of course the skins will give davis as much or more than DD.
Davis is much more aggressive and has a mean streak to him. Now this Offensive line will start to resemble the Hogs of the Past I hope.
Ponder this LT Samuels, LG Leonard Davis,Center? RG Randy Thomas RT Jansen Damn thats an impressive Line. With Leonard Davis added that would really solidy this Offensive Line. Oh yeah Baby! WHoooo! Farewell Dock thanx for everything.
Goodbye and good luck Derrick. No way was he worth that contract. No hard feelings, and I'm pretty sure that we can get a decent guard for a lot less money than that. Let's just not panic and overpay for a replacement.
i doubt that davis will be here. it is pretty much known that he wants to go home to texas and will probably sign with the cowboys. he is just using washington and new york to get jerry jones into a bidding war and drive his price up.

Would you have been pleased if the Redskins had just given him that contract? For that kind of money, I'd want one of the top three guards in the league, and he's nowhere near that.
True, perhaps they could have signed him before he went into the last year of his contract, but once we reached the offseason without signing him up, it was always a chance that somebody would pay him silly money (which is exactly what the Bills did).
I liked Dockery and thought he had improved through each season, but I don't think he is in the category of a Steve Hutchinson to be getting a 7yr 49 mil deal.
That being said, I don't think Leonard Davis (while having massive size and strength) is the route the team should go in filling that guard spot. The one thing that hampered the team when Dockery was in there was on counter and sweep plays going to his side, he didn't have the mobility and speed to get out in front of the play and blaze a trail for the RB. He made Randy Thomas look like the Flash by comparison.
I don't know all the stats/abilities of the guards out on the free agent market, but I think the team would be better served by finding a guy in the 300-320 lb range with good mobility that could still get good push up in the middle and be solid in pass protection. The hope would be it allows coaches to be able to call those counters and sweeps to both sides and allow the offense to be more effective.
Perhaps that player isn't in free agency currently. Maybe you can find him in the draft.
Two formation shifts, one man in motion, and a counter trey...those were the days...
Scott, you might be the best one to answer this question though. Can Jansen play guard? I had similar thoughts about making a push to re-sign Todd Wade whose main desire is to be a starter and let him be our RT and move Jansen inside to LG. Do that intead. Of course if we can get Leonard Davis at a reasonable (in this years FA climate, anyway), then that would solve the problem of who to plug in at LG.

ArizonaHOG asked earlier in the post about a compensatory draft pick for Doc, and JansenFan replied no, because he was an UFA. But if I'm not mistaken, if you lose an UFA to another team, the league evaluates that and gives compensatory draft picks dependent on the caliber of the player (I believe it has to do with how high they were drafted). And they only give 3rd rounders and down. If another team signs one of your RFA's, they owe you one of their picks. Is that right or did I totally misunderstand how that works?
Finally it looks like Gibbs is winning over Danny and Vinny to not go on spending sprees. Letting Dockery go was a very SMART move. It is easy to get caught up in the emotion of keeping a guy like Dock. But Buffalo way overpaid and you can't bat an eye. You let him go and immediately start calling FA OG's. Just look at this link where Scouts Inc. grades FA OG's. Dock was not even CLOSE to the top two graded OG's who hit the market a few days ago. He graded out at a 65 as opposed to a 75 for Dielman and a 81 for Steinbach. Does that help put it in perspective or what? Steve Hutchinson money for Dockery, who is a nice player to have but not Pro Bowl caliber? No way.
Time to move on. Dielman is still available and likely for less money than Dock. He is a same age as Dock - 26, has same years experience - 4 and here's an excerpt from his scouting report:
He is tough, durable and physical and plays with a lot of toughness and a mean streak. He is the leader of the Chargers' offensive line unit and well respected on and off the field. He possesses a nice combination of size, strength and athletic ability. He is a former defensive lineman and has that type of mentality. He is an aggressive player who comes off the ball hard and does a good job of bringing his feet on base blocks.

At 6'4", 310 lbs., Dielman would be the guy I was talking about. But I haven't heard anything about the team making any overtures to him, it's all been about Leonard Davis. I do respect the level of patience that they've shown thusfar in free agency, a more prudent approach is what I was hoping to see.

I don't think he'll be available for less money than Dockery got. I can see the Redskins looking at second tier free agents to fill this spot. Who knows, we could even see something happen in the draft, if they trade down in round one.
But they might just wait until after the draft to fill the position.
I think Dielman will be available for less money for a couple of reasons. 1. He converted from D-line to O-line and so is not as polished as Dockery who has played O-line for 10 years. 2. He was an undrafted FA. It seems that these FA's coming off their first contract often get more money if they were drafted high. There are lots of egotistical coaches out there who think they can turn that under-achieving 1st rounder into a star. Just look at Leonard Davis. He was drafted 2nd overall and hasn't done much in his career but teams are still mesmerized by his size and draft status. 3. Two or three guards have been signed already. Teams who will pay starting guard money are dropping like flies. We may get lucky.
I want Dielman. He is the type of player we should be going after, not Davis, Smoot etc. Here's another excerpt on Dielman's scouting report:
In the run game, he comes off the ball hard. He is explosive on contact. He does a very good job of working his combo blocks. He slides off blocks well and can get to the second level. He does an excellent job of pulling as the weakside guard on power sets. He is quick through the hole and does a good job of adjusting his track on the move. Even though he has improved a great deal, Dielman still has upside because of the position switch. He is still learning the position and getting better all the time.
I share the same sentiments many of you guys share on this.
He is now WAY overpaid. I'm glad it wasn't us that did it. It's not the Redskins fault he left. They made him their No. 1 priority this offseason.
Dockery came into his own in 2006, but not $49 million worth. It's a darn shame. Him and Chris Samuels were tight. It would have been nice to keep this same line together for several more years.
