Trung Poll
After much thinking, I have come to this conclusion. In the NFL, when you have a fast- elusive back like Mr. Portis, you need a bruiser to change pace, ala Ladell Betts. We have no need for Trung anymore. Add the fact that we can gain cap room from cutting him, and we have no reason to keep him.
He is a poor man's Clinton Portis, and I want to know if anyone thinks we should keep him. It's simple, yeah or neah....

I'm with you, 56. I just don't see how Trung fits in to what Coach is trying to do here. I wouldn't be as concerned if he had stayed healthy all last year--there's some benefit to having a "change-up" available as a backup. But his injury problems last year leave me unconvinced that he can be productive in this scheme, even with limited carries. Seem to recall that his pass-blocking was less than stellar, as well.
Take the cap room and add to the team elsewhere. Maybe use it to hold on to Johnson or add to the D-line--seems like money better spent to me.

.......I think a good question would be; how would Portis have ran behind SOS blocking schemes?
I think we should hold on to Trung. I think Portis will make it very competitive this offseason. Remember The Rams was not a running team and is still not. I would love to see Portis get his number and see Trungs stock rise do to Bugels protocols.

56,
Seems to me that Bettis, Cartwright, and Johnson (if we keep him) would fit the bill for spelling Portis every few series. Candidate just seems to be a lesser version of Portis--I don't see the value in keeping him with Clinton here now.
Heard somebody in another thread touting Sultan McCoullough earlier tonight....Not sure about that either. Maybe he'll break through this year on special teams, and add to the offense. Could be, but I didn't see much last year that got me fired up about him.

Ok how about this - the fact that Portis might be good for 20 runs in a game and instead of a slower big back to bang through, why not hit the defense when they are flagging with a guy with MORE speed and receiving ability?
I would love to see Trung behind this line.

I agree with you SmurfSkin, Rock and Ladell are what the doctor ordered.
SkinsfaninRoanoke... Joe Gibbs is counting on Clinton running the ball more than 20 times a game. In just over a year and a half as Denver's full time starter, Portis has ran the ball more than 21 times 17 times. He's gotten 34 or more carries twice, and once rushed the rock 38 times.
He's a thoroughobread, and Trung is the quarter horse outside of Wal Mart. The very same one my mom wouldn't let me ride, "because .25 cents is too much to waist on it."

I think we should keep him, and see if something can be done to maximize his productivity given limited playing time. Gibbs is a master at getting the most out of a players capabilities, and Spurrier was never able to utilize Trung in an effective manner. Maybe Gibbs can use him. If not, let him go next year!
Sit back and watch the Redskins.

I would love to see what Trung can do behind this line with Bugal in charge. He would be a great speed threat behind Portis - good one-two punch. He seemed to pick up momentum later in the year after not doing much to impress the first half of the year - his cap $$'s won't make a huge difference so I say keep him into camp and see how he performs there.

Trung is CP2
If Portis goes down, Trung is the next best thing to for the speed role.
However, I think Ladell will be the back up to Portis. Ladell has burst and has not had injuries to is legs like Trung (Ladell had a cracked forearm).
I see the depth chart as:
Portis
Betts
Trung
-McCullough -- practice squad

If Trung played special teams, I'd say keep him. But with Betts, Cartwright, and McCullough, you have enough depth for a run by committee approach that could hold the fort in case of a Portis injury, Betts and McCullough could play special teams, and Rock will fill the FB/H-Back role. Trung's skills became sort of redundant with Portis on board (If we had copped a 'brusier' back like an Anthony Thomas, Trung would be the better fit as a change of pace).
As far as Sultan, I really feel the B&G are sittin on a gem with him, good size (bigger than Trung and Betts) and strength WITH speed. He impressed me with the few carries he got but moreso on his special teams coverage (several times I saw he was the first guy down making the tackle.) I just think Trung may be the odd man out. But then again, what do I know...

Two formation shifts, one man in motion, and a counter trey...those were the days...

It's all good to say he can carry the ball that often, but until I see him do it game in and out for a couple of years without getting dinged up badly, I don't know that I will believe it. 300 pounders on the line, linebackers 30 pounds heavier than just 15 years ago.
I still say it will be good to have a speedy backup.
Another thing - remember CP talking about not throwing the ball to him at his press conference. It may have been a joke, but I take it seriously... he isn't the receiver type. Why not have a third down back who can come in with no loss of juice and catch and zoom?
Trung only counts 900k against the cap for goshsakes...
