Looking ahead: free agents, draft picks and cap space
I apologize if this is posted somewhere else. Three questions:
1) Can anyone share with me what draft picks we do have left for next year?
2) How much cap room we will have? What's our cap picture look like?
3) Also, does anyone have any insight as to any current Redskin players who could become a free agent and/or RFA?
Again, I apologize if this information is easily accessible somewhere else on the site.

From what I've read here recently:
1) This is a trick question. If we have any, they're almost certainly gone, in exchange for some yet to be determined veteran.
2) Acoording to the experts in the media, next year, our cap, as well as all our capologists will spontaneously combust. So it's not worth discussing.
3) I hear Brunell might be available.

1) I am most curious about the status of the Redskins' 1st round pick as it stands today. I think we might have to swap picks with Denver, but I don't know the details. Anyone know the status?
2) THN has an excellent section on the salary cap. It explains our cap situation in great detail...check it out. http://www.the-hogs.net/html/Team/salary.php
3) The cap section shows the player under contract for next year. This might help a little with free agent info.

If the Redskins' pick is in the first 20 of the first round based on record, there's no swap.

Every year everyone screams that the Skins are in Cap Hell - yet they are continually able to sign guys. They will do what they always do - spend money, sign free agents and buy guys out next year.
Gibbs (mostly B Beatherd) built 3 Superbowl teams through Free Agency, of course its a diff. era and he had like 1 1st round pick in a decade - so it can be done with free agency... you just have to have a good GM to get you there, and pick the right guys.

I'd like to see us trade some players for draft picks...this team has had success in the draft When we actually draft people....
ey was a STEAL in the 3rd round.
I'd love to squeeze a 4th round pick out of Archuletta, or a late round pick for another player.

Who in their right mind would trade a draft pick, let alone one as high as a 4th rounder, for AA and his bloated contract?
Too bad we can't trade with ourselves; I bet the Skins would make that trade

Yeah, you're right. No one would do that...but one could hope. Whats funny though is that if another team had him right now...we'd gladly sling a 3rd or 4th rounder in a trade to get him. Which leads me to the conclusion that only we are dumb enough to do something like that.

Thanks RedskinsFreak. Looks like there won't be a swap. And, any more losses won't hurt as bad knowing our draft position improves......yes, I hate losing more than antything but I have to try to find a positive.

Thanks for all of the great info! I really appreciate it:
1) I wonder if we won't able to end up in the Brady Quinn sweepstakes? I know that might sound crazy since we have Jason Campbell, but if we were in a position to get Brady Quinn, we would have to take him wouldn't we? ...I didn't realize we gave away our second to move up last year to pick up Rocky.
2) I can't believe we would only have $600k in dead cap projected for 2007. I guess a lot of that depends on what we do with Brunell, Patten, Samuels, and Jansen after this season. Does anyone else think that maybe Jansen won't be here next year? I couldn't imagine us taking a huge cap hit to release Adam Archuletta. ...but then I'm no capologist.
3) I think in that whole list of FA's, the only ones that draw my attention are Betts, Dockery (although I don't think he's been as good this year as last year), Molinaro (as a quality back-up), Holdman (who I think has played better this year than last year, and Duckett (depending on what happens to Ladell). I think everyone else on that list is very much replaceable.

Jansen and Samuels aren't going anywhere. AA could be gone without killing the cap and mostlikely will be. Brunell will be gone, too.

NO! First of all, we've already got a young QB we've not even tried out yet, so QB is not even a true need with this team. Let's give JC a year or more before we start shopping for his replacement. We've got many other needs (both sides of the line, secondary, etc.) which are far more important right now.
Second, what's the big deal with Quinn? I don't follow the college game that much, but is he even the consensus best QB coming out this year? What about Troy Smith from Ohio State? Brady is benefiting from a very good coach (Charlie Weiss), but has he really distinguished himself as THE premier QB this year? I think he'll certainly be a first rounder, but he doesn't appear to be a 'once-in-a-decade' player any team would be foolish to pass on.

Thanks as always for being the source on all things draft and cap related. Regarding the 3rd rounder, that's essentially Denver's, right?

It all depends on how both teams finish the year and where the drafts picks stand on this "value chart"
Basically, we could end swapping first-round picks in 2007; or we could flop first-rounders and the Broncos would also get a fourth-round pick in 2008; or they could flop firsts and the Broncos get a third in 2007; or the Broncos could end up with a third in 2007 and a fourth in 2008 (the Redskins do not have a fourth-round pick in 2007).
The pick will be equivalent to what the value chart shows for a "high third-round pick" and the various possible first-round swaps would come into play if there is a big discrepancy in where the team's finish, and how high their picks are in each round.
If the season ended today or both teams continue to play as they have we would not swap (we finish with a high pick and Denver with a low one). If we finish with the 17-18 pick and Denver has about the 28th we'd swap and be done.
To be honest I'm not even sure we have a third this year but I can't remember what happen to it so I listed it. The deal appeared to be structured with the Skins looking to have a better record than the Broncs this year (which brought in the 2008 4th rounder).

I hope we get rid of Arch and Holdman:
We could use guys like: Matt Schaub, He's the perfect kind of QB that can run Saunders offense, and Brunell will be outta here, these days you need two capable QB's and who knows, he may just be ready to play, (no offense to Campbell).
Asante Samuel: 25 year old Stud Cornerback. Sorry Rogers, you might be a better Nickle DB right now.
Leonard Little: He's a beast and Wynn is getting older.
Adalius Thomas: Lemar Marshall should move back to weak side and compete with Rocky.....Thomas had 86 total tackles, nine sacks, and a returned touchdown on one of his two interceptions...when he replaced Ray Lewis at Middle Linebacker.
Max Starks: Jansen just doesn't cut it .
Dwayne Carswell: Dockery is an UFA and he's not worth any more money than he gets.

I know we have many holes to fill, but I like the idea of getting someone flashy. Maybe a defensive lineman, or linebacker.
If no appropriately skilled player is available a trade might be nice too.
The way I see it, Gregg Williams does well finding no name guys who fit perfectly into his scheme... it's his trademark.
Why not go after nice vets to fill the roles and get a little star power if we can.
