The Redskins have re-signed tight end Brian Kozlowski, the team announced on Wednesday. Kozlowski is an experienced veteran who has had stints with the Redskins each of the last two seasons.

Kozlowski takes the roster spot of running back Clinton Portis, who was placed on injured reserve on Wednesday. The 6-3 and 265-pounder has played 12 seasons in the NFL as a tight end and special teams contributor.

With tight end Christian Fauria slowed by an ankle injury, Kozlowski should be able to step right in, head coach Joe Gibbs said. Fauria is listed as questionable.

With Christian hurt, we were real thin [at tight end]," Gibbs said. "Plus I think he adds a lot from a chemistry standpoint. He's a high-quality guy and a smart football player. He's somebody who can jump right in there and help us right away. Really, he could play both positions, the [fullback] and the tight end."

Last year, he appeared in all 16 games for the Redskins and logged two receptions for 26 yards. He posted one special teams tackle and also served as a blocker on field goals and punts.

In 2004, Kozlowski appeared in 11 games for the Redskins, with one start, and contributed three catches for 29 yards.

Kozlowski entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the New York Giants in 1993. He played his first three years with the Giants and then seven with the Atlanta Falcons, where he was tutored by Redskins tight ends coach Rennie Simmons.

During his career, Kozlowski has started 29 games and appeared in 176. He has posted 83 catches for 972 yards and eight touchdowns.

He had his most productive season with the Falcons in 2001 when he had 15 catches for 270 yards and one touchdown. At the University of Connecticut, Kozlowski started 43 straight games. He finished his senior season with 43 catches for 526 yards and a touchdown.
