a few thoughts

Post by CcHhDd »

wow, this season is going downhill fast

first off i would just like to say to all the defensive bashers, wait until the game against tampa and see if they improve. Maybe benching brunell will help give the defense some more confidence in our offense. Right now it seems like they don't have the fire they had the previous two years. Hopefully they can get that back.

Just a few things to note though. More than likely our season is done with. So we should start looking towards next year. Or I guess I should really say last year. We need to find out what went wrong this year and why it changed from the year before. The biggest change I see comes from one side of our defense. Andre Carter, Warrick Holdman, and AA.

Last year our defense was strong because we stopped the run on 1st and 2nd down, and were able to blitz heavily on third down due to our strenght at corner. This year we're getting run on... which means the safeties have to come up for more support, and then we're getting beat deep. And who are all these teams running right at? Carter and Holdman. We all new last year Holdman was horrible in run support. So this year we added a guy in front of him that bull rushes right past the running back. So in order to fix this... something I think we should do all along... is to put back in renaldo wynn. Sure he doesn't get you many sacks, but he can stop the run. I know its a year later.. two years by the start of next season... so its a question if he's still got it anymore. But we need to fix our run defense first and foremost.

Secondly, our defense was strong because we had two very good corners that allowed us to blitz often. This year that's not so much the case. I know shawn springs has been hurt but he doesn't look like the same player. Last year I would have put him in the top three at the cornerback position. This year I certainly wouldn't. And he's not getting any younger either. I think what we should do is save his career and maybe see if he can make it at the FS position. He has pretty good size for the position... although his tackling might not be up to par. This would allow us to shift Sean Taylor to SS fulltime (he plays either position depending on whether vincent or aa is in) And with our #1 draft pick next year (if we still have it) we should definately address the cb spot.

Now to the offense. I really wish I could sit down with joe gibbs and have lunch one day. If I had that chance i'd ask him why he even brought in al saunders. Don't get me wrong, I believe al saunders is a genious on offense and what is going on here is certainly not his fault. I also can't wait to see what he does with a stronger armed jason c at qb.

But I really would like to ask gibbs why he would change a good offense from the year before from a 10-6 team. Sure we struggled bad in the playoff games. But the problem wasn't the scheme, it was the personel. We didn't have anyone to play opposite Moss. I truely think that had we kept the same scheme from last year, and just added our new players on offense, we'd have a better record. Not a great one cause our d has holes, but a better one cause at least the defense would play a little inspired.

This year it seems as though we're not running the ball consistently. Sure we get the rb's enough carries, but it just seems like the flow of the offense isn't centered around the rushing game. That is what made us great last year and carried us to the playoffs. Not the pass plays. Plus this year it seems as though our biggest pieces from last year are not even being used. Cooley and Sellers, guys nobody would pay attention to last year ... have got al saunders doing the same to them this year. If we ever needed to use them it would be now. Shoot we have 3 wr's that have a lot of talent. I'm sure cooley could sneak into the flat and just sit there if we ran the 3 deep. I'm just mad that we totally changed a winning way of football. And it starts with joe gibbs. He's a hall of famer, not Al saunders. Nothing against al saunders, he's great as mentioned before. But i have always felt that winning football is played through tough running and mistake free football with a dominating defense. I hate teams that air it out and get into scoring battles. Yea it looks great during the year but it breaks down come playoffs when the weather turns and players get tired. I have always liked gibbs' way of football cause it wins come playoff time. I just wish we'd go back to it.

This season is almost through with... but hopefully we can go back to what we were doing before.

With all the injuries and new faces, I don't thing they had time to gel. In the off-season I stated I didn't think it was a lot of turn over but as players went down and new ones were brought in, it may have made a big difference.

Somebody might still be pleasantly surprised this season.

Why would we not wait to see Ducket as a Gibbs style power-runner and Campbell a good passer play next Sunday before passing judgment about the death of the Skins this season? Let's look ahead one game at a time as Joe asked in his interview. For good and bad, we play our season each week from now on. Keep the faith for this team to find its way this season with a view to next season as you correctly point out.
Daniel Snyder has defined incompetence, failure and greed to true Washington Redskins fans for over a decade and a half. Stay away from football operations !!!

9-7 might make the play-offs. But I'm not even thinking playoff at this point 8-8 would be nice. I just want to see Redskin football again

Anything can happen. Jason might provide a spark that energizes the whole team. If he can get the ball downfield, the offense might actually make some big plays and inspire everyone. Let's take it one game at a time and see how it plays out.

I will be VERY happy if the skins can spoil someone else's playoff hopes (Philly mainly).

Alot has changed this year. The D-front are all injured in some capacity. I like AA but now it seems it was a bad fit. The QB can't throw anything longer then 10yrds, can't scramble, and last year if everyone remembers the winning streak started when Gibbs started having Brunell roll out of the pocket to buy more time to see down field. Brunell has not rolled out alot this year. He is a deer caught in the head lights in the pocket. Portis lost several pounds in order to be a faster back, and because of this he is not heavy enough to slam it in this year. Every year I ask what the WR are doing. or what is the Coach teaching them? They seem to not be able to break free. What moves are the coaches teaching them to use in order to confuse the CB and allow them to get open. Even Moss is having difficulty getting open this yr. Now the O-line. I'm betting that when Al Saunders was brought in with his 700 pg play book no one expected that the O-line would be this bad. Why would they? They have an O-line Coach which is well known in the NFL for teaching lineman to get the job done. Perhaps Al's blocking schemes are not the same type blocking schemes we had last year. Perhaps the O-line coach does not believe in it and is having to sell it to the O-line. Perhaps the O-line is having difficulty learning or remembering who to block on what play. I keep hearing how on each play different O-lineman are screwing up on each play....this is a huge indication that the O-line does not get the blocking scheme that is being used. We can either finish the year knowing this is going to be an on going problem until they get the scheme (which I wonder how long it took KC to get it) or perhaps go back to the old blocking scheme and find a way to incorperate Al's offense into it.

I am ready to see TJ finally in a real game scenario. CP should just rest the remainder of the year and let his body heal.

Ideally I would like TJ to roll like he is capable of. This guy still has a lot of football years left in him with very little wear on his body. He is a bruising back, a true Joe Gibbs style of power back.

As much as I like Ladell I would like to see him do really well the remainder of the season to get his value up and then we trade him for some draft picks in the offseason and try to keep TJ.

Can you imagine the combo of CP and TJ next year? A slasher and a bruiser.

I am as glad as anyone to see Jason Campbell in as the quarterback. I hope he does well.

TIC (Tongue In Cheek)

But I keep having this nagging feeling that the same scenario happened a year or so ago and the "new" quarterback was yanked in the first game of the next year and Brunell was back in.

Maybe it is just a re-occuring nightmare.

I feel the same way but my rational side of my mind says Gibbs will stick with him through the rest of the season. I'd really like to see us whip the Giants and Eagels and get ready for next year. I would like to see NOT ONE free agent added this year.

Dunno why anyone would trade draft picks for him after this year.

He's a free agent (so is Duckett).

I doubt TJ would come back to the Skins. He wants to start. In Washington, any RB who comes in will be second fiddle to Portis.

We kinda need Free Agents, because we have literally no draft picks.

And we have holes. CB, backups on the O-line (most importantly tackle), d-line, linebacker, safety.

Wow, I just mentioned the whole defense, didn't I?

You kinda wish they would just 'bite the bullet' one year and take a very minimalist approach to shopping at Football 'R' Us.

FIRST of all we are not out of the playoff hunt. If you are a real student of the game you will see that all the team are around 500. also all of the team has to play each other to finish up the season as a true redskins fan I still have hopes of making the playoff. This is my vision of the remaining game. we will protect jason by the running game with alot of T J duckett and a splast of ladell betts TJ is getting ready to earn his money. also there will be alot of downfield play to loose the defence up to make more room for the run to work. KEEP THE FAITH TRUE REDSKINS FANS.

true we are not out of the playoff hunt but we have a horrible division record and a bad conference record. Even if we do get things back up to the level of the other NFC teams we lose out on tiebreakers. Its pretty much like last year, 7 in a row or we don't go.

As for everyone touting the great TJ ducket. He sat on atlanta's bench for a reason. We should really give betts the respect he deserves. He has put up great numbers this year while stepping in for CP. If you ask me i'd rather have a guy that can replace our number 1, not someone who you only use once in a while to get a yard or two.

I wish it tremendously. Stop trading draft picks. Those 3rd and 4th rounders we give away, they actually turn out to be useful depth players at the least.
