McMVP: I posted this a few weeks back, but this should answer your question vis-a-vis Denver's o-line versus the Skins:
Last year, Portis carried the ball 290 times on a team that had no passing game to speak of (they used three different quarterbacks) so even if the offensive line deserves a hunk of the credit, Portis did the bulk of the work. This is especially salient when you consider the Broncos only topped 100 yards rushing once in the 4 games Portis missed at that was against the Colts who are 20th in the NFL against the run. He was their offense and their opponents knew that.
Without Portis the Broncos failed to top 100 yards against Oakland, the league's worst rushing defense last year. Any back averaging 5.5 yards a carry is rushing behind a good line but it wasn't too long ago that the Redskins offensive line was pretty good at run blocking, something they did not do much of last year.
Denver also scored the third most rushing TDs in the NFL (20) with 14 of those coming from Portis. This from a team that scored 39 touchdowns altogether. So he accounted for more than a third of their touchdowns despite essentially missing 4 games.
And he only fumbled the ball 3 times in 290 carries, making him one of only 4 backs with more than 280 carries to drop the ball 3 times or less. His yards per game were second in the league to Jamal Lewis who also had 2 games against Cleveland (23rd) and Cincinnati (25th) as well as playing Kansas City, San Diego and Oakland (teams Portis also faced).
Also, if we assume Portis stays healthy all year, not totally unreasonable, and we assume he gets 20 carries a game, and that is conservative, and we factor in a full yard per carry loss in his average, which is rather steep, he would run for 1,440 yards, which would have made him no. 8 in the NFL last year, a mere 4 yards behind Stephen Davis. If you bump the carries per game to 25, again, not unreasonable given Gibbs' coaching style, keeping with the diminished yards-per-carry estimation, Portis totals 1,800 yards, making him third in the NFL and 2nd in the NFC, both by very comfortable margins.
Quentin Griffin ran the ball 94 times for 345 yards (a 3.7 per carry average), scored zero touchdowns and fumbled three times. Which is to say he fumbled as many times in 94 attempts as Portis did in 290. Griffin's numbers should have been somewhat better if the Denver O-line deserved as much of the credit as it is being given.
Another point in regard to Denver's vaunted offensive line. In 1999, Olandis Gary ran the ball 276 times for 1,159 yards, a 4.2 per carry average, putting him on par with (drum roll) Trung Canidate. He only scored seven rushing touchdowns in 12 games. Those numbers are not spectacular by any means. Mike Anderson's numbers the following year were much more impressive: 297 touches for 1,487 yards and 15 touchdowns. However, the next year, despite 175 carries he managed only 678 yards (3.9 per carry) and four touchdowns. In fact, if you throw out his long run of 62 yards, his average drops to 3.5 per carry. Why such a steep drop off? All Gary's numbers prove is the Broncos didn't abandon the running game that season. In fact, if he had an equivalent number of touches in Detroit (where he is the back-up) he would post numbers very similar to those he posted in Denver. So, aside from Anderson's one good season, what has the Denver O-line done to deserve such heady praise? Denver's O-line is good but not that good.

I was under the assumption that as long as Synder was the owner of the Skins...he would spend and spend and spend....but still get nowhere. He always had to have his hands in the kitchen screwing up the coach's recipe.

But now with Gibbs back I don't think that will be the case. Snyder is still spending like crazy, but now for players that a 'proven' leader wants.

Congrats on getting Gibbs back....you guys hve to be thrilled! It's a different game today than it was when he was around before (salary cap/FA). But I'm sure Gibbs can handle it as good (if not better) than most. He's a winner...and as classy as they come....

Dont pump these Redskins heads up to much.....Oline appears to be good on PAPER.....but only time will tell if Ole Bugel...will be able to keep up with these young, creative schemes that are in the NFL now. I still am not sold on Ole Brunell IMO his best days have passed...

He IS on the decline, but Brunell will probably put up better #'s then half the QB's in the league. By the way, who's the starting QB in Dallas this year? Quincy.

YEAH GOOD OLE QC the QB that took us to 10-6....You guys did see what he did in his first year under Parcells and Payton right...Just think of how much better he will be in his second straight year ....umm i think Brunell got beat out by Leftwhich....what was that about...but to play devils advocate....Brunell probally would have been cut anyway due to salary and the Jags wanting to get younger......but there is no way he should have gotten that much money and you guys gave up a HIGH 3rd round pick.....

I don't think you can credit QC for your 10-6 record. I think Dallas's defense is the reason for that. Plus the Redskins messed up coaching last year and the instability in NY helped that record also.

No the Eagle guy had it right Parcells, Gibbs, Reid, Coughlin

The reason behind this is Parcells has done it with 4 differnt franchise and 4 differnt mangement teams. Gibbs sucess so far has been with one team, one owner, pre free agency and salary cap era.

Gibbs did it with three different QBs and RBs. Plus Gibbs built his own teams. Parcells, like I stated in the smack room, went to losing teams that were almost done rebuilding that had high draft picks the year he arrived. I don't know of any time when Parcells went to a team and completely built it himself and taking a team of losers and making them winners. I'm not saying he's never added players he wanted to the roster, I'm saying he never had a team that he built from scratch.

Did you see what happened in the playoffs when he faced a real team? Do you really think QC can take Dallas to a superbowl? Dallas' defense made QC alot better then he really is. He had a decent year, but if you had someone like Brunell, you guy's would have done alot better. By the way, Brunell DIDN'T get beat out, he got hurt. After he was better they stuck with Leftwich so he can get experience. It didn't matter who was QB in Jacksonville, there D was so bad the season was a wrap anyway. I'll take Brunell over Quincy, Chad or Drew anytime.
