A big reason that Irvin got in IMO was because of the quality of the QB he had throwing to him. Can you imagine if Monk had played with a QB like Irvin had? OR, conversely, what chance would Irvin have of being there if he had played with the QBs that Monk had?
I am not saying that Irvin does not deserve to get in it is just a huge mistake that he is in there before Monk - Monk is going to get there BUT he should already be there.

Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

The question posed by some worthless analyst, whom does not deserve to be named, is:
Can you remember a single memorable catch by Art Monk?
Well yes! What is -everybody in the studio thinking!
For one, they could remember the catch he made against the Broncos to break Steve Largent's record with the largest number of all time receptions!
Everybody on the field knew the ball was going to him!
Every single coach knew the ball was going to Monk!
For God's sake, everybody watching that game in- and outside the stadium KNEW the ball was going to him!
Ripien did not look elsewhere, he just threw the ball to him!
AND HE STILL MANAGE TO GET OPEN AND MAKE A GREAT CATCH OF THE DARN BALL!!!
YOU, yes YOU, the idiot in the NFL Network should have watched the game of football before anybody handed you a job there. You know NOTHING about Art Monk. You are a worthless piece of used toilet paper!
Daniel Snyder has defined incompetence, failure and greed to true Washington Redskins fans for over a decade and a half. Stay away from football operations !!!

Here's food for thought:
What will Marvin Harrison's legacy be and how long will it take for him to get voted in? Harrison is the modern day Art Monk. No one seems to mention that. It's like someone needs to check Marvin's birth certificate to verify that Art is not his father.
Both guys shun the spotlight. Both guys are quiet and someone what introverted. Both guys no how to run routes and make the "important" catches. Both guys are not spectacular but constant. Monk is a far better blocker than Marvin. Marvin is faster than Art. But they both make catches when needed. Marvin has probably the greatest QB of all-time throwing him the ball. Art had good QBs but not bonafide pass throwing HOFs throwing him the ball. Art amassed 900+ catches and 12,000+ yards in a run-run-pass offense. Marvin's offense is pass oriented.
The fact that Art Monk amassed 98% his stats on a non-pass oriented team with multiple QBs that are not in the same class as some of the other WRs that in the HOF speaks volumes. Someone said that Sharpe talked only about Monk not getting in and not about who got in is right. There needs to be someone in the media to be a "blowheart" for Monk getting in like punk-azz Peter King was the "blowheart" in the media for not getting Monk in.
He doesn't have a 'signature' catch, GTFOH!!!! What was Irvin's??? I got nothing against Irvin and he probably deserves to get in but not be for Monk...
Here's an idea:
What would happen when Jerry Rice, a sure fire first ballot guy, is up for vote and he decides to announce to the world that he will not accept his nomination until Monk get's in. And let's all of the voters and the world know how much of a travesty it is that Monk is not in. What would they do then? Rice has got records that will probably never be broken and he is not a "character" problem like some of the other HOFs are/were. What does the HOF do then? Go ahead and elect and hold the ceremony without him? Maybe.... Somebody that is a bonafided, no questions asked, HOF'er, needs to get on his soapbox and tell the world about this travesty and exposed those idiots that are not putting this man in for what they are, idiots.....

I agree with almost everything you said, but I think Monk was faster in his prime than Harrison. Monk was a lot faster than people give him credit.
Does anyone have Jerry Rice's email or snail mail address?
If Darrel Green gets selected next year and Monk doesn't. DG should wear a Monk Jersey during his enshrinement speech or be wearing one next year the Saturday before the SB so he can call out the DUMB HOF voters. Every Skins fan that has a chance to go to Canton should wear a Monk jersey. I would love to have a HOF T-shirt and print Monks and list all of the HOF WR on the back and put Monk's stats right at the top were they belong.

About Harrison, I read this
From Peter King today.
Interesting.
I think there isn't a good-to-great player in this league who shies away from physical contact more than Marvin Harrison. The book is out on the guy -- hit him early and threaten to take him out of the game -- and everyone knows it. It's absurd he didn't crash into safety Chris Harris and break up his first-half interception.
From Peter King today.
Interesting.

I think it should say more about a guy who had to adjust to so many QB's and still put up great numbers, then to someone who had the same QB most of his career.

See, punk-azz is starting on Marvin now. By the time Marvin Harrison finishes, he will probably be second behind Jerry Rice. Then punk-azz King will be trying to keep him out because he does take the big hit. Rice didn't take the big hit either but I bet he get's in on the first ballot....

Countertrey wrote:My real question though is, was he as qualified, or more qualified, to be enshrined than Art Monk?
Apples and oranges. Wehrle was a pick of the old timer's committee ( or whatever the heck they call it). Monk was not. Frankly, I am far more distressed by the less qualified criminal Irvin and excellent, but not as qualified, Thurman Thomas...
Monk absolutely should have been in... but not at Werhle's expense.
Wrong on your first point. Wehrli was not a selction of the Old Timer's Committee. "Wehrli, a cornerback for the St. Louis Cardinals between 1969 and '82, was in his final year of eligibility as a modern era candidate." Furthermore, the selection committee doesn't select based on postion. By that I mean that they don't say, okay, we're going to select one DB, one OL, one DL, one LB, one WR, or whatever. They are supposed to be selecting on whether or not a player is worthy of selection to the HOF. And on that basis, I say that if it came down to selecting Art Monk or Roger Wehrli, than my vote goes to Art Monk whether Irvin was already in, or not. Let Wehrli slide, and then let him get in through the Old-Timers like Gene Hickerson and Charlie Sanders did. I hope and pray that is not how Art Monk gets in. There are enough reasons already posted to justify that his selection is long past due.

I thought a letter from Gibbs and Riggins stating that they wanted their busts removed because they wanted no part of an organization that is so dysfunctional and not about the things its should be.

Yeah Peter King came around, sort of. Look at what he said in reponse to Dan Snyder's quote.
Quote of the Week IV
"A good man and legitimate Hall of Famer is being denied entry for reasons we never know, by people who secretly vote. Art Monk is a Hall of Famer by any measure. This is not right."
-- Washington owner Dan Snyder.
"Dan, not a bad point. As one of the 40 Hall selectors, I'd love to see Hall voting be opened up so we would be accountable in such an important election for how we stand. But what happened to Monk, in my opinion, is mostly bad. Good for Monk: The major roadblock in front of him, Michael Irvin, is no longer a roadblock; he's in. Bad for Monk: Next year comes Cris Carter, with 161 more catches, five more Pro Bowls and 62 more touchdowns in the same number of seasons. Then Tim Brown, with 154 more catches, and the stat race is on. Every year, Monk will fall farther behind in the numbers game. As someone who changed his mind on Monk and strongly advocated him this year (unquestioned leader on a three-time Super Bowl champ, superb downfield blocker, retired as the all-time receptions leader, never squawked for the ball with some other me guys in the locker room), I think it's going to be tough to get him in if he hasn't gotten in by now."
So what is it? Is it stats from now on? Is is something else, or a combination of things? Who knows anymore? Maybe it's just having a good mouthpiece to plead your case. Look at what else Putz King says.
"St. Louisans, give Bernie Miklasz a very big hand this morning. If not for the convincing case made by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch columnist, Roger Wehrli would not have made the Hall of Fame on Saturday."
So is that what it takes? A good speech by your appointed spokesman? With Wilbon gone, who was appointed to present Art Monk's qualifications this year? As I said earlier, I believe that Art Monk is more deserving than Roger Wehrli. But hey, why not put them both in if they are both deserving of the honor?
Putz King also says that he was the one elected to present Paul Tagliabue's case to the committee. Poor Paul! He didn't get in either. King says, probably while trying to pat himself on the back, " I can't tell you exactly what I said or what Tagliabue's detractors said. What I can tell you is how intense a period his debate was. It lasted 57 minutes, the longest in my 15 years on the panel." If Art Monk name came up for discussion after this, then the committee was probably too worn out to think clearly anymore. Not that they would have thought clearly anyway.
So what do we, as avid supporters of a deserving Hall of Fame candidate have to look forward to? Has Art Monk hit the high point of his bell curve, and is he now in a slide downward, as more candidates with "stats" become eligible as Putz King says? God I hope not. Art Monk deserves to be in the Hall of Fame!

That paragraph says it all.
I'm wondering if we'll just have to wait for a new generation (or system of) HOF voters to come through. People that have respect for things over and above their own opinions.

This illustrates how screwed up the HOF selection process is. Monk didn't get in on the first ballot "because the HOF is about more than stats", but he will have a harder time in the future because lesser WR with greater numbers will get in because they have the numbers. Irvin and Swann got in with lesser numbers than Monk (1/3 in Swann's case) because of their big game / big play impact. While Mr. Invisable in the SB, Thorman Thomas, got in bases solely on his numbers. For every reason you would pick Irvin and Swann over Monk you could say the same for Clark and Sanders. Clark's numbers are almost identical to Irvins and Sanders numbers far exceeds Swann's (including the fact that Sanders broke Swann's SB record in SB22, by bloody half time)!
The selection process is so staight up garbbage it isn't even funny. These guys sit around and find ways to rationalize keeping out who they don't want in and find ways to put guys in that they want in.
The plain simple fact is there are enough guys that doen't want Monk in for whatever reason to keep him out.
And I bet King knew even with him "supporting" Monk there would still be enough people to keep him out. That is the only reason he "changed his mind"!

Hey! Joe Don Looney was the man.
Besides... what's wrong with making the voter's lives hell? It would just serve to push the vote to where it belongs... the coaches. You know... people who actually know something of the game?
Art Monk fans and football fans everywhere are clamoring for a change in the system to reveal the way each voter voted. I disagree. Do that and every Joe Don Looney fan from Main to Madagascar will make every voter's life hell forever.
