ESPN has the story on it (thanks to SkinsFan55 for pointing it out).

Could there be trouble in Ashburn, or is this a smoke screen???

For some reason, this quote just jumps out at me:

"I thought it was a game-time decision," he said. "As of now, my bag's packed and ready to go to Dallas, unless they come and tap me on the shoulder in the near future and tell me I ain't going." -- CP

It sounds to me that THAT's what Joe is trying to avoid down in Dallas. One "tap" could put him at risk to miss more of the season.

This is ridiculous. I think EPSN is looking for another journalist that jumps to conclusions if you're interested. :-P

He did not say he is OUT, Gibbs did not say he is OUT! Read the article before believing some jaded writers perception of what's going on.

Gibbs: Portis will not play against Cowboys Click here to find out more!
NFL.com wire reports

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) - Washington Redskins coach Joe Gibbs ruled Clinton Portis out for the game against the Dallas Cowboys, an announcement that surprised Portis and created yet another bizarre twist in the running back's injury saga.

"He didn't practice today. ... If a guy doesn't practice, he's not going to play," Gibbs said.

Gibbs said Ladell Betts, T.J. Duckett and Rock Cartwright will be the running backs against the Cowboys. Portis was downgraded from questionable to doubtful on the injury report, with Gibbs citing soreness from the pounding Portis took from playing in the season opener against Minnesota on Monday night.

"It's really just because of soreness," Gibbs said.

"Actually, it's in a different spot in his shoulder. He's got some soreness there that lingered and kept him from practicing this week."

When told what Gibbs had said, Portis was taken back.

"I didn't know the decision had been made," Portis said. "I thought it was a game-time decision. As of now, my bag's packed and ready to go to Dallas, unless they come and tap me on the shoulder in the near future and tell me I ain't going."

Last week, the story was just the opposite. Portis spent several days downplaying his chances to make the season opener, saying he was not in football shape and had yet to recover from a partially dislocated left shoulder that cause him to miss nearly all of preseason. Gibbs then sprung a surprise after the final practice, saying that Portis had tested the shoulder sufficiently and would play as a backup to Betts.

Portis carried 10 times for 39 yards in the 19-16 loss to the Vikings, but he has complained of soreness all week.

"I can't do nothing but tell you to wait until Sunday. This bag is going to Dallas," said Portis, pointing at the equipment bag in front of his locker. "We have seen some miracle days happen. This ain't no situation for me not to be playing in."

As usual, Portis wavered from serious to playful, making it difficult to discern whether he really feels that he can play. At one point, he said: "I eat gunpowder twice a day now. As long as I'm on this gunpowder, I think I'm going to be all right."

Portis took a more serious tone when he expressed frustration over the week-to-week soap opera that his injury has become.

"I'll be happy when I'm healthy," Portis said. "Hopefully we can get this over with real soon and I can join my teammates and be on the field and it's not an issue. I don't like this being an issue going into the weekend. Am I up or down? Playing or not? Whatever's best for the team."

Portis wore pads and said he "ran a few routes" during practice, but that apparently wasn't enough for the coach.

"He'll probably tell me he can play on game day, but he didn't practice so we'll move him down accordingly," Gibbs said. "Hopefully he's going to be back next week, That would be my hope."

Not really sure why Gibbs would prnounce Portis out for the game without telling him first. Looks like a communications breakdown.

To follow up NikiH's post, here's what Joe ACTUALLY said:
Asked if he was ruling Portis out for Sunday's game, Gibbs replied: "Well, I think if a guy doesn't practice, he's not going to play. So we'll downgrade him."

So obviously Gibbs doesn't know what he's saying so how about we just wait till Sunday? I mean if he's not sure, nobody is.

At the very best this is CP and Gibbs scheming to blow smoke, half truths and innuendo in an effort to gain an edge.

At the worst, CP is really hurt AND we have a potential problem brewing btwn coach and player.

I have no idea which of these or where in between the truth lies, but I don't like any of it, I can tell you that much.

I hate to say it but that is what it sounds like. Hopefully it was just a miscommunication between Gibbs and Portis.

That's not Redskin.com is reporting.

Gibbs did say...
"It's really just because of soreness,"

but went on to say...
"He hasn't been able to get the soreness out of there. It's kept him from practicing, so we'll downgrade him."

He was listed as questionable and was downgraded to doubtful

When Gibbs was pressed if he was ruling Portis out, he said...
"Well, I think if a guy doesn't practice, he's not going to play. So we'll downgrade him

Didn't we find out last week that CP had praticed when the world was reporting that he hadn't?

That's true. But last week Portis and Gibbs at least appeared to be on the same page. This week not so much.

I'm sure it isn't a big deal. Gibbs sees the big picture; Portis is just chomping at the bit to play. Let's not freak out. Besides, Gibbs is great at handling players and personalities, and Portis has been a solid team guy since he's been here. I'm sure there won't be an issue.

THe first thing that popped in my head was the Arrington situation from last year...you know Arrington saying he's healthy, coaches claiming he's not...I think that's how it went down. Anyway, I hope Gibbs gets it straightened out, the team can't afford this distraction.

What the team can't afford is not having CP.

I saw Joe's comments and he didn't say Portis was "OUT" for the game, he did say if a guy doesn't practice then he doesn't play, but Portis has 2 more days to "practice" and I think it's hilarious how the media is setting it up to bash Gibbs when Portis does play...I mean they've misquoted him on Nfl.com, NFL Network, ESPN, and the dallas cowpuke website (who sound like they are going to be like children going "but you said he wouldnt play, you lied...." no see dallas Gibbs don't lie, he's ambig u ous but he doesnt lie See You Sun Night

Read on redskins.com where Portis points to his bag full of pads and says "all I know is that bag is going to Dallas"

I'm just curious... to those that seek to indite CP here... how do you know who's decision it was for CP NOT to practice. As in... was it CP's decision... Bubba tyer's... Earnest byner's... Joe gibbs'

And if you don't know the answer... how can you possibly judge the entire situation?

He was downgraded to DOUBTFUL... not to OUT.. that means that as far as the league is concerned... the Redskins have not broken any rules if CP now all of a sudden plays on Sunday night. That means that the Cowboys have spent the last few days trying to figure out if they have to game plan for CP or for Duckett/Betts.

... and further to that, to slag a guy that IN THE SAME PRESS CONFERENCE that he himself found out that he might not be playing, he showed the poise and class that you hope and expect that your veterans will display:

"I'll be happy when I'm healthy," Portis said. "Hopefully we can get this over with real soon and I can join my teammates and be on the field and it's not an issue. I don't like this being an issue going into the weekend. Am I up or down? Playing or not? Whatever's best for the team."

I'd take 52 more Clinton Portis' if we could find them.

My 2 cents
Sean Taylor was one of a kind, may he rest in peace.

Isn't that the truth! Portis is a warrior for our team. . .always giving 110%, never complaining, always a leader, always poised.
