Message Board rumor (mostly Redskin message boards at that)
Vilma is in the last year of his contract and Betts just signed one that would have the whole Signing bonus due at the time of the trade so that won't work.
The reason for the rumor is rhe Jets are moving to a 3-4 lineup and Vilma didn't like his role in that scheme last year and the Jets are looking for a better fit.
I'd make the trade if Betts weren't included (#6 for Vilma and the #25)
If Adrian Peterson is available at #6, I think they'd go for it.

While the Redskins are hard up for a defensive line stud, getting Vilma would be amazing.
Hate to see them trade out of the top 10 though, especially when the defensive line crop is so strong.

I'd go as far as Betts for Vilma and their 2nd rounder, without swapping 1st rounders. If the #6 pick is involved than Betts stays here, if they insist on Betts and the #6 then the Skins should get the 3rd rounders in 07 and 08 to go along with the 1st and 2nd this year.
Everyone will say
1. The Jets won't give up Vilma and the 2nd rounder for Betts... I say fine see what back is available at #25.
2. The Jets won't give up all that to swap #1... I say OK.
I'd love to get Vilma but if he is no longer a benifit to them and their new scheme then thay should take what they can get for him. To get Betts they need to give up more than just Vilma, to get us to swap picks they'll need to give up Vilma and then some

But we can't throw that in their faces, we have to keep up the persona that they are a real football team.
If Peterson falls to #6 we can get Vilma The #25 and our 2nd rounder back

Thats just foolish for NY. Betts isn't worth Vilma and a 2nd round. Thats just realistic. Running backs are not valued that much because so many of them are found in latter rounds of the draft to begin with.

The Jets are hurting for a back and Vilma doesn't fit the middle in Mangini's 3-4. If we could get him without giving up Betts and they throw in a additional pick or two I'd go for it.

I live in new york and unfortunately watch the jets a lot. I love betts but he isn't the caliber of vilma. This is a situation that was brought up because of the jets and skins trading history. I don't see this trade ever, ever happening unless we give up more draft picks than we should

Vilma's the same size as Marshall and made about the the same number of tackles, as well as no sacks. I know Vilma's had a great year the year before last, but also know the Jets don't think they need him. He's certainly not worth our #6 and probably not Betts either, since we already have one Marshall and Rocky and a better MLB (Fletcher) becoming an FA. It doesn't bother me that Fletcher is 31. Two or three years out of him is all we need to contend, providing we fill a couple of other gaps.
Also, Portis' health is still in question. We need Betts both as a backup and to take some of the burden off Portis. RB is a place we should leave well enough alone.
This would be one of the worst trades to ever take place in my opinion. It is so one sided it isn't even funny. An undersized middle linebacker to a defense with bad DT's, for probably the best backup RB (possibly should be a starter) except maybe Michael Turner. Not only that, Portis will probably get injured again. And then a severe swing in draft pick exchange? I don't think so.

Vilma may be undersized, but he is so fast sideline to sideline and that makes him perfect for a 4-3 scheme. Betts could be a starter but there is always a huge risk of him breaking down because he is not used to a huge beating for all sixteen games in one year. Vilma may have had one bad year in a new system but he is still young and is a far superior talent to Betts and that is why the first round picks must be swapped.
Betts signed a brand new deal with signing bonus money in the range of $5M which means that the Redskins would eat the ENTIRE amount on this year's cap if they were to trade him.
I see NO value to this trade when you consider that it will also cost the Redskins $5M in cap that they just don't have to throw away.
Just typical off season lamentations and rumors.

well then wuts the point of the redskins signing to rb's to huge contracts one of thems gotta go. Managements is not gonna wanna pay betts to go in 4 5-10 plays a game
Betts' contract is extremely reasonable over the length of the contract... but that's what signing bonuses are for... to pro-rate money over a longer time. It isn't 'huge' at all... his extension was 5-years, $11M or so... or $2.2M a season... very reasonable.
Betts' contract was one of the most economical and reasonable contracts in recent Redskins' history, and is very commenserate with his duties as a BACKUP/PLATOON to Clinton Portis.
But since in salary cap land, you have to pay the ENTIRE signing bonus up front if you trade a player, it makes this deal bunk.
So just to be clear for you... great contract... not so great to dump the contract and pay the bonus up front.

tusche my friend
but i dont get why betts would sign a deal to be a backup when he could go to a team and start like the jets raiders or maybe some others and make more money too
the first time i heard about this trade was on jetsinsider.com but they were talking about portis and #6 for vilma and #25 but mayb keeping both the hb's will take the load off portis so he wont have to take such a beating
