1962 Thunderbird Sports Roadster

Post by Redskin in Canada »

Hey Guys,

Being the offseason and all ...

Are there any classic car fans here? I am not a collector. I only own two cars (a family car and a sports car). But I enjoy driving very much. Driving my two seater is, in addition to this website, my therapy (a bit fast but -always- within the legal speed limits ;) just like JansenFan). But I am seriously considering the purchase of a touring car for a collection of -one- car. The car that I have in mind is the 1962 Thunderbird Sports Roadster:

I would like to drive around the Cape Breton Trailin it.

I have a few questions:

1) Is anybody familiar with this car?

2) Are there any mechanical or maintenance issues to be concerned about?

3) Are the prices quoted in the Manheim Gold Guide realistic?

Code: Select all

1962_THUNDERBIRD           Dsp/HP  Eng  Fair   Good   Exc    Show
2D_HARDTOP_1961-63         390/300  V8  5,200  9,000 18,000 23,000
2D_SPORTS_ROADSTER_1962-63 390/300  V8 16,000 25,000 44,000 51,000
2D_CONVERTIBLE_1961-63     390/300  V8 12,000 20,000 39,000 43,000

I know thereis an M option with a more powerful engine, which should add a few hundred dollars to the above prices.

Thanks in advance for your input,

RiC

Its a classic ford......I believe that speaks for itself! I don't know anything about pricing but that car is something that can never be matched again. I say if you can afford it and that is your cup of tea, go for it. As far as mechanical issues, it's a 45yr old car. It has lots of things that can go wrong with it.

Trust your gut feeling. If you have that certain feeling where you have to buy that car, buy it.

If you are looking for something that is fast, this is not your car. If you want a classic that you can feel good cruising in, this is your car.

I am looking for a touring car. I can go very fast with a different car that is very maneuvrable and close to the ground.

I am looking for a -reliable- car to go into another era at a touring pace. While the three questions above still remain open, one of my concerns about collectibles is that I enjoy -driving- the car and not owning it for -show-. To me the pleasure comes from driving and not displaying it. Surely, I do not wish to spend most of the time fixing a car or having it in a repar shop. So, while I understand that thecar is 45 years old, I do not know enough about what to look for (or avoid).

If I get one, it would be fixed to a very good condition, probably not concourse condition but pretty good. I look after my cars and they treat me good in return. What I wanted to know is whether somebody here or somebody you might know had actually owned one of them and tell us a bit of their experience (the good andthe bad).

Congratulations on your 1000 posts HEROHAMO.

The car is not exactly what I have in mind but it is an interesting idea if I ever decide to "tour" East LA.
