<Aug. 21> Looking to bolster a running back corps that is short on proven playmakers, the Eagles are scheduled to meet with Davis today, according to multiple reports.
Despite scoring 12 touchdowns in 2005, Davis was released by Carolina following the season. The 32-year-old, who rushed for 549 yards on 180 carries last year, has four 1000-yard rushing seasons to his credit.

With Clinton Portis sidelined with a shoulder injury, the Redskins are also believed to be interested in the free-agent back. Davis played his first seven NFL seasons in Washington.

If the price is right this would be a great move. As a back up he would stand a better chance of stayong healthy. You can never have enough good players.

Wow I would love a reunion. That would be awesome. I'm sure he'd come as only our 3rd running back behind Betts.

And to think Steve-O ditched him for Trung Canidate. #-o

I'd heard about the Eagles rumors, and I almost vomited. However, the blurb about the Skins looking at him, that's really news to me.

However, would he be able to handle the second fiddle role on a team for which he once was THE workhorse?

He's 32 & has had numerous injuries. I don't think he wants the full worload at this point in his career.

It's not a matter of wanting it or not. He can't HANDLE a full workload at this stage in his career.

I'd be thrilled to have Stephen back. He was one of my favorite Redskins while he was here. I hope they bring him in, he'd be a great change of pace.

I was refering to his willingness to accept "2nd fiddle" status.

I would love to have this guy back as well especially if the health issue has been resolved. He was released by Carolina because of this and his injury settlement by that team would be voided if he gets himself onto another team.

It should be clarified that he is interested in coming here because his agent is trying to get him onto a team and not because of any interest the Redskins have in him playing for them. They would love having a player anywhere near this guy's abilities a few years ago but I think those days are gone and he will not be able to make our team.

I think with Betts and Davis rotating throughout a game would help Stephen's ability to play a whole game.

But only 3 yds/carry. At this point I think he;s a short yardage specialist.

I agree, but this is where we need help. Clinton Portis is not going to move many piles when the defense stacks the line. From what I saw the other night maybe Mike Sellers can fill that roll.

Megadittoes on that one - place kicker killed us last year, and if we don't improve on that, it's going to hurt us bad again.

I think the guys who make decisions about our team's running backs are more interested in what we have here now and what they perceive is the best fit for this year's team than what anyone did last year for any team. Especially a running back whose team has released him with an injury settlement this spring! I think that given what he has been to them in the last few years they know what they are doing.

I wish Davis well and hope he's playing in the NFC East because that would mean that team is in a very bad situation with regards to their running backs. We are not in that category.

Good luck to you Stephen - hope you can keep it going this year but I'll even go out on a limb (pardon the pun) and predict no TDs this year for S.D.

It looks like we aren't interested in Davis but the Eagles might be....

Exploring possible alternatives at the tailback position, the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday huddled with free agent Stephen Davis, but the 10-year veteran concluded the visit without a contract offer, and the club said nothing is imminent in terms of signing him.
In fact, coach Andy Reid suggested the visit, which included a physical examination and a workout, was a case of the Eagles simply doing their due diligence on the three-time Pro Bowl performer.

"We had planned to bring him in here during training camp and we'll make sure to evaluate him and see if he is healthy," Reid said.

"If [signing Davis] was to happen, I think it would be a bonus for us on the offensive side," quarterback Donovan McNabb told The Associated Press. "I think when it comes down to it, you talk about a guy that has been in the league for 10 years or so, he knows what to do, he knows how to win, he has been on successful teams and I think he can help us out."

The Eagles could use the help in the backfield. Starter Brian Westbrook remains sidelined after he sprained his left foot in the preseason opener and is unlikely to return until the regular season.

With Westbrook out, the Eagles have been forced to turn to Ryan Moats and Reno Mahe as their top options, with the oft-injured Correll Buckhalter also in the mix. Bruce Perry has been a big training camp disappointment and didn't even get a carry in a preseason game last Thursday at Baltimore.

Davis, 32, was released by the Carolina Panthers on March 1 in a salary cap-related move, but also because of chronic knee problems. The move saved Carolina nearly $3 million in cap funds. It is believed Monday's session with the Eagles was the first meeting Davis had with a team since his release, but there are said to be other franchises interested in bringing him in for an evaluation.

The former Auburn standout, who finished the 2005 season on injured reserve, has rushed for 7,875 yards and 65 touchdowns on 1,905 carries. He also has 167 receptions for 1,404 yards and three touchdowns.

In the prime of his career, Davis personified the workhorse tailback, averaging 300.6 rushes in a five-year span, and three times logging 300-plus attempts. Davis had four seasons of 1,000 or more yards. In 2003, his first season with the Panthers, he posted a career-best 1,444 yards in leading Carolina to a berth in Super Bowl XXXVIII.

Davis began his career as a fourth-round pick of Washington in 1996 and played with the Redskins for seven seasons before he was released for salary cap considerations. He signed with Carolina, which was a homecoming of sorts, since he is a Spartanburg, S.C., native. But his tenure with the Panthers was marked by knee problems.

In 2004, Davis underwent the controversial "microfracture" surgery, and was limited to two games. It marked just the latest in a series of treatments for knee problems. He was delayed in starting camp last summer, then appeared in 13 games with 11 starts, and carried 180 times for 549 yards and 12 touchdowns.

I'd bring him in for a tryout if it was up to me, and I'd have Westbrook around just in case Big Country gets out of hand.
No, seriously. I was as sorry as anyone to see him go...and when Carolina went to the playoffs that year, I was rooting for him to do well...but the man has too many miles on him. I like what I saw from Sellers in that role last week.

S Davis over jesse lumsden ne day of the week, but we're so deep at RB I can't see us making this move unless we give up Betts, I know, I know we all love Betts (esp. Saunders) but did you see Betts in Seattle? Tatupu sure did, when he pile drived Ladell out of the game mentally and physically

There is no way that anyone on the Redskins with any sense will trade a healthy RB for a RB with no possible way of making a contribution to this team on the field, NONE!
This is not really a serious consideration IMO - pure hype by some agent!

I predict Davis will not score a TD for any team this year and further he will not make any team's roster because of his injury!

I love the Stephen Davis we all knew but that is history now.
