He had about a 76 passer rating and less than 6 yrds per attempt. That's good if you like to experience your playoffs from your living room. All Brunell did was make Brad Johnson look good, and unlike Johnson, Brunell didn't have a bunch of his dropped.
It seemed to me he was executing the plays that were called. Now, admittedly, I'm not football tactition....so I'll leave up to you guys that know the ins and outs and intricacies of the offense....but, from my lay perspective....he looked pretty good running what was called.
Is "throw it out of bounds again" an actual play?
They didn't show the whole field on TV enough to know if any of the receivers were going on deep routes, but I can't believe these silly little short passes were all Saunders was calling. I know KC aired it out more than this when he was there. B. Johnson had one less completion and 60 more yards, and some of his long balls were flat-out dropped by his WRs.
- defense looked good except on 3rd down. It was very frustrating that we couldn't stop them on 3rd down.
- offense looked good at times but not nearly consistent enough
- not enough shots downfield on offense and that kind of surprised me (possibly related to the OL not being able to provide any protection?)
- special teams are still a liability and with the "age of parity" in the NFL, a lot of games are going to be determined by special teams play. This needs to be fixed as soon as possible. Probably my main concern at the moment.
- what happened to our OL? It seemed just like preseason. An open door to the QB.
I have to say that I'm sad but not distrought. It is week 1. We showed some good things. Had Randel El picked up the first down and we moved the ball 5 more yards, we probably would be in OT right now. Dallas, and NY lost yesterday so the season isn't over.
Everything from here on out tonight is crying over spilt milk, and the team - on both sides of the ball - spilled a lot of it tonight. Skins have a lot of work to do to get ready for the C-Pukes next Sunday, but that is what is good at this point in the season, there still is a next week to make everyting right. Time to shut it down and say, 'wait 'til next week."

Yep...I dont know how that happened... I want to see a replay of that. Its either a bad spot or bad awareness on ARE's part. Nobody was stopping him from getting the 1st. Punk Hall still should have made it.

According to preseason we should have gotten shut out and not seen the red zone at all.
Dude we just lost to the Vikings. Let me say it again....the Vikings. At home to be exact. We can't make excuses for this team. I know we are Redskin fans but lets see this for what it is. A bad loss....to a bad team. We should have won. Our defense struggled. Our offense looked weak. Special Teams were (as Carlos Mencia puts it) duh dada.
Of course it's early on the season and things can change. It can get better or worse. But according to "this" game we stunk. I don't care about the stats and blah blah blah. We lost at home to the Vikings. End of story, it's not the end of the world but tonight was sad.

What is the biggest area of concern is the CB spot. They were able to run the ball so well in the second half b/c we couldn't stop any passes. Thats what I would like to see happen. Get someone in here who can breakup a play. Also, Shawn Taylor needs to think a bit more. He should know that the refs are on a head hunt for him.
The redzone offense isn't there yet. Even though I know Portis scores if he cleanly gets that fumbled handoff and then Moss gets hit at just the right moment and drops the td.
Moss didn't get hit at "just the right moment." Brunell pretty much hung him out to dry and almost good him killed with that throw. If we had a qb with a strong arm that would've easily been a td.

IF? We have the Young stud....drumroll please.......
Mark Brunell.
I'm just glad that we don't really have a young stud that we traded away a couple of draft picks for to be able to get in the first yound. That would suck if he was just there, standing on the sidleines with a clipboard.
Defense was terrible tonight on third down. That's the best reason I can see that we lost. But what do you expect, playing Mike Rumph and Kenny Wright at corner? These guys wouldn't even make most teams.
The offense was pretty bad, too. Play calling was much better than last year, heck I couldn't even guess what we were going to run most of the time. But what's with all the short dink passes? It's pretty clear that defenses have no respect for Brunell's arm, they doing nothing but run downhill on first and second down, daring us to go long. Turns out that's pretty much a safe bet, and you can't win games playing without the threat of the deep ball. At some point, we're going to have to make a switch to Collins or Campbell if we're going to get to the next level, even if it costs us the playoffs this year.

Where did I make an excuse in that post? You said we looked like we did in preseason and we didn't. Thats a fact.

Personally, I think the ball was put where it needed to be. Moss should have caught it and if you saw him on the sideline afterwards, he seemed to indicate that to Brunell.

The play to Portis was a pitch and Brunell got hit exactly when he pitched the ball. No one hung anyone out to dry. It was just a good defensive play. Same for Moss's play.

Looking better losing is still losing. This isn't figure skating - there are no style points. I'd rather win ugly than lose pretty any day.
Oh, another thing that concerns me a little is that JG was known for half-time adjustments and I didn't really see much of an improvement in the 2nd half. With Saunders calling the shots, do we lose that?
But, to be honest, I thought that at times last year with JG calling the shots (i.e. didn't seem like we made the adjustments at half-time that he was so noted for earlier in his career).
That one long pass to Moss at the 6 was underthrown. Moss has been catching underthrown passes for going on two seasons now. We need a younger quarterback, with a stronger arm, who can hit Moss and Randle El in stride from 50 yards out. Yes, a younger QB will cost us games. But at least we'll be able tol make their defenses play us honest, and that will be a huge benefit.
And of course our kicking game looks like it's going to cost us another 3 games or so this year. Gibbs must be slipping if he doesn't see the kicking game problem.
If we play in Dallas like we played tonight, it's going to be a tough game. Maybe Saunders can use his personnel a little better next time. No excuse for such piss-poor passing stats when you have Moss, Randle El, and ey on your team. None at all.
I'm not going to bother going through the 65 pages of this thread. Suffice it to say, that the defense played very poorly tonight (they could never stop Minnesota when we had to). The o-line was porous and did not run-block well either. As had been forecast, the kicking game cost us dearly in this game. A poor effort all-around, in a game that was easily winnable.

Im pretty sure Moss was coming back for the ball. That play broke down and Brunell was scrambling and if we're talking about the same play, Brnuell zipped it in there pretty good.

I've spent half the off-season arguing that a season dependent on Brunell is going to end in disappointment, and it was time to give JC a chance with the first team, but most of the board argued Brunell gives us the best chance to win now - only now appears to be sometime later this season. Good thing we've got a first-round pick riding the pine for another year now!

I didn't see it that way. It looked to me like Brunell put everything he had into it and it died at the 6, right where Moss caught it. The safety was so surprised it was underthrown, he wasn't able to make a play on the ball. This kind of thing happened several times last year, one in the second Giants game that resulted in a long TD for us, because Moss was able to adjust quicker than the defender, and not because it was a well-thrown ball. I think Brunell himself has lost confidence in his ability to throw the long pass, which is why we see so few of them.

I would say that if I'm right, we'll see Brunell replaced within the next few weeks. If we lose ugly in Dallas, especially. If you're right, Brunell wiill play out the season, win or lose. So we'll see.

And if defenses don't respect the long ball, they'll play you close and tight and kill you all night long.
