Skins in the last playoff spot?
Many of you probably think the Skins season is over. I'm not so sure that's the case! I see the last wildcard spot in the NFC as wide open. There are a lot of bad teams in the NFC this year.
Here are some Assumptions:
The following teams will win their divisions -- Cowboys, Bears, Saints, & Seahawks. One wildcard team will be the Panthers.
WHO GETS THE FINAL WILDCARD SPOT????
Week of December 3rd...and many of these are probably pretty likely:
Skins beat Falcons
Cowboys beat Giants
Panthers beat Eagles
Bears beat Vikes
Saints beat 49'ers
Packers beat Jets
Rams beat Cards
Pats beat Lions
Records after these games:
IN: Cowboys 8-4 Bears 10-2 Saints 8-4 Seahawks 7-4 Panthers 7-5
FINAL SPOT: Giants 6-6 Eagles 5-7 Vikes 5-7 Green Bay 5-7 Falcons 5-7 San Fran 5-7 Rams 6-6 REDSKINS 5-7
OUT: TB, Det & Cards.
Week of December 10th...and many of these are probably pretty likely
Dallas versus NO -- doesn't matter
Panthers beat Giants
Skins beat Eagles
Bears beat Rams
Minn beats Det
Green Bay beats 49'ers
TB beats Atlanta
Seattle beats Ariz.
Records after these games:
FINAL SPOT: Giants 6-7 Eagles 5-8 Vikes 6-7 Packers 6-7 Falcons 5-8 49'ers 5-8 Rams 6-7 SKINS 6-7
SOOOO, we are now tied with 4 teams for the final spot. Giants, Vikes, Packers and Rams. Let's assume the other teams at 5-8 are out of the race -- Eagles, Falcons, and 49'ers.
At this point, who do the 5 teams play:
Skins: 1)at NO 2)at St Louis 3)home vs Giants
Giants: 1)home vs phila 2)home vs NO 3)at Wash
Vikes: 1)home vs Jets 2)at GB 3) home vs St Louis
Packers: 1) home vs Det 2) home vs Minn 3) at Chicago
Rams: 1) at Oak 2) home vs Wash 3) at Minn
IF --
1. We run the table --- we get the final spot...
2. We lose one game (probably the NO game) --- we'll probably end up tied with one or more teams. Tiebreakers kick in and that's way too difficult to figure out at this point.

Excellent post.....thank you for taking the time to break it down.
I was just thinking the other day about how winning streaks in the NFL are not so much game by game, but series by series within games.
Our schedule the rest of the way is not scary at all to this team and coaching staff...who knows what may happen.

Actually, my "panties are bunched" either -- I was just trying to show that the final wildcard spot in the NFC is still wide open. Do any of the teams in question make you think it's over? Are any playing well enough now that make them a shoo-in? I don't believe so. While we beat the Panthers I do think they're a solid team and they do what playoffs teams do well -- run the ball and stop the run.
Gibbs is well known for getting his team on solid runs as a year ends. Don't know his overall December record but it's better than any other coach in the NFL today.
I also believe our team is better than they've played so far this year -- so, I sort of expect a run, maybe not 6 games in a row but 5-1 or 4-2 isn't out of the question with our schedule. Not having Portis and a healthy Moss will make it difficult though.
If we were to somehow make that final spot, do I see us having any chance in the NFC side of the playoffs? Without a doubt. All of the NFC teams seem to have something wrong with them. Playing in Chicago in Janurary could be a problem but the Bears offense isn't too scary. Their defense is super good.
Anyway, someone has to be the optimist around here -- let's gas up the Bandwagon guys!

I didn't know you wore 'em, JH.

I don't see playoffs this year. There's too much going on, and it's too much to ask of this team right now. I'd prefer they played the game without that pressure. Let Campbell continue to develop, beat the crap out of opposing lines with the Duckett/Betts/Sellers combo...and I hope they don't spend too much time watching the ATL scoreboard.
I'm sure they will, anyway...but I just want to see more games like last week where everybody just did their jobs and won.

You're right....the playoffs are possible....but I doubt it. This scenario of yours also makes lloking back at the Minn., Tenn., and Tampa games that much worse. Minnesota looked decent against us, but to lose to Tenn at home was inexcusable. Tampa's loss only has merit to being on the road and Campbell's first start. We really should've won that one too. Make those two games wins, then look where we SHOULD be. Thanks a lot Brunell and Defense.

You mention Minnesota and TB then dismiss them, I agree we could have won a game or two but the Titans have beat everyone in the div. (minus TtiT) and have lost to some pretty good teams so their record is mis-leading, I'm still pissed about the Colts game
