Hall of Fame Hogs

Post by genuswine hoglover »

I am a newbie to the site and have become hooked. This is the first time I have posted, but I sure have read a ton of posts. I may be new to the site, but I have been a 'skins fan since Bill McPeak was coach (ok, that dates me), but I remember all the great up and downs for a long time.

I love all the current discussions, but let me begin a discussion that is appropriate for the second coming of St. Joe: How in the world is it possible, that with four super bowls, and three SB victories in the last go around, that the only hall of fame player to come from that era is John Riggins? How is it possible that not one of the hogs, arguably the greatest line ever (and the namesake of this site) has made the Hall of Fame. Is there something going on that I don't understand? :? What do you think?

I posed this question to Wilbon in one of the Post Chat House Sessions:

Camp Lejeune, NC: Who do you think will be inducted into the HOF this year? Why has it taken so long for Art Monk to be inducted into the HOF? I thought he would be a shoo-in. Does Russ Grimm have a chance of being inducted the next few years?

Michael Wilbon: I don't know about Russ Grimm. I'm in favor of Grimm being inducted into the Hall of Fame. In fact, as a selector for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, I have not only voted for Grimm, but agitated for Grimm. And I'm one of the 2 people in the room who have nominated Art Monk and spoken on his behalf. But it appears to me that it is going to be very difficult for Monk to make it. The people who argue against Monk believe he wasn't a great impact player in terms of touchdowns scored and yards-per-catch. Now, I think this is insane. But I don't unilaterally install people in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. I'm one of 37 or 38 people voting in that room. It seems pretty silly to me that one of the 2 consistently great offense teams in the 1980's (the 49ers are obviously the other) would wind up having one offensive player (John Riggins) in the Hall of Fame. The quarterbacks changed, the running backs changed, the tight ends changed, even a few of the line men changed over the course of Joe Gibbs' 12 seasons. The only constant was Art Monk....well, Monk, Grimm, Bostic and Jacoby. To me Monk was prolific enough to be voted in easily. But as of know, there aren't enough people in that room that believe as I do. --Mike

It's time like these that I cringe so much when I hear commentators refer to Deon as a "future hall of famer" cornerback.

. . .Says who? Deon?

Please, Deion is not only a lock for the Hall of Fame, he is probably the best cover corner and punt returner ever to play the game. Just because his stint with the Redskins was so unmemorable doesn't change that...

What about Joe Jacoby????!!!!! I don't believe he's gone in there either. But, maybe I'm wrong. But Monk. That one eludes me. Does anybody remember how many times Monk sacrificed his body going across the middle? Or, when the posse went out in in full force and he would catch one in full stride. Beautiful thing!! Sometimes I think it's all beauracrcy.

Art Monk defintely deserves to be enshrined in the Hall of Fame! I feel in time that he will defintely be inducted!! Joe Jacoby and Russ Grimm are other possibilities!

Don't mind me. I'm just gonna vent a little here. Ignore the crazy person, and go about your business. Nothing more to see here.

Deion will be a first ballot Hall of Famer!! Part of this is his on the field accolades and the other is his excellent job of self promotion. No one can argue with the talent he had even though you had to listen to his loud mouth.
Death to all things remotely BLUE and SILVER!!!!!!!!!!! Hail Skins
