ever been to D.C. except two stints in PTI. She has Pastabelly's outlook. Jaffe has no clue about this town except housing and celebrities kissing his rear end. so SHUT UP!!!

I would certainly agree that Trotter was often out of position during his tenure here, but I would never accuse him of being a negative talker. Maybe I have misinterpreted your post, but of all of the personalities on the defense, I can't really recall him being a negative influence. I suspect that salary and overall performance (and I say that with reservation - 129 tackles last year) were contributing factors in him no longer being the comodity that we thought he would be. My $0.02.

I wouldn't say Trotter was a bad guy. he did attend the Joe Gibbs press conference. I think that shows character no matter if he was going to stay the team or not. he was still a Redskin and he showed support for the organization. It was also a classy move that Gibbs discuss to trotter and his agent to seek a trade. This finalizes what the Skins saw on tapes and see that Trotter would not work in the William's system. I hope we trade Trotter to someone who is looking for a MLB. There's the Jets, and the Seahawks. If we can get a low second-middle third rd pick, i just hope we can get Isaac Hilton to have a complete team.

Great post SkinsfaninRoanaoke. One thing I remember from Gibbs' first tenure is that almost no one had much success after leaving the Redskins.

I agree that it doesn't seem like it, but neither you nor I (unless you want to come out and admit you are a Skin and have seen it personally) know what happens in the locker room. You don't know if they tried to renegotiate and he said "Oh, Hell No"

The thing of it is that even if you were a player you wouldn't know what happened behind a closed door in a conference.

I am not saying he was bad, or that he was negative for sure. Just don't know - but speculatively it could have happened that he refused to buy in and help the Skins with his salary numbers... possible... right?

Gibbs will mold this team in his own image and that is a good reflection if you ask me.

Trotter may not have fit the bill from many standpoints but Gibbs is a good guy and let's him off to seek a trade - classy guy all around.

awesome read rich. thats what i,m trying to say to those that say this or they say that about joe gibbs at this point in the game.hell i say get used to it.this man will get what he needs from everyone involved in this organization. and the scary thing about it is it,s just mini camp. hearing players say that they are being worked like it,s gametime well to joe gibbs gametime started when he was signed in early jan.this is what we all have been missing these last 11years.

I appreciate the kudos, but I am just trying to give some of the younger fans a taste of what we all felt back in the first Gibbs era.

I love reading the quotes coming out of the mini camp - the respect, the effort, the remarks about the education...

And not to mention confirmation of what we all suspected was happening the last couple of years...

Williams sounds intense in his interviews too doesn't he? Detailed and intense - sounds aggressive just to listen to him - I wouldn't want to be a QB going up against his defenses

Gibbs brought him around, and turned him into the "Most Productive Receiver Not Voted Into The HOF".

Yep - that was my point Monk wasn't a highly sought after WR in his time, but Gibbs molded him and used his talents the way they were meant to be used...

A wrench might make a handy hammer at times, but it doesn't work that well in comparison - to expect Monk (in the old Gibbs era), Gardner, McCants or Cloman to run streaks successfully against modern NFL players is ludicrous - and Gibbs doesn't do that. SoS didn't learn that you can't use a hammer as a wrench.
