I met up with him and after he insisted that I needed to tie one on before I saw what he had, it was finally presented to me. Yellowed from age and brittle to the touch, he handed it to me and said "Wait to you see what the hell I came across". I opened it up carefully and at the top read " Boston Post Thursday December 9th 1937. I glanced down and about had a corinary. The Title that caught my eye first read ..." Bears Prepare For Redskins---- National Pro Title at Stake in Sunday's Game " I started to read and it went on about Slingin Sammy Baugh.
I have the article in front of me now and I'll share a piece or two from it:
The Burly Chicago Bears, champions of the Western Division of the National Professional Football league, laid extensive battle plans for tonight for theirtitle game against the Washington Redskins, Sunday.
The major problem was Slingin' Sammy Baughh, the Rookie Redskin who stepped out of Texas Christian as the greatest college forward passer in the country and became the star of the pros in a single season.
Another was Cliff Battles, nifftiest running back in the league. Battles gained more than half the total Redskins yardage this year.
"We've got to stop those two boys or the Bears are sunk," said Owner-Coach George Halas.
"Baugh helped pass the Redskins to a league record this year, and Battles tore off more yardage than any other running back. The Bears, on the other hand have the finest defensive record, so there you have it."
A sell out crowd of 44,000 likely will watch the two divsional champions at Wrigley field despite the bitter cold sweeping toward Chicago.
I was stunned when I received this. To this day I cherish the old brittle newspaper. I was shocked that the Bears played at Wrigley back then, and how Halas was nervous about Baugh and Battles. Dana and I figured that his grandfather had them before they moved into their apartment or someone else had them there and he too took pleasure in them. Either way other than my 2 beautiful children, its the best gift I've ever received.
I figured I'd have my 200 posting be about this little story I thaught some of ya would enjoy. The prices on here for Real Estate and vehicles is crazy. To think how much things have changed over the years is truely amazing. There is also a piece on how Joe Dimaggio was voted AP's Sportmen of the year. I thaught that was cool too although it would have ment more if it was about Dom, his brother, seeing that he played for my beloved Red Sox back then.
This is a great site and I don't know if I'll match my 200 posts/ in a week again, but I really enjoy talking with all of you and sharing our views on the Redskins nation and football in general. I am honored to be a part of "the Hogs.Net".
