You are correct! I have seen guys shooting them at the gun range. They are very powerful and put a lot of guns to shame.
It's very comforting to me to know that you boys who are rooting for Armegeddon are out there playing with your guns.

Glad I could comfort you (not in a gay way) .
Who said I am rooting for Armageddon? I am rooting for peace and that will only happen when Christ returns. War just so happens to between right now and peace.

Yes, I greatly prefer the liberal way.
- You have the feel good position of being against guns.
- You have a contradiction that you oppose punishing criminals, their crimes were really society's fault. If we owe them anything it's an apology for letting them down and making them feel they had no choice but to commit a crime.
- The Constitution would be an issue, but as a liberal you ignore that. The Constitution is a hammer when you agree with it and toilet paper when you don't.
- So you create gun laws that are devastating to honest citizens (like not being able to get a job) while being a slap on the wrist for criminals.
- And the result, the reality is criminals are armed and they can safely go about their business as they can be pretty sure their victims aren't.
Typical liberal position, well intentioned and poorly conceived. But hey, you feel good about your intentions so everything really turned out OK.

I still don't get it. Why guns? Now, I know that you might answer with "why cricket?" or "why tea and scones?", but I just don't get it.
I assume that it's not legal to walk around the streets with these guns? If not, then you're not protecting yourselves from street robbery. So, are there many burglars that carry guns?
Just where can you go with your guns (I appreciate that may vary from state to state), and who are you protecting yourselves from? Would you like teachers to be carrying guns to protect your kids from these lunatics that seem to strike in your schools (or shopping malls) on a frighteningly regular basis?
Again, I'm not picking a fight with the NRA here, but I'm a long way from understanding the gun culture. It has to be simpler than just because the constitution says you can?
On a lighter note, if I was able to have a gun, you can bet there wouldn't be any cats in our neighbourhood.

I'll try my best to answer your questions. You can walk around the streets with a gun (with certain restricitons) as long as you have a concealed weapons permit. You cannot take them in stores (to my knowledge) but you know it is close by if you ever need it. I don't care if burglars carry or don't carry guns. If someone breaks into your house, they are there for a bad reason. Would you rather it be Gun vs no gun robber or hand to hand combat? At 2am, I am going to take the gun.
Teachers with guns is a no-no. They are there to teach, not to protect. At the school I work at, they have a SRO (School Resource Officer, she is an actual police officer) and 2 security guards. The SRO has a gun but the security guards don't.
I like having a gun because it is a good stress relief, good home protection and it's just something I enjoy. I am not out to hurt anybody with it except if someone tries to harm me. I don't want to shoot anyone or any animals. I like powerful things. Guns, cars, fast computers, etc...
So why not guns? People kill people. If Joe kills a person with a hammer, Joe still killed that person, not the hammer. Same goes for a gun. It's just an easier way of doing it.

I mentioned before I have spent several years working in Europe and got that question all the time. The other thing Europeans always asked about was the death penalty.I don't know that you're going to get an answer that you really get, but some factors as a brain dump:
Culturally, Americans came from a more gun centric background. Largely caused by Europeans. Though not just Europeans. We were here though with the English, French, Spanish and so forth fighting for the US and were in endless battle for territory. Also, as we moved west hunting was a major source of food.
Culturally also we are a lot more heterogeneous which leads to a lot more conflict. Brits traditionally were more the same and didn't view other Brits as a threat without a gun.
Our criminals have been more violent. We have had Italian and other organized crime and mafias that have been a lot more violent. We have the idiotic drug war with such major profits and ironically the more successful we are in fighting drugs the more the profit and the more violent criminals are to get it.
You have had major punishment for possession of guns. The US has not and so guns have been embraced by a lot more criminals. Our crimes devistate law abiding citizens but are a slap on the wrist to a criminal who already has a record.
Then with Government, we were formed in guns overthrowing the Brits and we never trusted any government, including our own totally and consider guns to be a way of maintaining our political freedom.
With long gun ownership we have a lot of attachment to shooting as a sport Brits never developed.
We object to government taking our guns as we want to restrict what our government can do.
But since our criminals have such wide access to guns it is very difficult to change that and the fact is those areas with the most guns in citizens hands have the least crime.
We have more crime and our law enforcement does not protect us, it follows up on crime and do a medicre to poor job of that. If your home is broken into by an armed intruder, the best the cops will do it try to find out who did it and punish them. They are not likely to stop anything.
Hope that helps.

For me, it's just a hobby. Sure, I want to go into law enforcement some day, but right now, I'm just at the range to enjoy the weather and improve my marksmanship.
Honestly, it's really as simple as "Why does anyone do anything?" It's more fun than golf IMO, and a hell of a lot less frustrating.
As far as protection goes though, I keep my gun locked up to where it wouldn't even be practical for me to use it to defend against break ins. Most people with gun collections keep gun safes which oftentimes are bolted to the floor, or at least too heavy to move easily.
I just immagine how you must picture Americans, that we are all obsessed with protecting our property etc. and that guns are so fundamental to our life... but it's really not that way. I think that someone breaking into my house is about 10,000 times less likely than winning the lottery, but to many people, the idea that we CAN have guns is what's important.

Because you have a delusional fear of Republicans, whom you view as the gun carriers. You caricaturize them and then blindly believe the caricature as reality. You obviously have never known one.
I know many Republicans, which is why I know I oppose most of their views. I just don't consider it right, truthful or NECESSARY to demonize them as you do, their views are logically refutable. In fact you demonize me just for not demonizing them even though I've not argued for their views.
You're fun to argue with, but you are not realistic in your view of either party as you demogog Republicans and believe Democrats to be pure as the virgin Mary.

It does, thanks. As far as gun control is concerned, I feel that there are just too many guns in circulation in the US for legislation to do anything other than remove guns from law abiding citizens, as has already been said. If the gun culture is going to fade away, it will be evolution and not revolution (although we all know how you guys like a good revolution

There have been a number of high profile shooting incidents in the UK recently, all of which took place in inner city areas, and were clearly a product of the gang culture embraced by kids who seem unable to interact with society in any productive way. I hope that this is not a sign of things to come. Hopefully, our national aversion to guns will prevent us from suffering the level of violent gun crime that you suffer over there.

Actually, I'm not for overly restrictive gun control and almost never go out unarmed in some way (I prefer other weapons), but don't particularly want my kids gunned down by some juvenile yahoo. What rights do I have in relation to freedom from fear of having members of my family killed by outlaw/nut members of our society or because of Republican attempts to conquer the world.

How often do you hear about a law abiding citizen that has a concealed weapons permit gunning down anyone? You have to be atleast 21 to have a concealed weapons permit so that doesn't exactly make them a juvenile. It's the people who get their guns on the "black market" that shoot and kill people.
If the governement were to do away with gun ownerships for law abiding citizens, they would just be putting more guns in the hands of criminals. That would give criminals a significant upper hand. Just take a look at the war on drugs and how that has failed. A war on guns would also fail.

Check the stats. Once of the most dangerous things you can do for your family is bring a gun in the house-- much more dangerous than not having one.

Check the real stats, not the left spin. You only make that work by ONLY counting actual shootings and ignoring situations where no shots are fired and crimes are prevented, which massively tilts the favor toward guns.
Or are you saying your daughter being raped in her bed is OK with you as long as no one is shot?

How about responsible gun owners who secure their weapons. Properly secured weapons do not kill, I have a 9mm pistol. locked in an ammo box keys secured. But very accessable if needed. Also I have a 12 guage that is locked up in a tool box. But What do I know? And I keep ammo seperate. Never had a problem. And if the Cops knock. I let them know what I have, and where they are. Why so nobody gets hurt.

To be a liberal is to believe we should put reasonable limits on gun ownership.
At the same time we cannot have any limits on abortion because the government is unable to maintain reasonable limits and it's just the start of a path to ban them.

I personally am considering converting to liberalism. Consider the benefits:
- You are never responsible for anything you do, you only did it because of Republicans. Like voting to invade Iraq
- You need to have no actual logic for your views, you just memorize talking points and discuss your feelings
- You are free to endlessly contradict your own arguments
- You never need to respond to a question about your views, you just start talking about a Republican view on an unrelated issue as if that somehow has anything to do with the question
- You have no responsibility for the consequences of your policies
- You are free to change at any time in the future your view based on what happens in the future. So for example you can blast Hussein for WMDs and later say you always knew he didn't have them
- You can believe whatever Democratic politicians tell you, they would never lie to you
- You can reject all Republican politicians views out of hand, they always lie and don't believe what they are saying themselves
- When you are presented with a Democratic view you realize yourself is illogical, you can reject the argument because you can be secure in the belief a Democrat has already figured this out and you just don't know how they did it.
It's easy, you are completely and totally freed of the burden of thinking in a complex world. Thinking is hard, why are we doing this when we have Democrats to do it for us? It makes sense, think about it.

Good question. This is why you are more fun to debate then most of your liberal brethren. Do I WANT people to own those things? No.
But your phrasing isn't right, my position is I don't believe it's governments role to stop them. Government in no way needs to enable them to do so, so I'm not clear how they will accomplish those things.
I also am more afraid of giving government the power to restrict our rights then I am of people figuring out how to own things I don't want them to own. As someone who lives in hysterical fear you cannot call Yemen and discuss bomb making without potential NSA attention I would think you would understand that fear.
On the flip side, do you believe a woman should be able to murder a viable 9 month old baby as long as she hasn't delivered yet by sucking it's brains out as the Democratic party does? Do you believe a child, who can't get an aspirin from a school nurse without their parents approval should be able to get an abortion without their parents permission or even knowledge as the Democratic party does?
