Portis To Be Traded?
WXYT radion in Detroit was apparantly talking about a potential Shaun Rogers for Portis trade during the offseason. A buddy of mine that's a Lions fan told me about it and I was wondering if anyone else had heard about this? I'm not sure if they were talking about this as a potential move that the Lions should try to make or if this was something that had actually been discussed by the Skins and Lions. Hopefully this is just a rumor and not something substaintial because this would be a rediculously stupid move by the Skins.

LOL, that's a good one. Where do people come up with this crap? My personal favorite is Matt Shaub for Portis. If anyone is getting traded (no one is) it is Betts...
I actually love the idea of trading Betts for some high end picks. I think him going nuts at the end of the season here is a blessing in disguise. Whether or not we want to take the out or not remains to be seen. He has been playing great but the fact is he still puts the ball on the ground and he is a liability in pass protection. I think his value is as high now as it ever will be. As for who will back up Portis?? We still have no idea what Manuel White can do and it has been proven over and over again that you can find quality backs probably easier than any other position in football. We also have some guy named T.J Duckett we could resign...talk about a change of pace, Portis to Duckett.

While it would be really nice to have both Portis and Betts sharing the running duties, I just don't see it. Of the two, Betts is the better bargain. His salary is modest for a starting back, he has anew long term deal and he has proven that he can deliver big games. Portis's salary alone will discourage potential traders.

Why don't you see it? We have high paid Portis who runs a consistent 1500 yards a year and reasonable Betts. We want a strong running game and you can only rush one guy so much. It makes little sense to me with them both under contract and Betts being reasonable we would NOT have them both there.
BTW, Betts may be a better bargain, but if (and I don't want it, I like Portis) we were to trade him, we would be hammered on cap. The other team would have to trade us a guy they get a bunch of cap hit for. And even then we would both be accelerating the hit so I still don't know if it would work.
We signed Portis to be a Skin. Personally I am thrilled! I want him to stay.

Agreed.
Can you imaging how happy Gibbs will be going into next year with TWO legit and talented healthy running backs? It's a dream for any coach that predicates his game on running.

No way - I totally agree with all who understand that we need to keep as much depth as we can and I really believe most new players on this team (aside from some depth on the line) will be on the defensive side.
where do these idiot ideas start - these are not very knowledgeable fans.
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)
It's easy to see how things like this get started. The thing I'm seeing the most while I poke around the 'net looking at football sites is that many people feel CP can't take the 30 carries a game that Gibbs falls back on when the "Scheme Of The Week" falls flat, while Betts can, and Duckett could easily complement. Of course, it's easy to forget what a phenomenal year CP had last season since he's been out hurt...and most of the rumors seem to start in cities other than the one our team plays in.
I'd pay it no mind...but it's good to have something to chew on these days, waiting for the draft.

What I was saying was Skins get a First rounder Second rounder and Shaun Rodgers heck and throw in that rookie linebacker from Florida State. Then I would maybe consider a trade. Other than that anything else would be preposterious.chaddukes wrote:HEROHAMO wrote:No way. Only for a first round pick and there second round and Shaun ROdgers.
Whoa, Now! This is the skins. We don't make stupid trades like that. We trade Portis and a 1st rounder for a guy like Shaun Rogers!

That would be funny if it wasn't so true.
How about we trade him to Denver for Champ Bailey and have them chip in their 2nd round pick, too!

Are you kidding me?
At worst CP and LB are insurance for each other and at best they can be the best RB combo in the league if Gibbs/Saunders uses them right (which I think they will).
Agree we are set on offense with some depth at o-line. D needs help at DE, mlb and SS. Just my 2cents....

This whole thread is a joke. CP and LB are staying unless we fire Gibbs and bring back Spurrier.

Well, one could argue that Denver hasn't really dropped off since they traded him.
I think by "you" they meant the Redskins. Also, when Denver traded him neither he nor Champ Bailey had the burden of accelearating bonuses prohibiting a trade and neither wanted to stay.

I think it really depends on what the offer is. Remember Herschel Walker?
I think everyone does - now are you saying that it is still possible that someone will make a trade like that? Now that was 5 players AND 5 draft picks. One of those picks became Emmit Smith as I recall. Now, please identify who will make that sort of trade? If you cannot then please advise what you are adding to this scenario. GET REAL!
The pukes were able to trade Walker because they were absolutely one of the worst teams in the NFL and had absolutely no prospect of getting better.
We are not going to be able to pull something like that because nobody is going to give us that many players and picks AND we are NOT trading a player who is better than Walker ever was.

Sorry, that logic is not applicable. Portis did not want to stay there and they felt he was not that important to them. We do not have that happening here.
About the possibility - I do not believe they will consider this BUT..... First, we have to agree that Betts is not and will never be anywhere near the threat that Portis is or be as complete a package that you can build around as Portis is.
I do not think anyone ever trades someone that is this important to your team.
Gibbs likes him. He likes it here. The other players like him. The team does not have a back to replace him. We can go on and on - we need to build around him.
I do not believe we can get another back in here and hope he fits in and then hope he is as good as Portis is.
