Brady Quinn vs. Troy Smith

Talk about the AFC, NFC, the NFL Draft, College Football... anything football that has no Washington Football Team relevance.

Brady Quinn vs. Troy Smith

Post by Mursilis »

So I was reading some end of regular season NFL wrap-up columns on a few sites, and more than one commentator suggested the Lions doomed themselves by winning vs. Dallas, thus losing the top pick in the draft, with the chance to draft Brady Quinn, who (according to what I read) will surely now become a Raider. Now, I'll be the first to admit I don't know much about college football AT ALL, but what about Troy Smith? He won the Heisman, did he not? He led Ohio State to an undefeated season, right? Is Brady Quinn that much better that he's a lock over Smith for the first pick? The idea that Quinn seems to be such an obvious choice over Smith puzzles me. I await some thoughts from true college football fans.

I don't see Troy Smith panning out, he seems like one of those "College QB's", I compare him to Akili Smith, anyone remember him. And Brady Quinn, everytime ND been in the public eye, he chokes, he was absolute garbage last night. Myself, I think the best QB in this draft will be Kevin Kolb out of Houston. I hope some teams look at Colt Brennan as well out of Hawaii, all sorts of NCAA passing records and he's got that Brett Farve fastball and alot of touch on his passes.

The benefit of Quinn is that he's been running a pro style offense for some time now. That will help him in the transition from college to pro.

I would draft Troy Smith over Brady Quinn 100 times out of 100. Quinn has spent a few years beating the cupcakes that ND schedules and getting destroyed by the elite programs. Smith, on the other hand, has spent a few years occasionally playing cupcakes but mostly cutting his teeth against the best teams in the country. Quinn has shown nothing aside from an ability to wow the media.

Akili Smith was drafted because he was raw and of "prototypical" size. Smith is very undersized, and would probably be a 3rd-4th round pick.

Troy Smith will probably go second round, while Quinn will probably go to Detroit. I think the thread should be Quinn vs. Russell, personally.

I agree. Russell is a bigger, faster, better version of Dante Culpepper. I think he will add more excitement to a franchise than will Quinn. Another Vince Young??

With all the publicity this team is getting right now, I can't believe that no one has mentioned
Jared Zabransky from Boise St. 6'2 203. Maybe a bit bigger. Can make all the throws and proved that he can put it together at the end of a big game and win it all when you are the underdog. That was such an impressive game the other night that I have to say that as long as he does well in the scouting combine that he may be a 1st rounder. Late probably.

Ironically, when he leaves, Gibran Hamdan's brother will possibly be his successor.

Russell and Brian Brohm if he comes out are both better pro prospects than Quinn IMO.

It would've been if I actually knew anything about college football, but that's already been noted. Seriously, I never even heard of Russell until this week.

I can't find it now, but I was looking at some mock draft scenarios, and saw that 2 different people, from different organizations who do mock draft stuff, predict the Skins to target Russell with the #6 overall pick. Why? They said that Brunell is too old and too expensive for the Skins cap situation. Russell would compete with Campbell for the starting job and at the very least, the Skins would have 2 young QB's for the future, as teams these days really need to have 2 solid QB's due to injuries.

Not gonna happen, but I thought it was interesting. At this point, for some strange reason, I actually like having Brunell for a back-up. But only if he reworks his contract, though.

Some 'experts' actually thought we'd target another QB?!?! Amazing. Amazingly stupid, that is.

allow me to make a definitive statement here:

brady quinn is terrible.

i have seen far too many of his games, due to notre dame's absurdly undeserved annual overexposure/game coverage. i can't for the LIFE of me figure out where the giant media boner for quinn comes from. he has been stunningly UNimpressive in every game i've seen, and even downright awful in a couple of them.

all he EVER does is heave "jump balls" into coverage and count on his WR to pull it down. this strategy is successful in most of their games because as others have mentioned, they are playing inferior opponents. but whenever they play a real team, the strategy of course backfires tremendously and quinn looks like the garbage that he really is.

i am convinced he has absolutely no idea how to actually "read" a defense/coverage and find the correct receiver. i would put money (if i had any) on the fact that he WILL lead the NFL in interceptions next year, by FAR. he is going to have such a disastrous, "crash-down-to-earth" season he may never recover-- because he will realize that he's not any good.

(incidentally, he is basically the exact same quarterback as eli manning, who i've been saying for 2 years has no idea how to make proper reads, and makes all his good plays on "jump balls" heaved into coverage that he gets lucky on because plastic-ho is like 11 feet tall. eli has been exposed as the fraud that he is, and so will quinn).

whatever team is foolish enough to draft such an obvious bust deserves their fate (raiders? lions? i'm looking your way...)

I agree with dcd - I think it says an awful lot about the quality level of this draft if the so called "experts" think that this guy could be selected in the top 5.

I also think that eli will never be a big time QB while he still looks like he just got out of college. If this guy had a brain somebody could try and get it through to him that he needs to start "looking" like he's serious about playing and he has to get in shape to play the position.
We're talking "the physique factor". Take a look at Brady, Brees and a bunch of the guys that obviously have been in the workout/weight room and bulked up to better play the position. Brady even discussed this before the game - hee feels it is very important to be in great shape - eli looks like he needs a decent meal. By the way - get a little excited about being the QB, please.

I love the fact that eli is a NY QB because I do not think he has approached the NFL with the right attitude and he will not ever be that good a QB - if he ever was. I also hope they keep that idiot coach!
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)
