Samuels?
Samuels name has been bounced around quite often lately in a lot of postings on here. It has drawn a lot of intrest from me, because one of the latest issues was rather he was a "core" player or not. My opinion is that he is most certainly a core player. Is his salary crazy?Absolutely ....Did he have an off year? For his standards, yes! For some others, no. Do I think he'll be a Redskin in 5 years from now? I sure the hell hope so. Will we be able to afford him?, Doesn't look good. Will he renogiate or take a "hometown" discount? Who knows.
Samuels is gonna blossom under Bugel and the new look offense. As long as he can continue to stay healthy he will be someone we don't want to lose whatsoever. There is a fine line with athletes today on whether its money they play for or desire to win a championship where they started, or where they feel they can win. With Gibbs coming back into the big picture I forsee a lot better chance of him (Chris) staying here for a long time, rather than keep switching coaches on him. He IS defenitely a "core" player that we can't afford to lose or keep if he demands to stand his ground on his contract or want more come 2008. Gibbs is all about instoring tradition and keeping the core players intact, yet he has never faced the cap until now. Samuels is a testament to our offense and I hope that we can keep him, yet he's gotta want to keep his ties as well for a "reasonable price". Rumors will fly til he either renigotiates, gets released, traded, or signs a new contract that's just how it is with the higher payed players and especially the higher payed players we want to keep intact for years to come.

At this moment Samuels is giving Bugel a Grizzley Bear hug at Redskin Park.
They are both giddy to work with each other and Samuels will be back to his true ProBowl form...
Now, can Jansen please get the respect he deserves? I am tired of Jansen being underrated!!!!! Jansen has skills and character.

I also see this happening, but maybe the cap goes up and we can keep him. He is a great guy and that counts for something. There is something to be said about players in this day and age that conduct themselves like Lavernues Coles and Chris is one of those guys.

I would normally agree with you KK... but I just feel like he didn't perform anywhere near his potential last year - even with the bad schemes.
I do believe that if he doesn't move up in his effort and performance with Bugel as the line coach he isn't worth the money.

No player is worth 10m a year to me. I wasnt saying just pay him based on his character, but better yet I'll give him a chance to earn his salary. I like Winey a lot and was hoping that Bailey and LaVar were the ones to stay and now it seems like we will lose two our three big name guys.

Winey, IMO, outplayed Samuels last year. I didn't worry about him once I saw how he could handle himself. He only allowed one sack. He did very well run blocking.
I would rather pay him 2 mil a year and bring in another new guy from a future draft.

He is been quite cordial to me since I am the one that started all this Samuels bashing...just cant see giving a guy that kind of money. There is only a handful of left tackles I would pay 10m a season and Chris has not played at that level yet.

i wouldn't actually call it bashing kk, more like a dose of reality. i completly agree with you. you aren't saying anything negative, just the facts on chris and the cap..... although it is hard to swallow.kkryan wrote:skinsfaninroanoke wrote:Of course - Jake isn't home to run over and pound on my head yet - which is why I felt safe enough to post this

I know, but it is hard to make these kind of judgements. All teams have to make these choices. How do you think Dallas fans felt when Emmitt was cut or maybe how would it feel for us to have cut Mr. Redskin??? That is a sickening thought

Guys, Chris has a 10 mil signing bonus.
He made only $625K last year! that's not even close to 10 million! He's going to make $5.132M this year.
So when it comes to the cap, it doesn't matter. Nothing involving Chris should even be an issue right now.
SFIR, I don't pound people in the head, so I'll just let Chris do it for me!

His salary was cheap last year because he renegogtiated. 5.132 is his base salary, need to tack on the proration of his signing bonus.

Agreed, I dont even wanna think about losing Samuels.
Sunday's ain't the same, without no football.
Well, even w/ the SB, it's not fair to exagerate that he makes 10 mil a year when he he makes less than half of that.

well i think that the skins need to cut samuels or trade him.he's just not worth the cap number anymore.he's played like he had his head up his rear end the last two years anyways.

I don't understand why you would let a 3-time Pro Bowler leave. He had a few mental mistakes last season but those are easy to work on and his work ethic will show his improvement.

In spite of last year, he's a quality person and seems to be a good person. I think big Chris will fit in nicely on a Joe Gibbs team. Hopefully they can get the money situation worked out to keep him around for a while.

I like Chris but I think that Bugel and Gibbs will groom a replacement this year or next. Winey did seem to do well when he was in. I think they will prepare the team to be without him in a couple of years since the renegotiating this year doesn't seem to be moving along. I just hope we get something for him.

LOL Jake - I just feel like I am being realistic - if he makes 10 mil + in a couple of years and doesn't perform to that level... goodbye...
I cheer the team, not the players individually - callous, maybe, but considering the way the league is going with this salary cap I would quit getting so attached personally to these guys buddy... you are gonna be in for major disappointments every year...

Im a big fan of Chris and hope he can once again live up to his expectations as a dominate Left Tackle. But if its in the best interest of the team (AFTER HE GETS A LEGITIMATE SHOT WITH BUGEL AND GIBBS) to let him go and we can come out better in the long run, then I say do it. The big man has to perform, or he'll simply be replaced. I hope he works out.

if he becomes dominant - I support him. If he stays at the same level - I want to boot him. The leech like nature of some of these big contracts for players not playing up to their prime is horrible for the health of the entire team.
I agree that he should get a shot. I think he should be scrutinized over this year. If he remains a huge weakness - buh bye. If not, if he steps up... great - work it out somehow.
That has always been my belief - it is why I argued against Champ staying - he didn't do well, and I don't really believe his heart would have been in it had he stayed...

Yeah Champ's whole "hollier than thou" attitude did me in too and Portis helped me forget about the loss. I will miss Champ and I sincerely wish him luck ....at least the guy was honest with us. As for Samuels, the man can be absolutely dominating when he wants to. If he left because he just didn't pan out he'll be remebered IMO that " this guy had a lot of potential and something just didn't work or stay consistent" Yet I really feel he's gonna pull it out and get back on track. I believe we picked him 3rd for a reason that year, and he'll need to reassure quite a few of us.
