Saints release WR Joe Horn Posted: Thursday March 1, 2007 4:40PM; Updated: Thursday March 1, 2007 4:40PM
NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- The New Orleans Saints released four-time Pro Bowl receiver Joe Horn on Thursday, saying Horn asked to be let go after the Saints asked him to take a pay cut.
"Joe really wanted to see where his value is around the league for his services," general manager Mickey Loomis said. "With as much as Joe has meant to the Saints and to New Orleans, we don't want to impede his desire to do so, and we have kept the door open for him to return to our team."
Horn, who was the most frequent spokesman for the players during their Katrina-enforced exile during the 2005 season, had caught 523 passes for 7,622 yards and scored a team-record 50 touchdowns since coming to New Orleans as a free agent in 2000. He ranks second in club history in catches and yardage, and he is the team's all-time leader in 100-yard receiving games with 27.
Horn, who turned 35 in January, missed the Saints' last four regular season games in 2006 and both playoff games because of a groin injury.
He had 37 catches for 679 yards and four touchdowns during the regular season.

wow, this is just disrespectful. he was the only Saint i could think of a couple years back. but hey, maybe he'll re-sign with them for less $
16 Ounce Bottle Of Coke: $2
3 Bags Of Chips: $8
40" Plasma Screen TV: $2000
Watching the Cowgirls get beaten in Dallas with 2 4th Quarter TD passes to Santana Moss: Priceless
I know we don't have a lot of luck with older FA's but Horn could be a nice fit. He's more physical than any of our current WR's and he knows he's not the top dog any more... he might fit in with our group.

There's already not enough balls to go around. How quickly we forget that Brandon Lloyd was an un-tapped resource last season, and that Antwan Randle El would show up in the box-score once every few games.
This team has three legitimate receivers and at the least will enter the season with two more than capable tailbacks. Adding another skill-position guy into the mix at this point wouldn't do anybody on this offense any good.

Something tells me the Iggles will land this guy. He's a proven talent, and looks to be a pretty good locker room guy. He probably won't come cheap, but the Iggles always have the cap room to make a signing like this.
If that's the case, he will feel the "Wrath of Sean" twice a year on Sundays.

A proven WR will get lots of calls this offseason. I'd imagine the Chargers and Patriots might also be interested, not to mention the Falcons, and maybe Panthers.

Okay, lemme see.
35 yo Missed a lot of games last year due to injury.
Yeah.....he'll command a lot in the open market in free agency!
Not!
There's a difference between commanding a lot and getting signed. I mean look, the Patriots were practically pulling guys out of the stands to play WR last season. And it seems the whole Falcons WR corps had a chronic case of butterfingers as well. Should Horn decide to continue playing, I have no doubt he'll be able to find a team, as long as he doesn't get delusional about his worth.

Untapped resource? How about "improvised routes" and "bad attitude"?
If we cut Lloyd I wouldn't bat an eyelash.

This team has one of the worst receiving cores in the league. Period. I am too lazy to compare at this point but i would say they are 24th or worst if i was to rank them.
I disagree. Lloyd has obviously underachieved, but Randle El has been fine and he's been a great punter returner.
Santana Moss was hurt and wasn't himself last year for a portion of the season, and Chris ey is one of the better tight ends in the league.
Betts is also a great 3rd down back and he catches a lot of passes.
You can't have the best of everything in the league. Campbell is really improving, and the offensive line has been great. With Portis and Betts, the running game will be solid and the WR and receiving corps is fine.
At this point, consistency is better than trying to sign a bunch of pieces that won't work...

Lloyd had more yards and a higher yard per catch average on fewer receptions.

That may be true, but when you're watching the games it's different than what's on paper. Randle El made a much bigger difference in the overall game than Lloyd ever did. He also didn't cause problems off the field and clash with the coach.
Also, Randle El was the slot receiver and was on the field less than Lloyd was, so I'm sure he'd get more passes thrown his way.
My point isn't who is better, it's who affects the game more.

I think from a WR standpoint neither were spectacular. ARE gets more air time cus he returns also, so thats a bit unfair. Lloyd has his issues but both guys have room to improve. The offense as a whole is moving forward, they'll let it up next year. Especially Lloyd.
I am an admitted Lloyd apologist, but I don't think Lloyd ever got the looks he should have. I was in the stadium for every home game, and I thought Lloyd was open down field a lot. Brunell finally started going to him the game before he was benched, and he and Campbell never got into a rhythm.
Obviously, doing the B. Lloyd show, I talked to the guy quite a bit, and a lot of things that were said about him were blown out of proportion.

He really excites me moreso than any of the other WR's. I truly hope that he makes himself readily available to JC throughout the offseason. JF did he mention his intention in regards to that to you?

The point of having receivers is too make a lot of receptions for a lot of yards, especially in third down situations. Not to be a special teams threat while not doing much on the field. This team lacks a true possession WR and it ends up having to be moss when he should be running fly's every down. Look at the giants and cowboys in our own division. Glenn is able to run free because of T.O. and Crayton. The giants have Burress AND Toomer (not to mention shockey but im not getting into TE's). A possession receiver is needed for the skins to be a consistent passing threat.
gibbs4president wrote:Ok then your opinion is tainted. Enough said.
You say tainted, I say informed. I don't have to rely on what quotes are used without knowing the question or circumstances around it. I get to hear the whole story first-hand.
CLL, in talking with Lloyd, he made it very clear from the day that they announced the QB change that with a young QB, the players around him need to step up and ease his transition. He told me that his intention is to work with Campbell this off-season to build that chemistry. He also said that it was pretty difficult to do that at the end of last season because the focus was so run-heavy to ease Campbell into the starters role, that they didn't spend as much time on it as they really needed to.

He says tainted, you say informed...I say Lloyd can show me on Sundays that it's not just words.
I have never really heard why he was benched (if he was benched) or why he was such a nonfactor in the last 1/3 of the season...but he's got at least another year to show that he was not a bad investment.
