Five preseason games too many?

Post by SonnyRules »

For the second time in three years, we're scheduled for 5 preseason games. Personally, I think that's way too many. After all the key injuries last year in preseason around the league, I thought the NFL was really going to look hard at shortening the preseason. Doesn't seem like they did. We lost Noble last year in preseason and Samuels went down in the Carolina game (I think).

I just don't see the point in a preseason that's almost a third the length of the regular season. Too many chances for pointless injuries. What do you guys think?

i think we'll see quite a bit of the rookie undrafted free agents playing this preseason.

It always makes me nervous when addtitional preseason games are added. I agree though, I'm sure a lot of people fighting for positions will be playing most minutes...

With an entirely new coaching staff and a turned over roster, I'd say they need the practice. There is the concern of injuries and they do occur, but where else will you get 'real game experience' before the regular season?

As a concession, I would push for the return of the Intrateam 'SCRIMMAGE' (do they do that anymore?). As a young cat, it was a little hard to understand, but that 15 plays a side and then switch lended itself to a more controlled encounter I think. So remove two preseason games (for a max of 3 maybe), add two scrimmages and the coaches should have enough to work with for roster evaluation...
Two formation shifts, one man in motion, and a counter trey...those were the days...

It's 2 too many - but don't expect to see many familiar faces the first couple - or at least don't blink - you'll miss em. :)

Yeah, Spurrier got five games his first year, too, and to him the highlight of his whole pro coaching career seemed to be (say it with me)..."OSAKA."

Somehow, I doubt Gibbs will take a similar approach.

i agree that the preseason is a bit too long myself.
spurrier was hell bent over winning preseason games not joe gibbs.he will put in the ones that will need a hard look. more practice the better and less preseason games would be better.

don't worry about how long it is. gibbs will be giving a more than fair chance for the underdogs to make the team. i doubt the starters will see four full quarters throughout the entire preseason. it's not like he'll try any plays for anyone else to see first hand.

Post season games make me feel uneasy also. God forbid if something happens to Springs, Portis, or any other starter in preseason. I saw what Atlanta went through with Vick and us with Brandon Noble. Gibbs is smart. He won't push any players to play so hard that they get injured in pre-season. We probably will have a losing record in preseason. There is no sense in making your players put in 110% and risking injury for games that mean nothing.
