Dear THN brothers and sisters,

This is to wish you a very happy holidays. I hope that wherever you are you know that my family and I will think of you and wish you a merry Christmas. We wish you well even if you do not celebrate this religious holiday.

I hope that the New 2007 (lucky seven) brings us satsfactions in our family lives and professional environments. I hope that the Redskins find their way and give us more reasons to be proud again.

Thanks in particular to the admin and staff for their work to keep this website one more year ahead.

A question asked by most of the world, it seems, apart from those of us in the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. In truth, few people know the origin of the term itself, but we're all just glad to have it as a public holiday.

Depending on what you read, the term stems from the old practice of feudal lords handing out boxes of gifts to their serfs (much like a Christmas bonus), or the serfs taking boxes to work with them on Boxing Day into which the lords would place money, or it might be that this was the day when churches would open their boxes of donations made to help the needy.

The link between all the suggested origins is the concept of gifts or money being given to the needy, rather than the exhange of gifts between "equals", which takes place on Christmas Day.

The most visible observation of Boxing Day now is that it is traditionally a day for sport. In the UK, a full schedule of football matches is played, and many other sports also hold showpiece events. In Australia, the Boxing Day Test is a huge tradition - when Australia start a five day test cricket match against a visiting team. This year, that team is England, and 100,000 fans are expected to watch this great sporting fixture. Alas, results in the previous three matches between the teams have rendered this test almost meaningless, but it is one of the great events of sport - little understood in the US, of course, but then you baffle most of the world with the World Series. :wink:

Dear Santa:

This year for christmas I would like to have a GM who will use our draft picks wisely and not over pay for "established" players. I would also like to have a new play caller on offense, preferably Joe Gibbs, who will allow JC to use that arm of his and will also allow Santana to use his speed downfield. If those things are no possible, a Superbowl win in 2008 will do just fine!!

Ah, but at least Boxing day is neither:

- the day to throw away Christmas gift boxes (as in, "Ok kids, llet's clean up here!")

- simply a strange name for a day of soccer-football.

I didn't find out about this until late last night and I had to share this..........Did you all know that NORAD tracks Santa Claus? And get this! You can actually call them up and they'll tell you exactly where he is!

NORAD uses four high-tech systems to track Santa - radar, satellites, Santa Cams and jet fighter aircraft.

Detecting Santa all starts with the NORAD radar system called the North Warning System. This powerful radar system has 47 installations strung across the northern border of North America. NORAD makes a point of checking the radar closely for indications of Santa Claus leaving the North Pole on Christmas Eve.

The moment our radar tells us that Santa has lifted off, we use our second mode of detection, the same satellites that we use in providing warning of possible missile launches aimed at North America. These satellites are located in a geo-synchronous orbit (that's a cool phrase meaning that the satellite is always fixed over the same spot on the Earth) at 22,300 miles above the Earth. The satellites have infrared sensors, meaning they can detect heat. When a rocket or missile is launched, a tremendous amount of heat is produced - enough for the satellites to detect. Rudolph's nose gives off an infrared signature similar to a missile launch. The satellites can detect Rudolph's bright red nose with practically no problem. With so many years of experience, NORAD has become good at tracking aircraft entering North America, detecting worldwide missile launches and tracking the progress of Santa, thanks to Rudolph.

The third detection system we use is the Santa Cam. We began using it in 1998 - the year we put our Santa Tracking program on the Internet. NORAD Santa Cams are ultra-cool high-tech high-speed digital cameras that are pre-positioned at many places around the world. NORAD only uses these cameras once a year - Christmas Eve. The cameras capture images of Santa and the Reindeer as they make their journey around the world. We immediately download the images on to our web site for people around the world to see. Santa Cams produce both video and still images.

The fourth detection system we use is the NORAD jet fighter. Canadian NORAD fighter pilots, flying the CF-18, take off out of Newfoundland to intercept and welcome Santa to North America. Then at numerous locations in Canada other CF-18 fighter pilots escort Santa. While in the United States, American NORAD fighter pilots in either the F-15 or F-16 get the thrill of flying with Santa and the famous Reindeer Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen and Rudolph. About a dozen NORAD fighters in Canada and the United States are equipped with Santa Cams.
